P R I E S T F I E L D S CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

I would like to warmly welcome Horsham to Medway today and it marks the start of another busy weekend of rugby.

With England playing and hopefully winning this morning, the rugby will continue in the afternoon with our 2’s playing Tonbridge Juddians 2 and our development squad playing against Aylesford 2’s, along with the mighty Crusaders playing away at Edenbridge.

On Sunday our mini’s finally get the opportunity to play in the Medway Mini’s Festival, where we have teams from across the county coming along to play. As always we are always looking for volunteers and any help would be appreciated, please just turn up on the day and we will always find something for you to do.

Both our ladies teams are away at Lewis and Pullborough and our entire girls section are on their way to Worthing RFC for some friendly matches and a sing off in the club house afterwards! Our youth teams are playing Maidstone and Ashford. So, as always I wish everyone the best of luck and let’s hope the weather remains dry.

Roaring Medway up the hill!

CLUB NEWS Taff Gwilliam

The 1st XV squad have been hit with more injury issues. There are an unprecedented high number of players currently injured. Richard Petch has had a scan on his back injury and we await the results. Dan Huntley’s scan showed a torn cruciate ligament and will be out until after Christmas. Lewis Stimpson has had successful surgery on his torn pectoral muscle last week but is unlikely to feature for the club again this season. Charlie Wardzynski’s dislocated elbow is responding well and he hopes to return to training in a month. Joe Fernyhough is still out with his knee injury and is yet to return to training. Tom Whitnell is awaiting his scan and it is thought he will almost certainly need surgery. James Dance has recovered from the knock he received on Saturday at Belsize Park however Zach Garratt will be out for 4 weeks after his hamstring injury in the same game.

The final England World Cup Pool game versus France will be shown live in the clubhouse next Saturday. Doors open at 9am. Refreshments are available.

Tomorrow the club hosts a Kent Mini Festival of Rugby so if you are free please come and help or simply just come and watch the club’s future players compete.

Next Saturday the 1st XV travel away to Havant in a London Division 1 South league match. There will be coach leaving the club at 10-30. Please book your place with either Peter Rann or Taff Gwilliam.

MATCH REPORTOn Saturday Medway travelled to Regents Park in North London to take on a team they had never played before in Belsize Park. Both sides entered this match with two wins from their three opening encounters.

The host side started much the stronger and Medway were immediately on the back foot. Belsize Park camped themselves in Medway half and pressed their line. A kick behind from the host side saw Sam Garofalo scrambling to clear his line and in doing so prevented a possible score by playing the ball on the ground. The referee awarded a penalty and sent Garofalo to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Medway held out for those 10 minutes and were returned to full strength but not for long!

A catch and drive by the hosts just two minutes later was brought down short of the line and the referee adjudged it done illegally and awarded a penalty try and in doing so reduced Medway to 14 men again with Billy Humphrey sent to the sin bin.

Despite down to 14 men for the second time Medway showed character and dug in. That tenacity was rewarded when excellent line out ball saw Alfie Orris slice open the home defence and score the first of three tries on the day. Harvey converted to level the scores at 7-7.

On 29 minutes Medway introduced young debutant Jack Nicholls to the fray with veteran Ross Cooley being forced off with a back strain. Nicholls exceeded all expectations of such a young player with a very, very solid performance in the remainder of the game.

On 32 minutes Medway took a lead that they would not relinquish. Orris was again on hand to score following excellent scrummaging from the forwards and good distribution from Dan Harvey. Harvey added the extras. 7-14.

With virtually the last play of the half Medway had gone through a number of phases Antony Clement and Luke Burns prominent and broken down the home side’s defence. Harvey took full advantage when he threw a dummy stepped inside and beat two further cover defenders to stretch out and score. He converted his own try and Medway went into half time leading 7-21. Whilst the scoreline may have looked comprehensive Belsize Park always looked dangerous and had created, but spurned, some good scoring opportunities.

The second half started and Medway were dominating the forward exchanges providing a platform for the backs to take advantage of. And so Orris did with his

hat trick try. Billy Sandison and Max Easton combined to provide quality ball and Orris finished it off following good work from James Dance and Harvey. Harvey was good with the conversion. 7-28.

Medway failed to secure the re-start and after a series of phases from Belsize they created an overlap and scored an excellent and deserved try out wide. The conversion was missed. 12-28.

Both sides knew the next score was vital to settle the outcome of the game. Medway looked to go through phases and control the ball, Mo Pangarker and Captain Tom Beaumont were outstanding in their carries and were ably supported by Malcolm Cameron and Antony Clement.

The front row of Billy Sandison, Jack Nicholls and Alex O’ Leary were dominating the set piece and the phases play on the back of the set piece created an opportunity for James Dance and Zach Garratt to combine. Garratt raced away to round the fullback and score a well worked open play try. Harvey converted. 12-35.

