Introducing my new associate—Mary Pearce, Realtor® 215-355-5100 ext. 2945

CLUBHOUSE REDECORATING UPDATETHE VILLAS AT FIVE PONDS Board of Directors and the Decorating Committee want to express to our residents a sincere and heartfelt thanks for your patience and cooperation during the “facelift” of our Clubhouse. It’s been a long journey as unforeseen repairs prolonged our completion. Our vendors worked tirelessly, even on weekends, to bring you a project to be proud of. You can’t begin to imagine the amount of time and effort that went into this makeover, and neither did we! As if this writing, our lighting is being installed February 19th & 20th. The week of February 24th carpeting replacement is scheduled. We now see the “light at the end of the tunnel.” As soon as we know the date for furniture deliveries, we will communicate that to you. A firm date to reopen is forthcoming. Just awaiting our Decorators’ Timeline. We hope you will appreciate and enjoy what will be the “jewel” of our community for a long time to come.

POOL ISSUE A RECENT INCIDENT causes us to remind all of our residents of the following: If you wish to bring your young grandchildren to one of our pools, even if they are well beyond the diaper stage of life, it is

probably best to require them to use our restrooms facilities prior to going into one of our pools. Of course, no one who is wearing diapers or needs to wear them—regardless of age—is ever allowed into one of our pools. We certainly are appreciative of the person reporting the issue, because no one should ever let others unknowingly swim in one our pools in what is probably contaminated water. We would like to once again remind everyone if you need to report a community emergency, you should call our Management Company, at 215-343 1550, and if it is not during business hours, the message at the end will give an emergency phone number to call. In this specific case, a Board member was called on their cell phone—on a Sunday—and upon receipt of the call wasn't even in the state of Pennsylvania.

ANNUAL PROPERTY INSURANCE PROOF THE VILLAS AT FIVE PONDS EXECUTIVE BOARD, effective, immedi-ately has eliminated the annual requirement of resident/owners to provide proof of their property insurance to the Villas at Five Ponds Community Association, 975 Easton Road, suite 102, Warrington, PA 18976. Please notify your Agent and/or your company that they no longer have to annually send the proof of insurance to the above address. This in no way alleviates you of the responsibility of having insurance for your property, see the requirements below, re-printed from our documents.

B. RESPONSIBILITIES:3. Owners are required to obtain and maintain insurance on their Units, which shall include coverage for damages or destruction by fire and other casualty, and liability coverage for injury to persons or damage to Property occasioned by any use of the Unit. In addition,

DOES BRETT BROWN DESERVE ANOTHER CHANCE?n Jake saMson, The Villa’S Voice guesT sPorTs rePorTer

I WROTE a couple of months back regarding the job status of Doug Pederson, and he ended up leading the Eagles to a surprise playoff berth despite all of the injuries that the team faced. Brett Brown faces a similar dilemma but due to

a different reason: expectations. To start with, I have been defending Brett Brown from the jump. He has been put through the absolute gauntlet being part of teams that were consistently in the basement of the NBA. He went through the “process”; the rebuild where the 76ers were bad, basically on purpose, in order to collect draft picks which would hopefully result in stars. They were able to hit on a couple of those, and they are now the franchise cornerstones in Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons, who are both signed in Philadelphia until 2023. They were able to turn that process that began with a 10-72 team, into a team that has arguably the best starting 5 in all of the NBA. After coming hot to start the season, this year has been a rather

weird one, which has the 76ers sitting in the #5 seed in the eastern conference at the all star break with 27 games remaining. They’re almost on pace to the same number of wins as last season, but the top of the Eastern Conference has stepped up and the 76ers are 1.5 games back of Miami, 4.5 back of Boston, 6 back of Toronto and 12.5 back of Milwaukee. Why is the seeding significant? The top 4 teams host a home playoff series, and the 76ers are somehow 25-2 at the Wells Fargo Center, and are 9-19 away from their home arena. This statistic has befuddled every fan of this team. Sure, they play off of the crowd, but there is no reason why they can’t take their talent on the road.

With the amount of talent they have, they should at least have 4 or 5 more road wins under their belt. That’s why Brett Brown’s seat is getting rather hot. If this 76ers team, whom had expecta-tions of championship or bust, bows out in the first round of the playoffs, the blame is going to have to be put somewhere. Unfortunately, with a bunch of new arrivals in the front office (GM Elton Brand) and on the court (Josh Richardson,

Al Horford), it may only go one place and that is to Brett Brown. If the 76ers make the Eastern Conference finals or better, he deserves another shot. If that doesn’t happen, the blame may ultimately fall on him.

ON THURSDAY, January 30 a group of members from the Five Ponds Singles Club celebrated our friend and neighbor, Jean Littel’s, 90th birthday at Angelo’s in Ambler.

90TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION!

