AAVA WET LABSSmall Animal: Tui Na in Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

(Debbie Hadlock, VMD)This laboratory will provide a complementary 2 hour hands-on workshop to the Tui-na lecture previously presented. During Tui-na practicethe most common tools are the hands (hand manipulation). Other body parts may be used. Techniques will be demonstrated, thenpracticed and applied by each student. Skillful manipulation emphasizing quantity and quality will be stressed. Acupuncture points, especially selected for the performance patient, will be reviewed including Ashi points as well as contrary- Ashi points as well as Jing-jin(the musculotendinous system along the 12 meridians). Discussion will evolve around application for both prevention and treatment for thesport / performance animal.

Tui-na manipulation stimulates acupoints and channels which promotes Qi and Blood circulation, removes Qi blockage and Blood stasis. Itis also beneficial for restoring injured soft tissues. In the performance animal, our goal should be to achieve a smooth flow of Qi which willimprove performance and eliminate pain.

Small Animal: Identifying and Developing TCVM-based Treatment Plans for Injuries in the Canine Athlete(Kim Henneman, DVM)

This 2 hour lab will review common injuries in the active canine athlete (including companion weekend warriors) and how to identify themwith integration of both conventional Western and TCVM physical exam techniques and diagnostic imaging. Treatment discussion willinclude the use of various acupuncture/pressure techniques whether as stand-alone therapies or integrated into a larger, multi-teamrehabilitation approach, as well as the use of food therapy and herbal formulas

Large Animal: Skills to Diagnose and Treat Upper Body Lameness “Interactive”(Deborah Marshall, DVM)

This will be an interactive lab using 6-10 horses. Dr. Marshall will first demonstrate how to use the palpation and visual skills necessary tounderstand and diagnose problems in the Upper Body of the equine. Each student will then be given hands on training with the horses toaid in their understanding of the different textures and feel of the musculature including development, balance and injury. All of this willbe done before we use traditional acupuncture diagnostics and before we use the horse move in order to encourage the students to learnto read the history of the horse through their fingers.

Students will then be asked to add their own skills, traditional acupuncture diagnostics, TOM pulsing, Are Thorenson pulsing, ECIWO,intuition, experience, horsemanship, whatever talents and ideas the students have to add to the information we have received from ourfingers. We will then add the notes and comments of the owners, riders and trainers and see the horse in motion to gain a newer andmore complete picture of the horse’s story.
