from Alex and Tampi...greetingsgreetings
Hej småles,
Ahhh it's autumn! We love this season because
the weather is so cooling in the Magical Forest.
Many of you have lots of cool idea to improve
Småland. One of the most popular ideas we
get is whether we can create a Quingdom
for teenagers.
We would have loved to keep you as a Smålish
citizen forever, but every time a human turns 11
years old, they become invisible to us and since
we won't be able to see you, we could walk right
into you! That's why we will have to say Hej då
when you get older.
But don't be sad, because we and all other
Smålish citizens will always remember each other.
Another way to put your cool ideas to use is
to take part in our upcoming Småland General
Elections and run for Minister! Whether you're
small or big, tall or short, Alex and Tampi
welcome all småles to apply to be a Minister!
All you need to have is lots of love for our
Quingdom. Application for the General Elections
will take place in the entire month of September.
Flip to page 7 for more information!
Meanwhile, we hope you enjoy reading
this issue and that you’ll have fun trying out the yummy recipes on pages 16-20!

“Hi Alex, Tampi, and Lele, I really enjoy going to the IKEA store. My father fixed up a swing in the balcony last night and we played with it until we were red in the face and had to bathe again! I look forward to going to IKEA again!”
“Hej Alex, Tampi and Lele, here are some tips. I wish you can put more play things like slides and swings in the Småland play area. And hopefully, allow kids even taller than 1.30m to enter! I do love playing in the play area and I love eating the chicken nuggets at the IKEA restaurant. I hope you like my letter!”

“Hi Alex and Tampi (Lele too!), this is my first time writing to you! Here is a riddle for you. Which shape has only two sides? The answer is the.......CIRCLE! It only has the inside and the outside!”
Chu Sze Yun, 10 years old
“Dearest Alex and Tampi, this is going to be my last time writing to you as I am turning 11 soon. But before I leave, I want to say a HUGE thank you to all the Ministers for taking care of Småland. To the chefs at the restaurant, your nuggets and french fries are delicious! To the secret service, thanks for organizing fun activities just for us. And lastly, to Alex and Tampi, you are the best!”
Jeslyn Chua, 8 years old
“Hello Alex and Tampi (and Lele too!), this is my 1st time writing to you and I have an idea for you. Can we replace the balls in the ball pit with real lingonberries? So we can squash them for a fast drink!”
BEST LETTER
Chen Yi Qiang, 8 years old
“Dear Alex, Tampi and Lele, I am turning 11 soon and I have some suggestions for fun activities before I leave.
1. A lava flowing party to celebrate birthdays. The lava party can have a pit of fiery balls.
2. A paper porridge party. Alex and Tampi can eat porridge while the children are playing!
3. A money party for children to go treasure hunting. Children can run around a pit of sand and find hidden boxes with dållars in them!
I really love you three cute little buddies.”
Tan Yu Xin, 8 years old
“Dearest Alex, Tampi and Lele, I love reading the Bug News. I want to share a joke I heard in school.
Question: “What is the tallest building in the world?”
Answer: “The library, because it has the most stories!”
Thumbs up for IKEA and Småland!”

swedishnessswedishnessAutumn in Sweden
Plockasvamp (August)
Apple month (Late Sept - Oct)
Kanelbullens Dag (4 Oct)
Autumn is a season for foraging and harvesting. After a warm summer, the fruits are ripe and ready to be eaten. It seems like the kitchen gets a little busier in autumn as appetites grow with the abundant fresh harvest.
Mushroom-picking is a Swedish favourite pastime, especially in the forested region of Småland. Baskets in hand, families would go into the woods to look for mushrooms. The occasional blueberries and lingonberries are also a welcome fare.
In Sweden, October is also known as the ‘Apple Month’. This is when apples ripen in the gardens and orchards and it is time to enjoy them. In the homes of many Swedes, the smell of baked apple pies fills the air.
In some cities, whole markets are dedicated to all kinds apple, from the fruit to the pies and even to apple art. The Kivik Apple Market in Sweden, for example, is known for huge paintings made entirely out of whole apples – some 50,000
of them in a single painting. You too, can join in the fun! Make your own apple art by carving out patterns from the apple skin, or challenge your friend to make the longest apple peel.
The cinnamon bun is so well loved in Sweden it even has its own national day. The tradition of baking cinnamon buns on this day began in 1999 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Hembakningsrådet, which translates roughly to the “Home Baking Council”. Since then, Swedes were hooked on the little sugary bun that has come to symbolise warmth, generosity, childhood and home.16
Here are 3 easy recipes that you can try with your parents and siblings.
What you’ll need:
Makes 4 “pizzas” • 4 large portobello mushrooms • 3 tbsp olive oil • 8 large eggs • 1/4 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp black pepper • 1 tbsp unsalted butter • Bacon/ham cut into small cubes • Mozzarella cheese (or your favourite cheese) to sprinkle
Steps: 1) Preheat the oven to 218ºC. 2) Brush off any remaining dirt on the mushrooms. Remove the stem and then use a spoon to gently scrape out the gills inside the mushroom. Brush the mushrooms lightly with olive oil and place them in a baking dish cap sides up. Roast the mushrooms for 8 - 10 mins (or more if your mushrooms are larger and thicker). 3) While the mushrooms are roasting, fry the bacon/ham until slightly crispy. 4) Whisk the eggs, salt, and pepper in a mixing bowl. Put the butter in a large heavy non-stick pan over medium heat. When the butter has melted, pour the egg mixture into the pan and turn the heat down to medium low. Start slowly scraping the eggs from the bottom of the pan to make it scrambled. Add in the bacon/ham. 5) Put the pizza together. Remove the mushrooms from the oven and blot away any excess juices. Spoon 1/4 of the scrambled eggs on top of each mushroom. Top the eggs with mozzarella cheese and serve your pizza!

