Many new records and much progress were celebrated at the FifthSICOT/SIROT Annual International Conference held in Marrakech. Themeeting was a success from many points of view. Thanks to the sustaining

effort of the Conference President, Thami Benzakour, with the support of all his family, Kheira, his wife, Nadia, his daughter, and Ahmed, his son, the conference wasan “unforgettable” event.

The scientific programme ultimately included 344 oral presentations and 353 posters.Four plenary speakers and 61 invited speakers gave talks on the state of the art in theirvaried disciplines. No less than 1,299 participants who came from 79 different coun-tries attended the meeting. Europe provided the largest attendance, 55%, followedin decreasing order by Africa, Near and Middle East 26%; Asia and Pacific 15%; NorthAmerica and Latin America 4%. 211 trainees attended the meeting.

15 applicants took the fifth SICOT Diploma Examination. Out of these, 12 passedthe certificate which is gaining more and more international recognition. The twosuccessful candidates with the highest marks received the German SICOT Fellowship.A total of 30 awards and diplomas were given out at the Closing Ceremony.

This year, we shared sessions with SMACOT (Société Marocaine de ChirurgieOrthopédique et de Traumatologie), SRS (Scoliosis Research Society), and IFPOS(International Federation of Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery).

Among the very good news related to the Society is the progress of our scientific jour-nal “International Orthopaedics”. It reached very recently an impact factor of 0.997.In addition, the very short delay between submission and publication (less than 6 months) and the quality of English language correction represent now a very at-tractive scientific medium for your papers.

Please take time to visit our website which has also evolved significantly and offers youthe opportunity to discuss online abstracts of the best papers presented at theMarrakech meeting. Another new service it offers is available positions for traineesin the main training centres of the world. It also opens the possibility for trainees torequest a training position in general or specialised orthopaedic surgery and trau-matology.

The rising star of SICOT in the Arabian nights at Marrakech will remain a memo-rable vision of the SICOT evolution and of its continued efforts to be present in allparts of the world. ■

One part of the educational mis-sion of SICOT is to assess levels

of orthopaedic knowledge and com-petence. At each meeting, Annual orTriennial, since 2002, I have been re-sponsible for organising and runningan examination for the SICOT diploma.

The written part of the examination consists of 100multiple-choice questions selected by Charles Sorbiefrom the HYPERGUIDE - a web based educational fo-rum sponsored by STRYKER. The oral part is an inten-sive session of questions on orthopaedics, pathology, trauma, children, hands and basic science. The candi-date visits four tables at each of which two examiners“grill” him for 30 minutes on one or two of the desig-nated subjects. At the end of two hours oral and twohours written examination it is possible to form a fair-ly clear idea of the candidates’ knowledge!

This year in Marrakech, there were 12 successful can-didates, three of whom scored outstanding marks:Athanasios ANASTASIADIS (Greece)Ranjith Ravindran KUZHUPILLY (UK)Ravi G. BHARADWAJ (UK)Two of these three will be offered the German SICOTFellowship which enables them to visit importantGerman Orthopaedic centres over a four-week peri-od and includes travel and living expenses. You willhave read, in earlier editions of the Newsletter, whatan outstanding opportunity and experience theFellowship represents and we wish the two lucky high-est scoring young surgeons every success on their trip.SICOT is indebted to Prof Dr J. Eulert for this splendidopportunity provided by his colleagues in the DeutscheSektion SICOT e V.

The other successful candidates were:Mousa ALHAOSAWI (Saudi Arabia)Swapnil Amit SINGH (UK)Ibrahima FARIKOU (Cameroon)

Avadhoot KANTAK (UK)Peter Kavoo KILONZO (Egypt)Deepu BHASKAR (UK)Elhussein ELMOATASEM (Egypt)Kirsteen AWORI (Kenya)Ihab EMRAN (Egypt)We congratulate these candidates on their success andwish them well in their future careers.

At each examination there have been more applica-tions and this year, in Marrakech, there were over 24potential candidates. For logistical reasons it was onlypossible to accept 24 candidates because we need thesame number of examiners as candidates and it can bedifficult to assemble 24 busy orthopaedic professors inone place at the same time! It is therefore particular-ly disappointing when candidates fail to turn up for theexaminations since all the facilities, computers, exami-nation rooms, papers and most of all, examiners havebeen set in place in readiness. We will contact all thecandidates who did not show up to find out how wecan help them to ensure their attendance in future.

