Organic Stabilisers – the Key to Building a Sustainable Future

> > more than additives

Sustainability assessment of stabiliser systems

Organic stabilisers allow the review of all additives consistent with attaining long-term sustainability.OBS allows producers the scope to phase out long-term substances that can accumulate in nature and where there is reasonable doubt regarding toxic effects of additives. The methodology can be based on a robust set of principles known as The Natural Step (TNS).The use of OBS stabilisers considerably enhances the overall sustainability of the PVC matrix, when PVC is measured against alternative building materials.

The Ultimate Goal – a long term visionary perspective

Ideal proposal of developing a perfect PVC polymer chain to increase the intrinsic heat stability of PVC.The above achievement would make the need of a heat stabiliser superfluous, only rheology and processing additives would be required. In the meantime, a fully sustainable Organic heat stabiliser system is evolving bridging the above technology gap, reducing embodied energy inputs.OBS contains no heavy metals by definition.OBS has the potential to fulfill most of the system conditions for short, medium and longterm goals.OBS has the best potential not to migrate into the environment longer-term.

OBS Constituents used to improve overall sustainability

The Organic back-bone Uracil derivative (DMAU) was initially derived as a by-product of caffein separation from coffee beans.Co-stabilisers such as zeolites are used to enhance the properties of the Organic stabiliser systems.Currently, the world’s annual production of natural zeolite is about 4 million tons. Of this quantity, 2.6 million tons are shipped to Chinese markets to be used in the concrete industry. Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Australia, and Asia are world leaders in supplying the world’s demand for natural zeolite. The Calcium Stearate component used in OBS is based on palm-oil derived stearic acid, a renewable resource also used for bio-diesel production and palm cooking oil. Some of the traditional paraffin waxes used in stabilisers can be replaced with natural bees-wax.The absence of metals such as Lead, Tin and Zinc further reduces the burden on non-renewable resources, less mining.

OBS Constituents – cont’d.

No synthetic anti-oxidants used (Bis-phenol A), etc.All additives either NSF, FDA (USA), and EU positive listed for potable water contact applications. Some of the esterwaxes produced from the palm stearine bases are used in cosmetic applications and have replaced straight petroleum hydrocarbon external lubricants required for processing. The manufacturing process for the OBS stabiliser composite is a “cold” process requiring no melting nor insitu-reaction of the raw materials, unlike traditional Lead-based and Tin-based stabilisers.OBS stabilisers are described as totally non-toxic and non-hazardous according to Worksafe criteria

Both CaZn and OBS are seen as proper lead alternatives.

Whereas OBS due to its most favourable toxicological dataand the absence of any heavy metal outweighs CaZn.
