The cause seems not t o bz known. Among the valuable materials lost were the birds intended for the new Bird Hail, also a iarge col l2cfi(~n of she 1 1 s, many insect specimens, and record cards and books, The science treasures were of the nature t o which no true monetary vaiue zan be assigned, since many cannot be replaced. Jumalon t h e Master o f Science, honor is causa, p a r t l y f o r h i s work on t h e Lepidophera of Cebu and p a r t l y f o r a new type of mosaic ar t -work us ing 100% b u t t e r f l y wings, and he was engaged f u l l t ime a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y as a Research Worker i n Lepidoptera and as a F i e l d Man. Since then he has made several exped i t i ons t o Mindanao, He has a g ran t from t h e Nat ional Science Development Board t o study t h e P a ~ i l i o idaeoides of Mindanao, and has r e c e n t l y been promoted t o Associate Professor. The Society i s publishing, a s i t s Memoir No, 1 the eagerly-awaited dos Passos Check Lis t , in preparation for many years . The l i s t contains about 3600 names of genera, species, subspecies, fo rms and synonyms. The Memoir will comprise about 130 pages, including a complete index of al l name s o

This i s the f i r s t check l i s t of the Nearctic butterflies to be published since 1938, when the butterfly portion of McDunnough' s invaluable l i s t appeared, The new l i s t reflects current views on taxonomic relationships, many radically different from those held in 19 38. Hundreds of additional names a r e included. An important extension over the style of the McDunnough l i s t i s the inclusion of publication dates and of parantheses around authors' names where any species o r subspecies has been placed in a genus other than the original one.
