With little focus on the horrors of factory farming beyond a little contextualizing, FRESH offers us profiles of several of the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are re-inventing our food system. A film unearthed from the buried landscape of the American nightmare.“It is perhaps redundant to call Harmony Korine’s TRASHHUMPERS a provocation. Friday, June 25 & Saturday, June 26BLUE VELVETat 7:00 (+ Sat at 2:30)(1986) dir David Lynch w/Dennis Hopper, Kyle MacLachlan, IsabellaRossellini, Laura Dern [120 min]Amazingly, Dennis Hopper managed to create an iconic role forevery decade that he worked in. There is no doubt that his spec-tacular turn as the diabolic Frank Booth in David Lynch’s BLUEVELVET is that role for the 80s. Few actors have managed to goso far out that they wholly embody such an evil role. Booth is theantagonist to Kyle MacLachlan’s small-town amateur detectivewho gets way too much exposure to the dark side of life.

RIVER'S EDGEat 5:00, 9:30(1986) dir Tim Hunter w/Hopper, Crispin Glover, Keanu Reeves, IoneSkye, Daniel Roebuck [99 min]Samson (Roebuck) brags about strangling his girlfriend to hisgroup of vapid and naïve high school friends. The dominant per-sonality of the clique, Layne (Glover) wants to cover up the crimeout of a misguided sense of loyalty to Samson. Although some ofthe friends want to report the crime, the paralysis of teenage-hood, a lack of any role models to consult save the psychotic potdealer, Feck (Hopper), and the malaise of being too high to careresults in silence about the crime. An insightful examination ofisolation and alienation in Middle America suburbs, RIVER’SEDGE draws laughs out of the bleak landscape and empathy to-ward characters without moral compass.

Sunday, June 27GIANTat 1:30, 5:30(1956) dir George Stevens w/Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, JamesDean, Carroll Baker, Hopper [201 min]Hopper’s bit part in Rebel Without A Cause led him to anotherJames Dean film, the modern Texas epic GIANT. As scion of awealthy ranching/oil family Hopper’s Jordy is an example of anew generation of American royalty; a generation that, havingbeen raised in privilege, no longer necessarily shares the valuesof their parents. Despite his desire to be a doctor and his mar-riage to a Mexican-American wife, Jordy eventually earns the re-spect of his father (Hudson) amid the conflict between theBenedicts and their upstart neighbor, Jett Rink (Dean).

Also Sunday, June 27The Late Show!TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2at 9:30(1986) dir Tobe Hooper w/Hopper, Caroline Williams, Jim Siedow, BillMoseley [89 min]Thirteen years after Sally’s escape from the cannibal family in thefirst Chainsaw Massacre no evidence of what she reported hasever been found and she has been consigned to an asylum. But,when two teens are prank calling a radio station and get carvedup by Leatherface while on the line, the radio DJ (Williams), acrazed cop (Hopper), various victims, and a zany family of can-nibals hop on the merry-go-round of gore and insanity — Ridealong with us, won’t y’all?

Monday, June 28TRUE ROMANCEat 4:30, 7:00, 9:30(1993) dir Tony Scott w/Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hop-per, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman [120 min]Scripted by Quentin Tarantino a year before Pulp Fiction, thisdarkly romantic action-comedy features Slater as Clarence whomeets the beautiful Alabama (Arquette), apparently his perfectwoman, on his birthday at a Sonny Chiba triple-feature. It turnsout that Alabama is actually a prostitute paid for his boss, butthey can’t deny their mutual attraction and they plan to settledown. When Clarence goes to break the news to her pimp (Old-man), however, he ends up shooting up the place and mis-tankenly grabs millions in cocaine instead of Alabama’s suitcase.Soon, the couple is on the run with the mob and the cops hot ontheir trail. In a movie full of memorable lines, the exchange be-tween Clarence’s security guard dad (Hopper) and a ruthlessmob enforcer (Walken) is an indellible standout.

