In comprehending a text or story, reading interests are an important element

which effect the students‟s ability in understanding the story. The reading

interests, it is local and foreign reading interest which they can understand the

whole of the story or they can not catch the meaning behind its stories. Whereas,

the fuction of reading interests are to attract the students‟s attention as they can

comprehend the stories well. Based on the researcher‟s experience in teaching

practice program in SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara, The textbook which is used by the

English teacher contained many kinds of foreign stories that strange for the

students and difficult to understand by them. By this condition, this research is

comparing the reading comprehension of the students between the tenth grade

students of SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara in academic year 2017/2018 with local

stories reading interest and foreign stories reading interest.

The objective of this research is to find out if there is any significant difference of

the reading comprehension of the students between the tenth grade students of

SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara in academic year 2017/2018 with local stories reading

interest and foreign stories reading interest.

The method of this research is causal comparative non-experimental research. The

population was the tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara in the same

teacher of Compulsary English subject. The sample of this research was 60

students with local stories reading and foreign stories reading interest. To analyze

the data, the researcher used mean, standard deviation, and independent sample t-

test.

The result shows that the mean score of the reading comprehension of the students

with local stories reading interest is 78.94 and the standard deviation is 7.21, and

the score categorized as good. Meanwhile, the mean score of the reading

comprehension of the students with foreign stories reading interest is 75.15 and

the standard deviation is 8.1 and the score categorized as sufficient. Moreover, the

independent sample t-test with the level of significance 0.05 and degree of

freedom 58 shows that t-obtained is higher than t-table (to = 3.621 > ttab = 2.0017).

So, the conclusion of this research is there is a significant difference of the

reading comprehension of the students between the tenth grade students of SMA

N 1 Tahunan Jepara in academic year 2017/2018 with local stories reading

interest and foreign stories reading interest. It shows that the reading

comprehension of the students with local stories reading interest is better than the

reading comprehension of the students with foreign stories reading interest. The

suggestion from this research, the teacher can give the students more foreign

stories to read and learn. So that the students can learn another kinds of narrative

stories and it can make the students adapt with foreign stories easily so that it can

trigger their interest to enggage with it.

Dalam memahami sebuah teks atau cerita, ketertarikan membaca adalah elemen

penting yang berefek pada kemampuan siswa dalam memahami cerita.

Ketertarikan membaca dalam hal ini adalah ketertarikan membaca cerita dalam

negeri dan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar negeri yang mana mereka dapat

memahami keseluruhan verita atau mereka tidak dapat menangkap maksud

dibalik cerita tersebut. Yang mana, fungsi dari ketertarikan membaca adalah untuk

menarik perhatian siswa sehingga mereka dapat memahami cerita dengan baik.

Berdasarkan pada pengalaman peneliti dalam mengikuti program pelatihan

mengajar di SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara, Buku pegangan yang mana digunakan

oleh guru Bahasa Inggris berisikan banyak jenis cerita luar negeri yang asing bagi

siswa dan sulit untuk dipahami oleh mereka. Berdasarkan situasi ini, penelitian ini

membandingkan pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N

1 Tahunan Jepara pada tahun pelajaran 2017/2018 dengan ketertarikan membaca

cerita dalam negeri dan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar negeri.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang

bermakna pada pemahaman membaca siswa anta siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1

Tahunan Jepara pada tahun pelajaran 2017/2018 dengan ketertarikan membaca

cerita dalam negeri dan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar negeri.

Metode penelitian ini menggunakan desain kausal komparatif non eksperimental.

Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Tahunan

Jepara dengan guru dan mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris Wajib yang sama. Sampel

yang diambil berjumlah 60 siswa dengan ketertarikan membaca cerita dalam

negeri dan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar negeri. Untuk menganalisis data,

peneliti menggunakan formula nilai rata – rata, standar deviasi dan uji independen

sampel t-test.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa dengan ketertarikan membaca cerita

dalam negeri memiliki nilai rata – rata 78,94 dengan standar deviasi 7,21 dan nilai

ini dikategorikan baik. Sedangkan siswa dengan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar

negeri memiliki nilai rata – rata 75,15 dengan standar deviasi 8,1 dan nilai ini

dikategorikan cukup. Selanjutnya hasil uji independen sampel t-test dengan level

signifikansi 0,05 dan derajat kebebasan 58 menunjukkan bahwa t-hitung lebih

besar daripada t-tabel (thit= 3.621 > ttab = 2.0017).

Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah adanya perbedaan yang bermakna pada

pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa kelas sepuluh SMA N 1 Tahunan Jepara

pada tahun pelajaran 2017/2018 dengan ketertarikan membaca cerita dalam negeri

dan ketertarikan membaca cerita luar negeri. Saran dari penelitian ini, guru

diharapkan dapat memberi siswa lebih banyak cerita – cerita luar negeri untuk

dibaca dan dipelajari. Siswa dapat mempelajari cerita – cerita luar negeri lainnya

dan mereka dapat beradaptasi dengan cerita – cerita tersebut dan itu bisa menarik

ketertarikan membaca mereka dengan cerita – cerita tersebut