Dance and Billy Humphrey were then both forced to leave the field with injury. They were replaced by Conor Chalmers who looked sharp and was a constant threat and Adam Dady who worked hard.

At 35-12 you could be forgiven for thinking the game was over but the home side always looked dangerous and they never gave up taking the game to the visitors at every opportunity and they justly were rewarded for their endeavours with a well taken converted try on the hour mark to make the score 19-35.

Dan Harvey added a penalty on 65 minutes when the home side were penalised for not releasing in the tackle. 19-38.

Despite this setback the home side continued to play and scored their bonus point try on 72 minutes. The conversion was missed. 24-38. The game was closed out when Harvey punished another home side misdemeanour at the final breakdown of the game with a penalty kick that sailed over to make the final score 24-41.

Coach Taff Gwilliam said ‘We are delighted to bounce back with a win on the road after last weeks’ home defeat. Belsize Park are a good side and will win a lot of games in this league’. He added ‘Despite our injuries the youngsters we are blooding are stepping up and doing a fine job.’

THE STORY OF THE CLUB THROUGH THE DECADES

September 1939 – World War 2

October 1949 – During September, an application had been received by the Council, from Rochester City RFC for permission to use land at Knights Road in Strood, formerly used by Shorts RFC, for their new home pitch. This was agreed with a nominal charge of £1/0/0 per annum.

Rochester RFC played for the first time on their new home pitch in Strood and celebrated with a very narrow 5-3 win over Sheppey. Winger Dave Evans got the all-important try which Joe Hilderbrands converted. They also managed to field three teams for the first time since 1938 and had a membership of over 80. Rochester City RFC 1st XV 1949-50 Standing: WD Lintern (Chairman), F Cousins, D Evans, K Phillips, G Reynolds, C Renriques, R Molyneaux. Sitting: B Hodgson, J Lindsay, D Gautry, J Hilderbrands (Capt), J Kingdom, N Parkes, D Pring. In front: I Wilkie, W Elvy.

The following notes appeared in Medway’s 1977 tour programme to the Lake District. They were written by Dave ‘Chippy’ Woods giving a brief insight into those times. “This tour has its beginning in the days when a young naval rating used to join such stalwarts as ‘Pop’ Lintern, Jack Lindsay, Dick and Ron Chaston, a young medic called Norman Parks and an even younger lad, Fred Dellow in rushing around a meadow in Strood with buckets of white-wash, in order to get a pitch marked out before the game. Also in those halcyon days, the club had but two teams, a home team and an away team, selection being dependant on marital commitments, also a club song about babies falling down plug-holes”

October 1959 – A better afternoon for Rochester as all three sides won, the 1st XV leading the way with an 11-3 victory over Old Juddians. Rick Tomlin touched down through a wedge of players for the opening try which was concerted by Tony Shepherd. The next score was a superb solo effort from Shepherd as he danced down the touch-line

before diving over in the corner. Keith Taylor got the final try when, a move which stated on the half-way, saw the ball pass through several pairs of hands before the big forward crashed over

October 1969 – Rochester played their first and possibly last match against the Welsh Regiment as they lost 22-3 to the Army cup champions at Lydd. Peter Young went over for the sole Rochester points. The referee sent a home player off and later threatened to abandon the game. “They were based on the Romney Marches and their rugby reflected the scenery – wild and barren”.

October 1979 - Brian Jack was sensationally sent off for retaliation as the 1st XV drew 6-6 away in the first-ever clash against Bec Old Boys. The players were further puzzled

when the referee gave the player the choice of going off the pitch or staying on! Taff Gwilliam grabbed a try before half-time which Brian Waite converted. Brian received a four-match ban for his troubles!!

(Right) Doug Bearman takes the opportunity to remind Brian Jack (left) about that sending-off!!!

October 1989 – Medway were without Mick Cadmore who was away in Paris

playing for the English Prison Services Xv against their French counterparts as they took on local rivals Gillingham Anchorians. They achieved a 18-9 victory but it took time to assume control. Dave Davies scored two tries, the first when after a superb break, he dummied the cover to score under the posts. John Rogers added another before his brother Andy went over an opportunist try at the blind-side of a scrum. Gordon Connell added one conversion.

October 1999 - A long overdue win in the League was achieved in a 30-8 win over Horsham. There were tries from Neil Stephenson, Colin Germany, Lee Fiddyment, Simon Shaw and Danny Chitty.

October 2009 – Medway took on unbeaten leaders Folkestone in this London SE 3 league match at Priestfields A strong performance by the home side and tries from Luke Burns and Simon Green along with two conversions and two penalties from Glen Wadsworth saw them comfortably home.