Tuesday, June 29HOOSIERSat 7:00(1986) dir David Anspaugh w/Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Den-nis Hopper, Sheb Wooley [114 min]Two unlikely heroes, a former basketball star with a sketchy past(Hackman) and the town drunk (Hopper), combine forces to leadthe local, faltering, basketball team to victory. Faced with a myr-iad of obstacles, the two dubious coaches manage to make some-thing of the undisciplined and apathetic players, despite all theodds (see: vodka). Based on a true story, HOOSIERS is a nowclassic tale of redemption and hard-won success.

RUMBLE FISHat 5:00, 9:30(1983) dir Francis Ford Coppola w/Matt Dillon, Mickey Rourke, DianeLane, Dennis Hopper, Nicolas Cage [94 min]In Coppola’s version of S.E. Hinton’s novel, Hopper gives a rareunderstated performance as the philosophically alcoholic fatherof Rusty (Dillon) and his older brother, ‘Motorcycle Boy’ (Rourke).Rusty thinks his sibling is the coolest but he is eventually exposedto the hopelessness and alienation of the gang leader. Gor-geously shot, dreamily constructed, and impeccably acted by asuperb cast, RUMBLE FISH is a remarkable literary adaptation.

Wednesday, June 30 & Thursday, July 1Restored 35mm PrintNIGHT TIDEat 7:30(1961) dir Curtis Harrington w/Dennis Hopper, Linda Lawson, DavidMuir, Luana Anders [84 min]Combine Splash, The Odyssey, and Cat People and you mightapproximate the strange beauty of NIGHT TIDE. One of Hop-per’s first starring roles finds him enamored with a raven-hairedbeauty who plays a mermaid in the local carnival. Strange thingsstart happening and Hopper’s character begins to suspect thathis girlfriend may be slightly more than she seems. Campy, butalso strangely sexy with moments of great depth and literarymerit, NIGHT TIDE is one to be watched again and again.

Wednesday, June 30 Co-FeatureTRACKSat 5:30, 9:30(1977) dir Henry Jaglom w/Dennis Hopper, Taryn Power, Dean Stock-well [92 min]It is somehow not surprising that the iconoclastic director HenryJaglom made one of his most intriguing films with Hopper as thestar. TRACKS is a fascinating collision of an old-fashioned rail-road thriller and a counter-culture psych-out. Hopper is a PTSD-damaged Vietnam vet back in the U.S. on a “very importantmission” aboard a transcontinental train whose combat flash-backs disrupt his chance at redemption and romance with an in-nocent college student.

Thursday, July 1 Co-FeatureWITCH HUNTat 5:30, 9:30(1994) dir Paul Schrader w/Dennis Hopper, Penelope Ann Miller, EricBogosian, Sheryl Lee Ralph [100 min]In the mid-90s, HBO produced two bizarre neo-noirs written byJoseph Dougherty that helped set the tone today’s popular, off-beat cable series. Both films feature mid-century private detectiveH. Phillip Lovecraft (played by Hopper in WITCH HUNT) wholives in an alternate reality where magic is a part of everyone’sdaily life – except his. Lovecraft refuses to use magic “for personalreasons” yet still finds himself at the middle of a magical murdercase and political scandal. The inspired combination of hard-boiled P.I. pulp and gothic horror make for a memorable, eccen-tric film. Not available on DVD!

Friday, July 2THE TRIPat 7:30(1967) dir Roger Coman w/Peter Fonda, Susan Strasberg, Bruce Dern,Dennis Hopper [85 min]THE TRIP is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a freaky, psy-chedelic 60’s acid movie, that always kinda leaves you wonder-ing if you’re either missing something important, orunderstanding far too much. The plot is simple: Peter Fonda’swife leaves him and in his despair he enlists a friend to help himfind “better living through chemistry.” The two show up at theirfriend Max’s (Hopper) house and soon are experiencing, waitfor it… the trip. Fonda goes through both typical 60’s psychedelicimagery, and also whacked out medieval images of torture andwitches before he emerges from his “enlightened state” with whathe was searching for in the first place. Not to be forgotten: THETRIP was written by Jack Nicholson, the father of the (arguably)best and most bizarre that the 60’s had to offer.

