His First five years with Haleema Al Ssa’deyah \حليمة السعدية

‘Abdu Allaahe Muhammad S’eed Al Thuwaybee and his father the poet of the

tribe of ‘Utaybah in the Arabian Peninsula Muhammad Sa’eed Al Thuwaybee

Both these two men, father and son, are poets and they are the children of Thuayb, the

father of Haleema Al Ssa’deyah, the wet nurse of the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa

‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam. The father is also the Chief of the tribe of Banoo Sa’ad ben

Bakr. I had the good lucks of meeting with both of them in their building, where the

ground floor is their real estate office, and the upper floors are their living quarters. The

building is of many floors and a stone’s throw from the Ka’bah, situated next to Masjed

‘Umar ben Al Khattaab, where we prayed together, and behind the Toonesee hospital.

The father, as he told me, was for fifteen years and until he resigned the administrator of

the Mashaa’er (The sites of Hajj): Mena, Muzadalefah, ‘Arafaat, Al Sharaae’ etc.

They were both likeable, forthcoming and nice men.

I met with them in the evening of Tuesday 28 Jamaadu Al Aakher 1432 A.H.,

corresponding to June 31, 2011CE.

I went to their office after talking to the son over the telephone for several times and after

visiting their village of Al Ddahaaseen, about 200 kilometers south of Makkah Al

Mukkarramah, South/East of the city of Al Ttaa-ef.

The tribe territory is called “Banee Sa’d.” Muhammad told me that there are fifty three

villages in this tribal territory. The name of the tribe is:

Al Th-thuwaybaat, and they are the children of Thu’ayb, father of Haleema bentu

Thu’ayb the foster mother of the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam: ‘Abdu Allaahe ben Al Haareth bin Shejnatu ben Jaaber ben Rezaam ben

Naaserah ben Qusayyata ben Nasr ben Sa’de ben Nakr ben Hawaazen ben Mansoor

ben Cekremah ben Khasafata ben Qays ben ’Aylaan ben Mudar ben Nezaar ben

Ma’add ben ’Adnaan. I found the website, their names and telephone numbers of these gentleman in the internet

while look for the place where Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa

Aalehe Wa Sallam had spent the first five years of his life. Their website address is:

The village of Haleemah

The village of Haleema has changed name many time during the centuries. Some times

its name was “Qaryatu Al Qenayyan”, other times “Qaryatu Al Qerayn” because it is

located on top of a mountain, and the head is called “Al Qarnu” in Arabic. Today the

name of this village is قرية الدهاسين الذويبات “Qaryatu Al Ddahaaseen Al

Thuwaybaat”. The village is located in the Valley of وادي الشوحطة “Waadee Al Sh-

shawhatah” South/East of Al Taa-ef and it is part of the Administrative Province of

Makkah Al Mukarramah.

The village was also named by Muhammad Sa’eed Al Thuwaybee, as he told me, also

Qaryatu Al Ssayyedah Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah”, meaning قرية السيدة حليمة السعدية

“The Village of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah.”

The distance between this village and Al Taa-ef is between 65 km if you take the

unpaved road after Al Taa-ef and about 80 km if you take the mostly unasphalted

roadway. Which ever way you take, take your food and water along with you, for there is

nowhere you can buy them. We lost our way several times on top of mountains and in

valleys.

Masjedu Haleema Al Sas’deyah/مسجد حليمة السعدية

The room where the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used to

lived the first five years of his life in this world together with his foster mother was

converted into a Masjed in year five of Hejrah.

The Emaam of the Masjed of the Ddaheesen village, whom I met there told me the

following story on the history of this house.

