This Week:

Prayer 101: When You Pray...

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Prayer 101!

When you Pray…Ask and You Will Receive

In the First Reading this weekend, God through speaks to

Abraham through prayer about the gravity of sin in the

cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. God tells Abraham that

the sin from these two cities cry to Him in Heaven because

they are so serious. God is operating out of care and concern

for their souls and He still does this for us today.

Abraham continues to ask God questions throughout their

dialogue and God assures him that the whole community

would be spared because of the presence of even a few

innocents among the guilty. Do you spend time in prayer

with God and ask Him questions? Jesus says in the Gospel,

“For everyone who asks, receives.” What have you asked

for and received from God? Contemplate your prayer life,

do you see where God is working in your life?

When you Pray…Seek and You Will Find

Are we constantly seeking Christ in order that we may be

open to find what He is calling us to? We hear in the

Gospel, one of the disciples asking Jesus to teach them

how to pray. Jesus gives the disciples the Lord’s Prayer.

The shorter version of the Lord’s prayer, displayed in

the Gospel points to a certain urgency in growing in

communion with God the Father. Like the Lord’s

Prayer we are familiar with, the version found in St. Luke

has three essential elements: (1) God-centered; (2) Self-

centered; (3) Other-centered.

The first part of Luke’s prayer, focused on God, reads:

“Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.”

The second part of the prayer found in Luke’s Gospel,

focused on ourselves reads:

prayer for some grace or another, He knows how

seriously we desire that from Him and, like a loving

Father cannot refuse us that grace. Do you persistently

present God with your prayers? How do you order your

day?

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Pray as we Learn,

Love, & Live Christ’s Mission!

Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Pray for us

“Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our

sins…” The final part of Luke’s prayer is focused on

others: “...for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us,

and do not subject us to the final test.”

When you Pray…Knock and the Door Will Be Opened

In the second part of the Gospel, Jesus tells us about the

necessity of our persistence in prayer. It is not

uncommon for people to call out to God in prayer for some

particular grace in order to deal with some situation, and

then for one to become upset because the prayer wasn’t

immediately answered or that it wasn’t answered within the

timeframe that we had desired from God or because it

wasn’t answered in the manner we desired.

Jesus assures of the effectiveness in the third part of the

Gospel reading this weekend. We know when someone is

serious about something when they are consistently focused

on one matter over another. If someone persistently asks us

to do something, we know they are serious about it. In the

same way, when we persistently present God with our