BIRTHDAY CRUISE

RECENTLY, (from right to left) BEV & LARRY SAMSON had a lovely lunch in Deerfield Beach, Florida, during a visit with former Five Ponders, Danny & Paula Leder, who are happily settled into their new Florida home.

SHARAN & RICK RODGERS celebrated Sharan’s birthday last month on a Viking Heritage Cruise of the Carribean.

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Please be aware that we are still in the

process of having the Clubhouse updated and redecorated, throughout…

This leaves some areas—including the Ballroom—unavailable for periods during the process.

Please take that into consideration when planning for “in-house” activities, private rentals and events. We will notify you of actual dates & times as they become available.

Your understanding and cooperation is appreciated. The result should be well worth the effort.

TIPS TO AVOID TAX SCAMMERS & “GHOST” TAX PREPARERSIT’S THAT SOMETIMES dreaded time of year again, tax filing season! It seems as though every year there's an ever-growing list of tax-related scams to be aware of. The Bucks County Crimes Against Older Adults would like to warn not just seniors but all Bucks County residents of some of the red flags to be aware of related to tax scams. The Inter-nal Revenue Service has also been proactive in providing tips and alerts on their website (www.irs.gov) to warn taxpayers of some common tax-related scams to avoid. The information in your tax return contains everything that a scam artist needs to steal your identity, file tax returns on your behalf, or even steal your refund. Be vigilant and never provide any sensitive information over the telephone. Many of us are aware of the scam calls claiming to be from the IRS and telling consumers they’ll be arrested if they don’t submit payment over the phone via gift cards. The IRS will never make con-tact in this manner, nor will they ever ask you to pay a tax debt by wiring the money or purchasing gift cards. The good news is the federal government has made some progress in combating these scam calls. In recent years some of these scam artists, many located on the other side of the world, have been arrested and extradited to the US to face charges for their nefarious actions scamming consumer's out of millions of dol-lars and impersonating federal government officials. There are also many scams associ-ated with filing your taxes. Below are a few tips to help avoid some of the more common tax preparation scams:

• Be realistic. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. From companies that promise to file your taxes for free, to sites that claim you don't have to pay tax because it's unconstitutional—keep an eye out for de-liberately misleading statements and always look for and read the fine print.• Be informed. Before you file your taxes, spend a little time at the website for the IRS (www.irs.gov). • Never respond to unsolicited e-mail offers or requests for information. The IRS does not use e-mail to communicate any personal information, and legitimate tax-preparation companies should not approach you with unsolicited e-mail. These messages are most likely identity-theft phishing scams. • Choose your tax-preparer or tax preparation software with care. Ask people you trust for recommendations. For more information about e-file partners and tax software, visit the IRS website. Return Preparer Fraud: Dishonest re-turn preparers can cause many headaches for taxpayers who fall victim to their schemes. Such preparers make their money by skim-ming a portion of their clients' refunds and charging inflated fees for return preparation services. They attract new clients by promis-ing large refunds. Some preparers promote filing fraudulent claims for refunds on items such as fuel tax credits to recover taxes paid in prior years. Taxpayers should choose carefully when hiring a tax preparer. As the old saying goes, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” Remember that no mat-ter who prepares the return, the taxpayer is ultimately responsible for its accuracy. When it comes to preparing your taxes, consumers should avoid unethical tax return preparers, these are known as “ghost” pre-parers. By law, anyone who is paid to prepare or assist in preparing federal tax returns must

have a valid 2020 Preparer Tax Identifi-

cation Number, or PTIN. Paid preparers must sign the return and include their PTIN. But “ghost” preparers do not sign the return. Instead, they print the return and tell the taxpayer to sign and mail it to the IRS. Or, for e-filed returns, they prepare but refuse to digitally sign it as the paid preparer. According to the IRS, similar to other tax preparation schemes, dishonest and unscrupulous ghost tax return preparers look to make a fast buck by promising a big refund or charging fees based on a percent-age of the refund. These scam-mers hurt honest taxpayers who are simply trying to do the right thing and file a legitimate tax return. Ghost tax return preparers may also require payment in cash only and not pro-vide a receipt. This would be one of the biggest red flags to look out for. They may also invent income to erroneously qualify their clients for tax credits or claim fake deductions to boost their refunds or even attempt to direct refunds into their own bank account rather than the taxpayer's account. The IRS offers tips to help taxpayers choose a tax return preparer wisely. The IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications can help identify many preparers by type of credential or qualification. Consumers need to educate themselves on whom they're hiring and know if you're hiring a creden-tialed tax preparer or a preparer with more credentials such as Accountants and Certified Public Accountants, whose certifications can be searched through the Pennsylvania Bu-reau of Professional and Occupational Affairs. Taxpayers can report abusive tax preparers to the IRS. Use Form 14157, Complaint: Tax Return Preparer. If a taxpayer suspects a tax preparer filed or changed their tax return without their consent, they should file Form 14157-A, Tax Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit.