In the morning I came in this village I encountered on the road opposite the masjed a car

going the opposite direction. We stopped and I asked the driver and only passenger of

that car, after greeting him and introducing myself by name and country of origin, if he

could help me to find the masjed of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah. He returned my salaams and

introduced himself also by name and his name was Safar Sa’ad Al Thuwaybee and

pointed his hand to a place on the mountain opposite to where we were standing and said:

“that is where is the masjed is, on top of that mountain.” Between where we were

standing and the mountain there was a quite large valley, with a lot of barbered wires that

dividing it into sections, with the purpose of preventing sheep from entering it to and

graze in it, as I learned later by Muhammad. In this valley there was also a graveyard

surrounded by walls. This Imaam was about forty years old and had a nice face, and he

related to me the history of this masjed and the time that Prophet Muhammad had spent

in this village. What he said was exactly what was in the seerah book of ibnu Ishaq and

other books as well. I was very pleased of what he said to me and I handed him my

agenda-book and my pen and asked him to right down for me in Arabic what he had said

to me verbally. He was kind to do so. Here is what he said:

“Do you see the spot where there are a lot of stones on the mountain facing us?” I said:

“Yes.” He said: “In that exact spot was the room of Haleema Al Sa’deyah located. Later

that house (for houses at that time, as Muhammad’s father told me later were made of

only one room where the whole family lived together) was demolished and on its spot a

masjed was built that was five to seven meters. People used to pray in this masjed, and

myself performed salaat in it thirty years ago.”

The writing of emaam Safar

Here is what emaam Safar wrote for me:

“Thirty years ago I saw with my own eyes a small village (which was totally erased to the

ground by unknowns as I was told and read in their website as well, as you can see from

the pictures below) where there was a masjed in it, five to seven meters on all sides called

“Masjedu Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah”.

People used to perform salaats in this masjed and so did I.

In the year fourteen hundred and one Hejree a righteous man got permission from the

government to demolish this masjed and to rebuild a modern one in its place. When the

masjed was demolished, scholars objected to its reconstruction for fear that people from

around the world might travel to it to perform salaats in it in manner similar to their

traveling to the Masjedu Al Haraame in Makkah Al Mukarramh, and that in the future

might lead to sherk (Disbelief). Then the whole masjed was demolished, but it remained

in the heart of the people for their love of Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe

Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam. People honor and respect the people of this village because

the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was raised and lived

here. The exact spot where the masjed was located is clear and evident.

The scholars also reported that Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah accepted Islaam, and it was

reported to me that there is a book or a manuscript called “Al Durratu Al Jaseematu Fee

Islaame Al Ssayyedah Haleemah (There are many books which report that Haleemah

embraced Islaam, migrated to Al Madeenah Al Munawwarah to Allaah and His

Messenger Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam, died there and was

buried in the graveyard of Al Baqee’, and Allaah knows best).” End quotation of this

emaam.

This good emaam gave me his cell phone number and invited me to dinner in Al Ttaa-ef,

and I thanked him but declined for I wanted to go back to Makkah Al Mukarramah. In the

week after this I called him over the phone for him to explain to me certain things related

to my visit to his village. This emaam, as I came to know later, is the son in-law of the

chief of the tribe Muhammad Sa’eed Al Thuwaybee, and brother-in-law of ‘Abdu

Allaahe Muhammad Sa’eed for he is the husband of his sister.

The old man

While I was still talking to the emaam another car pulled behind us and in it was an old

man in the passenger seat and a young driver, and the old man joined me and the emaam

who was writing for the history of the house of Haleemah and of the village. After the

emaam left the old man said to me: “You are a fortunate man, for you have met with this

emaam who is a scholar and knowledgeable man and he knows the history of this

village.” He further said:

“The knowledge of Al Shaykh Safar is not to be found in any book and there is no one

else or very few people who can relate to you what he did. We inherited these

information from our grandfathers who related it to their children the exact spot where

the house of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah was and the place where Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe

Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used to shepherd the flock, and the spot where his holy

chest was split open.” End of quote.

The access road

I asked the emaam if there was an access road to the house of Haleemah and he said:

“follow me and I will show it to you, “ but it took time for our car to make a u turn

because the dirt road was very narrow and on the edge of a mountain, and by the time we

did so he was gone and nowhere to bee seen! It was Friday and he had to hurry to the

masjed for the Khutbah!

