Proposals to present at our December 3 conference Deadline extended to August15
SFASAs 2016 Conference Into the Future An Adult AutismDD Planning Workshop will beheld December 3 at the LKS Center at Stanford University We expect about 350 attendees andregistration will launch in September
The morning will feature a general session on lifespan planning and lunch will feature some out of thebox speakers The afternoon will feature more than a dozen discussion groups and smallpresentations We invite people from the community to apply to host the afternoon groups
Deadline August 15 2016 (extended by popular request)
Topic requirements
All topics must relate to the planning andor care for adults with autism or related developmentaldisabilities Some example topics (these are just examples)
bull Medications for the ASD adult with behaviors and anxietybull Innovative housing solutionsbull Innovative employment solutionsbull Accessing medical and dental carebull Sexuality and the spectrum

These programs are buckling under currentconditions and they are only going to get worse withthe increasing number of adults like my daughterabout to age out of the school settingCaliforniarsquos day programs for adults with autism are underfunded and overcrowded But with thousandsof young people with developmental delays or disabilities about to reach the age at which they can nolonger attend a public school the problem is soon going to get much much worse

Like so many families with children who have autism and struggle with aggressive behaviors our
experience last summer was one that no parent should ever have to face
Our son had just turned 11 He is a very complicated child both psychologically and medically He hasautism with ADHD But that is one of many acronyms that he is challenged by mood disordershynototherwise specified PTSD generalized anxiety disorder (where he has severe anxiety and OCD) andfrom birth he has had a bowel motility disorder with cecostomy (placed at age 4 12) (read moreherehttpwwwsfautismsocietyorgblogtheshyharshshyrealitiesshyofshyautismshymedicalshyneedsshyandshyashyfamilyshyinshycrisis)