THE GLORY STOMPERSat 5:30, 9:30(1968) dir Anthony M. Lanza w/Dennis Hopper, Jody McCrea, JockMahoney, Chris Noel [85 min]Dennis Hopper looks so right on a motorcycle – it’s like SeanConnery in a kilt or Bret Michaels with a bandana. In this, theless famous of Hopper’s bike movies, he is Chino, a volatile mem-ber of The Black Souls who finds himself in trouble with a rivalgang after beating up one of its members and assaulting his girl-friend. Falsely assuming that his victim was dead, Chino rideson, only to regret this decision later. Not available on DVD!

Saturday, July 3 & Sunday, July 4EASY RIDERSat at 3:30, 7:30 Sun at 3:00, 7:00(1969) dir Dennis Hopper w/Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nichol-son [95 min]Indisputably one of Hopper’s greatest achievements as a film-maker, actor and cultural icon, EASY RIDER follows the cross-Country road trip of two shaggy hippies (Fonda and Hopper)and their free-spirited lawyer companion (Nicholson). Conceivedand executed as something of an contemporary, inversed versionof the ‘50s westerns that Hopper began in, EASY RIDER postu-lates that the white-hatted cowboys might just have been hickswith guns and the outlaws they pursued could easily have beenmisunderstood free-spirits. On the other hand it also neatly en-capsulates the failure of the ‘60s hippies to fully shed the materi-alistic grasp of sex, drugs, and money. Plus “Born To Be Wild,”The Byrds, Hendris, and the real-life Phil Spector!

“Filled with beautifully controlled little surprises that are usuallyon the anxious edge of going out of control. The impact is terri-fying, its effect on audiences seems to be catatonic catharsis. Mostpeople come out saying ‘I’ve got to see that again.’” – The VillageVoice (1969)

THE AMERICAN DREAMERSat at 5:30 Sun at 5:00(1971) dir L.M. Kit Carson, Lawrence Schiller w/Hopper [90 min]After the wild, and surprise, success of EASY RIDER, Hopper wasgiven carte-blanche to make his follow-up – resulting in one ofthe most hideously, ill-informed mistakes ever made by a Holly-wood studio (see also WATERWORLD). Expecting anothercounter-culture blockbuster, both Hopper’s backers and fans weretaken aback by The Last Movie: a self-referential, obtuse, art filmmade in a vacuum by the director and a crew of sycophantic en-ablers fueled by drugs, sex and paranoia. THE AMERICANDREAMER is the story of the making of the film – and one of thebest films about filmmaking ever made.

Also Saturday, July 3The Late Show!SUPER MARIO BROTHERS *at 9:30(1993) dir Annabel Jankel, Rocky Morton w/Bob Hoskins, JohnLeguizamo, Dennis Hopper, Samantha Mathis [104 min]We weren’t originally planning on included this – it is, after all atruly ridiculous movie and was universally derided upon its re-lease – but you demanded it, so here it is! Actually, we think thatthose who believe this movie is a piece of crap just plain haven’tseen it because it’s a bizarrely cartoon-colored confection.Widely reported to be a disaster from start to finish, SUPERMARIO BROTHERS suffers from a form of split personality ex-tremely common in Hollywood that is created when a studio hiresa creative team with distinctive vision (in this case two of thewarped minds behind Max Headroom) and then tries to imposeextreme limitations on them. The result, more often than not, is aconfusing jumble of weird ideas, bad performances and terribleediting. This is certainly true for SUPER MARIO BROTHERS but, somehow, impossibly, it works – particularly due to the scenery-chewing talents of Hoskins, Leguizamo, and, especially, Hopperas King Koopa. * Please call To Confirm