Muhammad Sa’eed Al Thuwaybee/محمد سعيد الذويبي

Muhammad Sa’eed Al Thuwaybee said to me:

“1. On the lower side of the mountain where the village of Haleemah Al Sa’deyah was

located, the house of each family was made up of one room only and that room was their

bedroom, living room where they received their guests, kitchen and dining room. Then

gradually people started to build another room on the upper side of the mountain, where

the Al Ddahaaseen village is located today. This way the two village co-existed.

2. The masjed built on the site of the house of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah has been

renovated many time over the centuries. On the stones of its walls were written Aayahs of

the Quraan and Hadeeths, and every time it was demolished and rebuilt with the same

stones, it was possible that these stones might move to other areas or walls of the masjed.

3. On the stone over the door of the masjed there was carved the palm of a hand and its

fingers, and I saw this with my own eyes, and I do not know what the meaning of that

was.

4. When the masjed was demolished for the last time, the stones of its walls were buried

in its ground, and if we dig the ground of the masjed we can retrieve them.

5. When I was a child and did not know how to perform salaat and was sitting next to my

father who was praying I saw a light coming out of the house of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah

and illuminated the opposite mountain, and there is a valley between them. When my

father completed his salaat I told him what I have seen and he said to me: “Do not say

anything to anyone about this.”

6. The length of the masjed was about eighteen meters and fourteen meters wide.

7. The area surrounded by four walls in the valley is the graveyard of the village then and

now.

8. In the valley there is also and area called وادي الملكين “Waadee Al Malakayne” (The

Valley of the Two Angels) (Where the holy chest of the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe

Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was split open by the two angels during his stay with

Haleemah).” End of quotation.

The poet gave me as a present a book of poetry containing also some of his.

My visit to Masjedu Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah /مسجد حليمة السعدية

I visited the masjedu Haleema Al Ssa’deyah and the village of Al Ddahaaseen on Friday

24 of Jamaadu Al Aakher 1432 A.H. corresponding to May 27, 2011 CE.

My walk in the Valley

After the meeting with emaam Safar, I crossed the valley to get to the house of Haleemah

Al Ssa’deyah on top of the lower part of the mountain. The valley was about 1.5-2km.

wide.

This is the valley where Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam used to tend to the sheep of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah. I was elated that Allaah

allowed me to walk on that ground. It is also the valley where his holy chest Sallaa

Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was split open by Jebreel and Mekaaeel.

Al hamdu le Allaahe Rabbe al ‘aalameena!

While crossing this valley I had to negotiate a number of barbered wires, and at one point

one of its blades pierced my right thigh.

While crossing the valley I saw a lot of sheep droppings and remembered what the

Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam had said:

ذف بيننا بالجلةفبينا أنا ذات يوم منتبذ من أهلي في بطن واد مع أتراب لي من الصبيان نتقا

The Hadeeth means:

“One day while I was away from my family in the middle of a valley and we were

throwing sheep droppings at each other”

I was very happy that I was walking on the ground where the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu

‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam walked on and my eyes were seeing the same

environment the eyes of the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa Sallam saw.

While crossing the valley I saw a car on the access roadway to the house of Haleema Al

Ssa’deya! I was very happy that we did not find that access road!!!

The house of Haleema Al Ssa’deyah

After crossing the valley I climbed the mountain and came in the house of Haleemah Al

Ssa’deyah, a house without walls. The house is delimitated by stones, as you can see

from the pictures below.

In this house, where I was standing Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa

’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam lived for five years!

The village of Haleemah

On this area of the mountain there are:

1. The house of Haleema Al Ssa’deyah. The ground of this house is surrounded by stones

that stand where its walls were. It shows that the house was made of one big room. This

house is the largest of all the houses in this village. All other houses were also likewise

demolished.

2. Some other rooms have their four walls still standing and have woods and stones as

their roofs. It is said that these stones and wood are the original ones of these houses.

3. There are other rooms without walls and delimitated by stones that show their original

size and location.

4. On some of these stones are written:

"هللا, محمد, حليمة السعدية"

”Allaahu, Muhammad, Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah.”

5. On other rooms is written: غرفة meaning ”room”.

6. The houses are not on the same level on top of the mountain, and some are placed

higher than others.

