LINEAGE COUNTS. Take, forexample, the new BruckmannAbaco 47. You’ll find her roots in

the Abaco 40, a proven design noted forelegance, style, performance, andmaneuverability. Like her little sister, the47 came to life on the drawing board ofnoted designer Mark Ellis.

“We had a client who was in theprocess of downsizing from a muchlarger boat,” explained Mark Bruck-mann, owner of Bruckmann Yachts, which is based in Mississauga, Ontario.“He was looking at the Abaco 40, butsoon realized it was too small for hisneeds. He ended up commissioning usto build a larger two-cabin, two-headversion of the 40.”

The Abaco 47 is largely the same con-cept as the 40—single engine, sea-kindlylow-speed planing hull, great maneuver-ability, and high efficiency. “Our empha-

sis has always been on our ability to semi-custom build-to-order within the frame-work of our tooling,” Bruckmann said. The result is an innovative hull form that

will plane at just 12 knots, cruise in themid-20s, and scoot for home at 30 knotswhen weather closes in.

The boat’s overall length is 46'5" and

The Bruckmann Abaco 47 was designed by Mark Ellis for a customer who wanted a bigger version of the Abaco 40.

The pilothouse features an L-shaped settee with a custom dining table that converts to a double berth.

the beam is 15'. “She’s not overly beamylike some yachts in this class,” Bruck-mann said. “And at just 30,000 poundsdisplacement, we’re able to get great per-formance out of a single diesel.”

Bruckmann argues that a single-engine configuration has significantadvantages over twin engines. “Our singleis delivering mid-20s cruising, but withhalf the engine and drive-train mainte-nance, half the running gear-related drag, and greater fuel efficiency,” he said. One

of the biggest advantages of single versustwin is the elbow room in the engineroom. “It’s so roomy you can dancearound that thing!” Bruckmann added.

With a draft of 4'11", the 47 is justbegging for a run down to the Bahamas. And like all Bruckmanns she’s dressed tothe nines in deep, rich teak and lustrousvarnish.

Standard power on the Abaco 47 isCaterpillar, available in Bruckmann’spreferred single-engine diesel or twin-

engine configurations. The single-engineversion calls on a Caterpillar C18,pumping out 1,136 hp. A healthy center-line skeg safeguards the 47’s runninggear and delivers exceptional trackingand stability in a variety of conditions.Opt for the twin-engine version, andyou’ll have twin Caterpillar C8.7 641-hpdiesels and a top-end speed of 34 knots.

The sweeping sheer, low pilothouse, and dramatically raked windshields thatEllis designed suggest a classic elegance

not often found in today’s yacht offer-ings. The cockpit features built-in seat-ing, perfect for entertaining. From oneof the two Stidd helm seats in the pilot-house, the view is virtually unobstructedfore, aft, and athwartship, making close-quarter maneuvering a simple task, especially with variable-speed bow andstern thrusters. The pilothouse featuresa luxurious settee, L-shaped with a cus-tom dining table that converts to a com-fortable double berth. A second adja-cent settee includes a flat-screentelevision lift.

Step down into the main cabin, andyou’ll find an island queen berth with ensuite head in the owners’ cabin. A guestcabin has a double berth or twin singles tostarboard, along with a second head. Thefunctional galley is to port with all of theconveniences you’d expect. Open to thepilothouse, the galley is bright and airy.

The first was launched in Septemberand debuted at the United States Power-boat Show in Annapolis en route to herhome port of Palm Beach. “We hadexcellent response at the show,” Bruck-mann said, “and the 47 checked all of theboxes for her new owner.” ✮