Tuesday, July 6MAD DOG MORGAN *at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30(1976) dir Philippe Mora w/Dennis Hopper, Jack Thompson, DavidGulpilil [102 min]In this Australian western, Hopper gives another spectacularlyunhinged performance – one that stands out even in a careerpractically built on them. Hopper plays the legendary Outbackoutlaw – or bushranger – Dan Morgan. Inspired by a real histor-ical figure, Hopper’s Morgan is drawn Down Under by a goldrush but finds only desperation, injustice, and abuse. Vowing re-venge on a society that cast him out, Morgan takes to the bushand, with the help of an aborigine compadre (the great DavidGulpilil), wages a guerilla campaign against Australia’s elite. * Please Call To Confirm

Wednesday, July 7 & Thursday, July 8SPEEDWed at at 7:00 Thu at 4:45, 9:45(1994) dir Jan de Bont w/Keanu Reeves, Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bul-lock, Jeff Daniels [116 min]Even if you haven’t seen SPEED, you’ve seen SPEED. This is oneof those movies that has ingrained itself into our consciousnessso securely that since it’s release it has turned into a pop-culturephenomenon, spawning numerous parodies, Keanu Reeves’ sec-ond wind, and, sadly, an ill-planned sequel. The plot is pretty sim-ple: a mad man rigs a bus with explosives so that if it slows below50 mph it will explode. A young, hunky cop (Reeves) and a nu-bile young woman (Bullock) have to save the day and fall in loveat the same time. Dennis Hopper is FANTASTIC as the explosion-crazy bad guy here, and his death scene (spoiler, sorry) is oneof the best ever put to film.

WATERWORLDWed at 4:15, 9:15 Thu at 7:00(1995) dir Kevin Reynolds w/Kevin Costner, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Hop-per, Tom Waits [135 min]WATERWORLD is about a ragtag society living on the openocean after the polar ice caps have melted, covering all dry landin a blanket of water. And, of course, it’s about Kevin Costner, being… well, Kevin Costner. Eerily relevant and also amusinglyridiculous, it has become a sort of cult classic, renowned for itsfollies as much as its successes. WATERWORLD has gained astrange bit of redemption recently, as a real life machine for ex-tracting oil from water that Costner backed during research forthe film has been considered as a possibility for cleaning up BPsdisastrous oil spill in the Gulf.

Friday, June 25 – Thursday, July 8, 2010AMERICAN DREAMER: A TRIBUTE TO DENNIS HOPPERIt’s very easy to think of Dennis Hopper as an actor of limited range, especially since his most over-the-top performances are someof his best known. But one of the things that made him such a potent pop culture icon is that he, amazingly, managed to create anindelible performance for every decade that he worked in. In the ‘50s a brief appearance in Rebel Without A Cause lead to amore substantial part in GIANT and work with John Wayne. In the ‘60s there was, of course, EASY RIDER and in the 70s roles asa grizzled troublemaker in Apocalypse Now and The American Friend. In the 80s Hopper was embraced as a freaky elder states-man particularly in BLUE VELVET and his Oscar nominated role in HOOSIERS. In the 90s he re-established his range with roles asunhinged villains (SPEED, WATERWORLD) and understated character turns (especially in Basquiat which we’re disappointed wecan’t screen). Finally, in the 2000s, Hopper truly embraced his icon status – taking on roles on TV (24, Crash), in commercials, and, of course on film, filing perhaps his best performance in years as friend to Ben Kingsley in Elegy. In his real world ‘roles’ aswell, Hopper showed remarkable range and diversity – art collector, addict, photographer, both Democrat and Republican, rab-ble-rouser, paranoid, pseudo-shaman, and real-life anti-hero – Hopper was all of these and more. He will most certainly be missedbut his cinematic legacy leaves a rich group of films to re-discover.