The valley

When you are in the house of Haleemah, the valley is below you and you see the valley

where the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam tended to the

sheep of Haleemah.

When you stand at the door of the house and you are facing the valley, on your left side is

the valley where his holy chest Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was

split opne by the two angels. On your right you see the present village of Al Ddahaaseen

on top of the mountain. Between the old and the new village there are about two

kilometers.

Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah /حليمة السعدية

Ibnu Ishaq (Translation of A. Guillaume) reported: ”On the authority of Ja’far ben Abee

Taaleb reported that Haleemah, the foster-mother of the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used to say that she went forth from her

country with her husband and little son, whom she was nursing, among the women of her

tribe, in search of other babies to nurse. This was a year of femine when they were

destitutes. She was riding a dusky she-donkey of hers with an old she-camel which did

not yield a drop of milk. They could not sleep the whole night because of the weeping of

her hungry child. She had no milk to give him, nor could their she-camel provide a

morning draught, ”but we were hoping for rain and relief.” ”I rode upon my donkey

which had kept back the other riders through its weakness and emaciation so that it was a

nuisance to them. When we reached Makkah, we looked out for foster children, and the

Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was offered to

everyone of us, and each woman refused him when she was told he was an orphan,

because we hoped to get payment from the child’s father.” We said: ”An orphan! And

what will his mother and grandfather do?”, and so we spurned him because of that. Every

woman who came with got a suckling except me, and when we decided to depart I said to

my husband: ”By Allaah, I do not like the idea of returning with my friends without a

suckling; I will get and take that orphan.” He replied: ”Do as you please; perhaps Allaah

will bless us on his account.” So I went and took him for the sole reason that I could not

find anyone else. I took him back to my bagguage, and as soon as I put him in my bosom,

my breasts overflowed with milk which he drank until he was satisfied, as also did his

foster-brother. Then both of them slept, whereas before this we could not sleep with him.

My husband got up and went to the old sha-camel and lo, her udders were full; he milked

it and he and I drank of her milk until we were compeletely satisfied, and we passed a

happy night. In the morning my husband said: ”Do you know, Haleemah, you have taken

a blessed creature?” I said: ”By Allaah, I hope so.” Then we set out and I was riding my

she-ass and carrying him with me, and she went at such a pace that the other donkeys

could not keep up so that my companions said to me: ”Counfound you! Stop and wait for

us. Isn’t this the donkey on which you started?” ”Certeainly it is” I said. They replied:

”By Allaah, something extraordinary has happened.” Then we came to our dwuellings in

the Banoo Sa’ad country and I do not know a country more barren than that.

When we had him with us my flock used to yield milk in abundance. We milked them

and drank while other people had not a drop, nor could they find anything in their

animals’s udders, so that our people were saying to their shepherds: ”Woe to you! Send

your flock to graze where the daughter of Aboo Thu-ayb’s shepherfs goes.” Even so,

their flocks came back hungry not yielding a drop of milk, while mine had milk in

abundance. We ceased not to recognize this bounty as coming from Allaah for a period of

two years, when I weaned him. (this why someone said:

( . لقد بلغت بألهاشمي حليمة/مقامل عال في ذروة العز والمجد1"

. وزادت مواشيها وأخصب ربعها/وقد عم هذا السعد كل بني سعد.2

The two verses mean:

Haleema achieved through the one of Banoo Haashem/A high position to the top of might

and greatness.

Her flock incresed and her village became fertile and productive/This hppened to all of

the tribe of Banoo Sa’ad.).

He was growing up as none of the other children grew and by the time he was two he

was a well made child. We brought him to his mother, though we were most anxious to

keep him with us because of the blessings which he brought us. I said to her: ”I should

like you to leave my little boy with me until he becomes a big boy, for I am afarid on his

account of the pest in Makkah.” We persisted until she sent him back with us.

Some months after our return he and his brother were with our lambs behind the tents

when his brother came running and said to us: ”Two men clothed in while have sized that

Qurayshe brother of mine and thrown him down and opened up his belly, and are stirring

it up.” We run towards him and found him standing up with a livid face. We took hold of

him and asked him what was the matter. He said:

فالتمسا شيئا ال أدري ما هو." ،، فأضجعاني وشقا بطني"جاءني رجالن عليهما ثياب بيض

”Two men in white raiment came and threw me down and opened up my belly and

searched therein for I know not what.”

