APOSTLES CREED Jesus was Crucified --- So what?

We say, I believe in God the Father, AND …

AND IN JESUS CHRIST, WHO: Suffered under Pontius Pilate Crucified Died Was buried

So what did He do on the cross?

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Substituted for us “God made him who had no sin to BE

SIN FOR US, that we might received the righteousness of god. (2 Corinthians 5:23)

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Purchased us.

“You (the lamb of God) have purchased with your blood people from every tribe.

(Revelation 5:9)

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Ransomed us

Jesus Christ have himself as a ransom for all.

(1 Timothy 2:5-6)

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Sacrificed for our sin “by the sacrifice of

Himself.” (Hebrews 9:26)

That’s why John the Baptist said

“Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Obeyed God’s will to die for us. “By the obedience of one, many will be

made righteous.” (Romans 5:19)

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Made atonement (atone means “at + one,” making us at

one with God.)

“He is the ATONING SACRIFICE for our sins, and not for only for ours, but also for the sins of the whole world.”

(1 John 4:10)

SINCE JESUS WAS TRULY HUMAN, He was able to suffer and die He was able to take our place, to receive

the punishment that we were due to receive

SINCE JESUS WAS TRULY GOD He was so valuable that His death was

sufficient to pay for the sins of everyone

ON THE CROSS, JESUS Defeated Satan.

By His death, he destroyed the devil, who holds the power of death, and freed those who had fear of death.”

(Hebrews 2:14-15)

JESUS DIED “SO THAT …” He may lead you to God. 1 Peter 3:18 He could rescue us from wickedness

(Titus 2:14) We might live together with him (Thessalonians 5:10) We might not live for ourselves, but for

him (2 Corinthians 15:5)

JESUS DIED “SO THAT …” We would no longer be slaves of sin

(Romans 6:6) We would “declare the praises of Him

who called us out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Peter 2:9)

To enable us to serve him without fear (Luke 1:75)

HE DIDN’T JUST DIE --- Jesus rose from the dead so --- 1.To show his promise came true

(Jesus had told his followers that he would be arrested, suffer, and be killed, but that after three days he would rise from the dead. Mark 10:33-4

And …

JESUS ROSE ALSO TO: 2. To prove that he is God

“He was declared the son of God with Power by the resurrection from the dead” Romans 1:5

And ….

AND JESUS ROSE SO --- 3. to prove he can also make us rise

from the dead.

Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”

John 11:25

AND JESUS ROSE SO WE 4. We get the Holy spirit to give us

power

5. we get new life

The skit is about the resurrection ---

BENEFITS FROM THE CROSS AND RESURRECTION: Brought near to God by the blood of Christ

(Ephesians 2:13) The gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23) Everyone who believes has forgiveness of

sins (Acts 10:43) We have peace with God (Romans 5:1) We are God’s children (1 John 5:1)

We are justified (accepted as innocent) (Romans 3:24)

AND …

WE HAVE NEW BIRTH (NEW LIFE)

“Once you were dead in your trespasses and sins,

But now in Christ jesus, God has made you

ALIVE AGAIN (Ephesians 2:1-4)

SAVED Three meanings. I am saved from the:

PENALTY of sin. (Forgiven for PAST sins) POWER of sin. (can fight sin in the

PRESENT) PRESENCE of sin. (no sin will be in

heaven)

Salvation refers to “being saved.”

LUTHER EXPLAINS THAT … Jesus has REDEEMED me, a lost and

condemned creature, PURCHASED and WON me from sin, death, and the power of the devil,

So that I may belong to him, and live in His kingdom

REDEEMED MEANS Buying back a slave

Jesus bought us from the slavery of sin. Luther explains: “not with gold or silver, but with his holy precious blood,

That I may be his own, and live under him in his kingdom

IF REDEEM MEANS … Buy back a slave. Are we slaves?

The Bible says, “Whoever sins is a slave of sin; but if the son sets you free, you will be truly free.”

Redemption is the act of redeeming

Today’s theme verse follows:

REDEMPTION VERSE He has rescued us from the power of

darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the

forgiveness of sins.

Colossians 1:13-14
