Japanese invented the jin riki sha,or "man-powered car," backin 1867,when a trio in Tokyo drew inspiration from horse &carriage.

Japan had nearly 200000 on its streets, and it spreadthroughout Asia.

India's British rulers made them the cheap mode of transportin 1919.

Chinese merchants introduced the vehicle to Calcutta in1900 to carry their goods.

Forty-nine years later,China banned the conveyance afterthe Communist takeover.

Hand-pulled rickshaws are known locally in West Bengal astana rickshaws - or if you're a non-Bengali,haath rickshaws.

ACTION

In August 2005,the Communist government of WEST BENGALannounced plans to completely ban rickshaws.

The rickshaw was officially banned in November

2006 by an ordinance of the West BengalGovernment .Government planned to ban rickshaws in order to

improve poor global image.

Kolkata is the only place in the whole world.Govt. wanted to replace these with three-wheelercycle rickshaws propelled by better technology orauto-rickshaws.

Govt. said it will offer loans to the rickshaw pullersto buy other vehicles.