So we took him back to our tent.

His father said to me: ”I am afraid that this child has had a stroke, so take him back to his

family before the result appears.” So we picked him up and took him to his mother who

said:

وعلى مكثه عندك؟" ،أقدمك به ظئر وقد كنت حريصة عليه"ما

”Why did you bring him back o woman, when you had been anxious for his welfare

and desirous of keeping him with you?”. I said to her: ”Allaah has let my son live so

far and I have done my duty. I am afraid that ill will befall him, so I have brought him

back to you as you wished.” She said:

فاصدقيني خبرك!" ،"ما هذا شأنك

“This is not what happened, tell me the truth.”

She asked me what happened and gave me no peace until I told her. She asked if I feared

a demon possessed him and said:

أفتخوفت عليه الشيطان؟ "“Were you afraid of the demon for him?”

I said: ”Yes.”

She said:

أنا."وإن لبني لش شيطان عليه من سبيل،وهللا ما لل "كال،

”No, demon had any power over her son who had a great future before him”. The

she said:

أضاء لي قصور بصرى من أرض الشام، ثم حملت به، رج مني نورخأنه "رأيت حين حملت به،

ولدته وإنه لواضع يديه با أل رض، ووقع حين من حمل قط كان أخف وال أيسر منه، فوهللا ما رأيت

دعيه عنك وإنطلقي راشدة." رافع رأسه إلى السماء،

The Hadeeth means:

”When I conceived him, I saw a light coming out of me that lit for me the castles of

Busraa in the land of Al Shaam, then I became pregnant with him. By Allaah I

never saw a lighter and easier pregnancy than his. When I delivered him he placed

his two hands on the earth and lifted his head to the sky. Leave him to me and go in

peace.”

His presence amongst them Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

was a blessing for all of Banoo Sa’ad

Haleemah said: ”When I brought him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam inside my house we smelled in all houses of Banoo Sa’ad the smell of Musk! It

was placed in the hearts of people his love to a degree that when one of them would

become sick he would take his hand Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa Sallam and place it on

the sick part of his body and immediately by the will of Allaah that person will be healed.

They would do the same if a camel or a sheep would get sick.”

Haleemah sings for him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

Ibnu Tarraah reported: ”Aboo ’Abdu Allaahe ben Mu’allaa Al Azdee Al Basreyye

reported in his book ”Al Tarqeesee”, as it was also reported by Al Mughlaatay, ibnu

Hajar Al ’Asqalaanee in his book ”Al Esaabah”, by Aboo Muthaffer Al Muqree in his

”Arba’eena” that Haleemah used to sing for him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa Sallam

when she made him play and say among others:

. يا رب إذ أعطيتني فأبقه/وأعله إلى األعلى وأرقه1

. وأحددأباطل العدا بحقه.2The two verses mean:

1. O Allaah if You have given him to us let him live/Raise him high and place him

higher.

2. And by his right humiliate and defeat those who transgress.

The songs of Al Shaymaa-u /الشيماء

Al Shaymaa-u was his foster sister and her name was Judaamatu or Huthaafatu or

Khethaamatu bentu Al Haareth ben ’Abdu Al ’Uzzaaa Al Ssa’deyah, and she raised him

Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam together with her mother Haleemah

and she was called also the mother of the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa

Aalehe Wa Sallam, and she used to sing for him too:

. هذا أخ لم تلده أمي/وليس من نسل أبي وعمي1"

. فديته من مخول معما/فأنمه اللهم فيما تنمي2

ا/حتى أراه يافعا وأمردا. يا ربنا أبق أخي محمد3

. ثم أراه سيدا مسودا/وأكبت أعاديه معا والحسدا4

. وأعطه عزا يدوم أبدا. 5These verses mean:

“1. This is my brother not born by my mother/And he is not of the children of my father

or my uncle.

