President Jon Bednarski As I begin my 2-year-term, I am reminded of the great Society President's that have come before me. I am humbled by the knowledge and leadership they have shown over the years. Many of you know me by my Council work serving as the Promotion and Advertising Committee Chairman. For those of you who don't, I grew up in Vermont spending most summers on my uncle's dairy farm, haying and showing cat- tle at county fairs. I moved to Kentucky in 1980 with a log home and timber frame producer as a regional sales manager. In 2004 at 50 years young, I decided to start farming when my wife, Sylvia, and my children, Kristin and Kyle, presented me with three Belties for Father's Day. With over 30 years in sales, advertising and marketing ex- perience, my excitement for promoting our unique Belted Galloway breed could never be greater! Some of my goals for the Society may be a little different from my predeces- sors, but I believe equally important for our organization. First and foremost will be recruiting new members, but equally as important, retaining the Society members we now have. Your dues, along with the cattle registrations and transfers, provide funds to run our organization. Simply put, without them and your support, we cannot operate the Soci- ety. Please renew your upcoming membership for 2012 so we can provide you with the benefits and services you deserve. Another personal goal, will be to visit member farms in each of the lower 48 states during my term. I am very inter- ested in what our members are doing with their Beltie herds, but I also want to know how, the Society can be of service to you. My plan is to feature (in my monthly newsletter col- umn to the membership) a unique story or profile on a farm or two from each State. My wife, Sylvia, who just retired from over 30 years of teaching, will be documenting our travels and posting pictures on the Belted Galloway Face- book site for all to enjoy. If you have thoughts about recruiting or maintaining mem- bership, or have ideas for promoting our breed, please let me know. In addition, if you would like to share stories about your farm or cattle, we would enjoy stopping by your farm for a visit. I plan to continue my work on the Promotion and Advertising Committee, and keeping the Belted Galloway Breed in the spotlight will always be one of my priorities! Thank you for this opportunity and I hope to hear from you soon. President’s message Scot Adams, President New England Galloway Group I am happy to announce the 22 nd Annual Na- tional Belted Galloway Sale and Fryeburg Youth Show scheduled to be held in Fryeburg, Maine April 26-30, 2012. It is my pleasure to serve as the Belted Galloway Breed Representative for the 2012 National Sale. Please note that all sale consignments close February 1, 2012. The auction will be carried live on the web by EDJE- Cast.com. This will allow all breeders near and far to attend and bid during the auction, even if they can’t be there in person. President Jon Bednarski As I begin my 2-year-term, I am reminded of the great Society President's that have come before me. I am humbled by the knowledge and leadership they have shown over the years.

Many of you know me by my Council work serving as the Promotion and Advertising Committee Chairman. For those of you who don't, I grew up in Vermont spending most summers on my uncle's dairy farm, haying and showing cat-tle at county fairs. I moved to Kentucky in 1980 with a log home and timber frame producer as a regional sales manager. 2011 Platinum Lifetime Awards Welcome to Council

We welcome he following individuals who have been elected or re-elected to serve on Council beginning in January 2011. Greg Hipple (IA) and his wife, Pat, own Sutliff Belties, of So-lon, Iowa. Sutliff Belties is a family farming operation including 200 acres of row crops, 40 acres of hay, and of course cattle. The farm is located on the west end of the Historic Sutliff Bridge that spans the Cedar River in east central Iowa. Currently, the Hipple’s have 22 Belted Galloway females plus a few bulls. In addition to Belted Galloway cattle, commercial cattle are raised. The first Belted Galloway the Hipple’s owned was a gift for Pat, which fulfilled a long-time dream to own one. Greg is in his second term as a Director of the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association, and currently serves as the Secretary of that organization. Greg told us that in order to support his farming habit, he has worked as a Dep-uty Sheriff for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office in Iowa City, Iowa for the past 24 years. Greg is an Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Radar/Lidar (laser) Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, D.A.R.E. Instructor, and field training officer. Greg told us his duties include just about anything you can imagine as a patrol deputy working the day shift. Greg & Pat have 2 grown children, Janeen and Gary. Brice Jackson (IN) graduated from Purdue University with a degree in animal sciences, focusing on animal health, genetics and nutrition. For several years, he was an animal health consultant for Anchor Laboratories, and later he founded a veterinary farm supply company that distributed vet supplies and customized min-erals for individual farms. He also served as the information sys-tems manager for Lear Automotive. Brice and his family have raised cattle since he was a youngster, first Polled Herefords and later Simmentals, showing nationally for many years. Brice and his wife Jane live on a farm 30 miles west of Indianapolis, near Greencastle, Indiana. They, with the help of their son Jeff, raise and sell Belted Galloway and Simmental cattle, offer hoof trim-ming services, and sell show supplies, breeding semen and spe-cialty feeds. Over the years, Brice has been active in his commu-nity, coaching, mentoring youngsters, and promoting cattle in the 4-H program. He is committed both to promoting Beltie cattle and also to working with Belted Galloway breeders to increase aware-ness and enthusiasm for the breed. Kris von Dohrmann (NH) grew up in a very small town in northern New Hampshire. Kris raised horses until 1995 when she got involved with Belted Galloway cattle at East View farm in Vermont. With an active 4-H club and up to 100 head of Belties, the farm showed, and sold animals across the country. In 2002, the herd was sold and Kris relocated back to her own farm in New Hampshire. In 2003, Kris’ Otokahe Farm became a reality. Kris and husband, Bert, have a herd which has grown to 20 head, sell-ing breeding stock, freezer beef and mentoring new Beltie enthusi-asts. The latest project is the development and marketing of “Belted Beef Jerky” since the summer of 2009. Kris’ secon-dary education is in forest management and business. She is em-ployed by the state of New Hampshire Forest Protection as a forest fire lookout tower watchman and as secretary to North Region Headquarters. Kris is a retired 4-H leader, certified by the National Serve Safe Food Safety Network for safe food handling, and member of New England Galloway Group, supporting their heifer project and sales. Kris currently serves as the Chair of the Chat-field Scholarship Committee.

Exhibitor of the Year

Sunnybrook Farms is located in Belvidere, IL and owned by the Willis family. They first became involved with Belted Galloway cattle in 2000. Two females were purchased and added to a prominent Angus herd. With the addition of Line-tree’s Pistol Pete and two more females, the resulting matings proved to be the foundation for the herd. The combination of quality, carcass, and conformation produced cattle that per-formed in the show ring and the pasture. As the herd grew and space was limited, a decision was made to disperse the Angus herd and concentrate on the Belties. The farm is based around 20 proven Belted Galloway fe-males and has produced or developed three show females of the year, four show bulls of the year, three dams of the year, three sires of the year, two cow/calf pairs of the year and a National carcass winner at Louisville. The farm has also implemented the use of production re-cords, DNA trait identification, and Carcass results from the use of ultrasound and slaughter data to further the predictabil-ity of the offspring from the herd.

Breeder of the Year With the longest continuously run herd of Belted Galloways in the United States, Aldermere Farm has provided founda-tion cattle to many Beltie breeders throughout the country and continues Albert Chatfield’s goal to market the breed and educate people about the values of our breed.