Let's dip! Caramel applesWhat you’ll need:
• 3 - 4 small, well refrigerated apples • Ice cream sticks • Measuring cup (microwavable) • 2 tbsp of milk • Chewy caramels (one bag) • Wax paper • Paper plates • Cooking spray • Toppings: rainbow/chocolate rice, oreo crumbs, crushed nuts, granola, chocolate chips, edible chocolate flowers
Steps: 1) Take your apples out of the fridge, take the stems off and push an ice cream stick into the top of the apple. Place in the freezer for 5 mins while getting your other ingredients ready. 2) Put your toppings into individual paper plates, ready for rolling. 3) Tear off small squares of wax paper and spray with cooking spray. 4) Place your caramels and milk into a measuring cup. Microwave on high for 2 mins, stirring half way through until it melts. 5) Let the caramel sit for 1 min, and then dip each apple. Let the excess drip off and spoon off any big globs. Roll the apples in the topping, place on wax paper, and immediately put it into the freezer for 10 - 15 mins. After that, place it in the refrigerator compartment to chill overnight (or a few hours).
Tips! -You can replace the ice cream stick with a fork if its easier. -Make apple dippers! You can cover each slice with a different topping too!
18
Let’s bake! Cinnamon buns What you’ll need:
• 3 tbsp sugar • 2 tsp cinnamon powder • 1/4 tsp nutmeg • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 1/4 tsp salt • 2 tbsp cold unsalted butter • 1 large egg • 1/4 cup whole milk • 1 tbsp melted butter • 5 tbsp icing sugar
Steps: 1) Preheat the oven to 190ºC. 2) In a small bowl stir together 2 tbsp of sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir together flour and remaining tablespoons of sugar, baking powder and salt. 3) Cut butter into small pieces and with your fingertips or a pastry blender, blend into flour mixture until it resembles coarse meal. In another small bowl whisk together the egg and milk and add to the flour mixture, stirring until just combined. 4) Transfer the mixture to a lightly floured surface and gently knead, 3 or 4 times, until it forms a dough. 5) Pat dough into a 25cm by 15cm rectangle (about 2.5cm thick). Brush dough with melted butter and sprinkle evenly with cinnamon sugar. 6) Beginning with the breadth of the rectangle, roll up the rectangle to form a 15cm log and cut it into 4 even pieces. Arrange the pieces on a baking sheet, with the cut sides up and with the seams touching. 7) Bake the buns for around 18 mins until they turn golden brown. 8) In another small bowl, stir icing sugar and milk until smooth and drizzle generously over the warm buns. Tadah, enjoy your treat!

Dogs and cats are some of the most well-loved household pets.
Here are some interesting facts about dogs and cats that can help
you become a more responsible pet owner or lover.
did you knowdid you know
You may think there’s nothing wrong with sharing your favourite food with a pet, but some of these foods can harm them.
Some food items that both dogs and cats can’t consume include ice cream, chocolates, grapes, raisin, onions, raw eggs and candy.
Dogs and cats like to be loved and petted in different ways. In general, most doggies enjoy pats and strokes. They also like having their bellies rubbed. Cats on the other hand love getting their ears and under chin scratched.
Feed them right!
Like humans, dogs and cats both need lots of love and care.
Never abuse or neglect them. We wouldn’t want someone doing that to us now would we?
Treat them right!
Approach them right!
Love them right!
The Animal Lovers League takes in stray and abandoned dogs and cats and gives them a place to call home at Pets Villa. Currently, Pets Villa houses around 350 dogs and 250 cats. Most of these animals are unwanted, abused or strays from the streets. www.animalloversleague.com | www.facebook.com/animalloversleague
As a rule of thumb, never pet a dog that is eating or in possession of an object.
Standing over a cat makes them nervous (as this is what predators do before they attack!). Bring yourself to the cat’s level by sitting or squatting so they can be more or less face to face with you.
Always ask for permission before patting someone else’s pet too. Owners generally know their pet’s personality the best.