2. His ransom came from uncles on mother’s side and uncles from the father’s side/O

Allaah make him grow strong and place him high.

3. O Allaah make my brother Muhammad lasting/until I see him grown up and highly

placed.

4. Lat me see him afterwards a chief, a leader that is obeyed and has followers/humiliate

and defeat his enemies and protect him from them and from the envious ones.

5. And give him might that is never defeated and make him everlasting.”

Al Azdee said: ”How beautiful it is how Allaah accepted her prayer for her brother Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and she witnessed all what she had asked

for.”

His first words Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa Sallam

Al Bayhaqee, and ibnu ’Asaaker reported from ibnu ’Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased

with them that he said: ”Haleemah used to say that when she weaned him, the Messenger

of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam talked and said:

"هللا أكبر كبيرا والحمد هلل كثيرا وسبحان هللا بكرة وأصيال."

The Hadeeth means:

“Allaah is Most Great, much praise is for Allaah and I declare the perfection of

Allaah in the early morning and in the late afternoon.”

The Hadeeth is reported also by ibnu Maajah.

It is also reported that he Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam after he

came out of the belly of his mother he spoke and said:

وإني رسول هللا." هللا، بكرة وأصيال. ال إله إال"هللا أكبر كبيرا والحمد هلل كثيرا وسبحان هللا

The Hadeeth means:

“Allaah is Most Great, much praise is for Allaah and I declare the perfection of

Allaah in the early morning and in the late afternoon. There is no god but Allaah

and I am the Messenger of Allaah.”

This was reported y Al Zarqaanee in the book “Shawaahedu Al Nubuwwate” who also

said: “The moment he came down and was born he raised up his head and then spoke in a

very clear language and said:

ال إله إال هللا, وإني رسول هللا." "

Which means:

“There is no god but Allaah and I am the Messenger of Allaah.”

He Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe a ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam also said:

"جالل ربي الرفيع."

Which means:

“My Lord is His Majesty the Most High.”

When he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was able to get out of

the house

When he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam became stronger and was

able to get out of the house he used to do so. Then he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa

Aalehe Wa Sallam would see the children playing, and his foster brother was playing

with them. He then Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam would take his

brother by the hand and would say to him:

"إنا لم نخلق لهذا!"

Which means:

”We were not created for this (to play)!”

The cloud

Ibnu Sa’ad, and Aboo Nu’aym and ibnu ’Asaaker reported from ibnu ’Abbaas that he

said: ”Haleemah would not allow him usually for him, Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’A;aa

Aalehe Wa Sallam, to go far away from her and she kept him close to her, for she was

always scared for him.

One day she was very busy and he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

went with his sister Al Shaymaa’u. It was non time when the sun is in the middle of the

sky and it was the hottest time of the day, and they went to where the sheep were in the

valley. When Haleemah became aware that he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam was not there in the room, she went out of the house looking for him and

found that he was togethere with his sister. Haleemah said to her daughter: ”Why did you

take him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to the heat of the day?”

She said: ”O mother, the sun did not touch my brother for I have seen a cloud protecting

him from the sun and whenever he stops it stops too and when he walks it moves to stay

over him. It was like that until we came to this point.”

The first two years

Prophet Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam grew very

quickly faster than the other children as reported by ibnu Ishaq.

Al Zarqaanee in his book Shawaahedu Al Nubawwate, and Al Deyaarbakree in his book

”Taareekhu Al Khameese” as well as others reported: ”When Prophet Muhammad Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was two months old was crowling to all

direction together with other children. When he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam reached three months was able to stand on his two feet. When he was four

months old he would put his hands on the house wall and walk. At five months of age he

Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam walked briskly. At seven months he

Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used to run to whatever direction he

wanted to. At eight months he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam used

to talk in a very clear language. At ten months he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa

Aalehe Wa Sallam used to shoot arrows as other kids were doing. Haleemah said: ”When

he reache the age of two years he became a strong and grown up boy.”

The third year

Al Qaadee Al Deyaarbakree reported in his book ”Taareekhu Al Khameese”

Haleemah said: ”When he Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

completed three years he told me one day:

ما لي ال أرى أخواني بألنهار؟" م، "يا أ

The Hadeeth means:

“O mother, how come I do not see my two brothers during the day?”