I would also like to express my gratitude and appre-ciation to the international team of examiners who ded-icate so much time and effort to ensure the continuingsuccess of this venture. They are in no particular order:Jochen Eulert and Jochen Loehr (Germany), BrettCourtenay (Australia), Tomas Trc (Czech Republic),Marko Pecina (Croatia), Erdal Cila (Turkey), AbdullahAl-Othman (Saudi Arabia), Charles Sorbie, MorrisDuhaime and James Waddell (Canada), Luis Lopez-Duran Stern (Spain), Kandiah Raveendran(Malaysia), Syed M. Awais (Pakistan), Tim Morley,Ian Leslie, Marc Patterson, Geoffrey Walker, andMaher Halawa (UK), Rocco Pitto (New Zealand),and Galal Zaki Said (Egypt).

The Officers of SICOT are keen to develop and im-prove the SICOT Examination and are committed toits continuing success. ■

SIROT

SICOT has started its training cen-tre in Pakistan. SIROT is aware

of the rising need for young or-thopaedic surgeons to get involved inresearch. Indeed, in some developingregions, trainees are required tocomplete one or two small scale

research projects before their final qualifying exam-ination. SIROT started short training workshopsfor trainees in 2006. The first was held in Beijing,China, in November 2006, during the An nualCongress of the Chinese Orthopaedic Society. The next was held in Makassar, Indonesia. The work-shops provided practical training on researchmethodology, biostatistics, giving presentations, andwriting manuscripts etc., for 50-200 trainees eachtime.

Romania is holding a joint workshop with SIROTin October 2007, and we have Georgia and Hungarylined up for the planning in 2008.

SIROT is ready to offer developing regions a sim-ilar arrangement. ■

In memory ofProf Dr Ion Dinulescu

Worldwidenews

P rof Dr Ion Dinulescu was born on 4 May 1929 inBucharest. At the age of two, he left for Paris, along

with his parents, and there he spent his childhood.Returning to Romania in the interwar period, he at-tended courses at some impressive schools in Bucharest. In 1953 he graduated from the Human Medicine Faculty, one of the 10 best students. Having decided to followthe path of healing human suffering, Prof Dr Ion Dinulescubecame actively engaged in several medical servicesaround the country. He was particularly interested inosteoarticular tuberculosis surgery. He had contact, forthe first time, with orthopaedic-traumatology surgery, and from then on he dedicated his en-tire medical career to this specialty. Hisprofessional development had no limits.Prof Dr Dinulescu tried to acquire thebest from every learning opportunity toperfect himself in his chosen specialty. He attended numerous courses bothin Romania and abroad. In 1970, he re-ceived an invitation from theCommittee of the Italian Society ofOrthopaedics and Traumatology towork in several well-known Italian clin-ics such as: the Rizzoli OrthopaedicsInstitute in Bologna with Prof Dr M.Palttinieri, the University Clinic ofOrtho paedics in Rome with Prof DrG. Monticelli, and the International College of Surgeonsalso in Rome. He spent time at the Clinic ofOrthopaedics and Traumatology in the cantonal hospi-tal in Geneva, Switzerland.

As a result of the rules imposed by the communistparty, Prof Dr Dinulescu was unable to continue hisprofessional development in other ways, but corre-sponded regularly with his friends and fellow orthopaedicsurgeons in other countries. His inexhaustible energywas reoriented at home to both university and post-

university didactic activities, guiding thousands of med-ical students and hundreds of young specialists in theirmedical development.

The communist regime could not oppose the ac-knowledgement of his achievements and, therefore, since1968, he was able to become a member of several soci-eties all over the world - the Austrian Society ofTraumatology (1968), SIOT (1970), SICOT (1972). Hewas appointed SICOT National Delegate of Romaniabetween 1992 and 2006. After the anti-communist rev-olution, he was elected an active member of AOLF(1992), SOFCOT (1992), EFORT (1992, National

Delegate 1992-1996), and, in 2002,President of the 8th AOLF CongressBucharest, Romania.

A guerdon or mark of his medicaland scientific orthopaedic achieve-ments and, at the same time, interna-tional acknowledgement was his elec-tion as a Membre d’Honneurof SOFCOT(Paris 2004).

The national development of or-thopaedics and traumatology wasclosely linked with Prof Dr IonDinulescu, proof of which is the nu-merous surgical ‘firsts’ he performed. He was a member of SOROT and USSMfrom 1953, having been elected as

General Secretary (1970-1990) and then President ofSOROT (1992-1995). In 1991 he was elected a mem-ber of the Romanian Medical Academy of Science.

Prof Dr Ion Dinulescu sustained important scientificactivity, being author of more than 400 studies and sci-entific communications, published in both national and in-ternational scientific journals. This has given him his welldeserved position of prestige among the prominent fig-ures of international Orthopaedics.