She said: “My son, they both shepherd our small flock of sheep in the place so and so.”

He Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said:

"فما لي ال أخرج معهم؟"

The Hadeeth means:

“Why don’t I go with them?”

She said: ”Do you like to go with them?” He Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam said: "نغم" which means: ”Yes!” Next morning I put cream on his body, put

a black line under his eyes Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and

hanged Yamane beeds around his neck to protect him. Concerning the beeds he Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam he said:

ا أمه! فإن معي من يحفظني!""مهال ي

The Hadeeth means:

”Slow down mother! I have someone that protects me with me.”

She said: ”Then I called my two sons and told them: ”I reccomand you to Muhammad: be

good to him and he should be always under your eyes.”

In this year Aboo Bakr Al Sseddeequ was born.

The fourth year

When he completed four years Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam his

chest was split open and the Seal of Prophet hood was placed on him.

When his belly was split open Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam and

the Seal of Prophet hood was put on him, while he was in the country of Haleemah,

Haleemah became scared and she said: ”When I brought him back into our house Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam the people said: ”Take him, Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam, to sorcerer to see what happened to him and to

heal him.”

By that the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa aalehe Wa Sallam said:

وفؤادي صحيحا بحمد هللا!" "ما بي شيء مما تذكرون، وإني أرى نفسي سالمة،

The Hadeeth means:

“There is nothing wrong with me of what you say, and I see my soul and my heart

healthy, thanks to Allaah.”

People said: “He is possessed by the devil or the devil that goes around in the night

entered him.”

She said: “They overwhelmed and overpowered me that I must go and take him to a

sorcerer against my will. I brought him to the sorcerer and narrated him what had

happened from the beginning to the end. The sorcerer said: “Let me hear it from the boy

himself because he knows what happened to him better than you do. O boy, talk!”

She said: “Then my son Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam narrated to him his story from the beginning to the end. The sorcerer jumped on

his feet embraced the boy and pressed him to his chest, and then he said in his loudest

voice: “O Arabs! Because of evil coming closer to you kill this boy, and kill me too

together with him, because if you don’t kill him and let him live when he reaches the age

of manhood he will offend your dreams for your future, he will change your religion and

he will call you to worship a Lord unknown to you and to a religion that you will hate.”

She said: “When I heard his words I snatched the boy from his arms and said to him:

“You are more foolish and more crazy than my son, and if I knew that you would do this

I would not have taken him to you. You look for someone to kill you because we will not

kill Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam.” Then I took him

with me and brought him into my house, Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam. On that specific day in all the house of Banee Sa’ad without any exception the

scent of musk was found and smelled. Every day two white birds used to come to him,

enter under the cloths he was wearing and disappear and would never come out.”

The fifth year

The book ”Taareekhu Al Khameese reported: ”Of the events of his fifth birthday Sallaa

Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam was that a future teller came to Makkah

while he was in the city for his foster mother Haleemah used to bring him Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to his grand father ’Abdu Al Muttaleb once a year.

This sorcerer said: ”O men of Quraysh, kill this boy, because he will divide you and he

will slay you.” ’Abdu Al Muttaleb took the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa

Aalehe Wa Sallam and run away with him. That is the reason why Quraysh was afarid of

his affaires as warned by the sorcerer.”

The splitting open of his chest Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

Haleemah said: ”By Allaah, two or three months after we returned together with him, he

and his brother were with our lambs behind our house when his brother came running and

said to us: ”Two men clothed in while have sized that Qurayshe brother of mine and

thrown him down and opened up his belly, and are stirring it up.” We run towards him

and found him standing up with a livid face. His father embraced him him and pressed

him to his chest and said: ”O my son! How are you?” He Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa

’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said:

فاضجعاني وشقا بطني. ثم إستخرجا منه شيء فطرحوه. ثم جاءني رجالن عليهما ثياب بيض،

رداه كما كان."

The Hadeeth means:

”Two men in white raiment came and threw me down and opened up my belly and

removed something they threw away. Then returned my belly the way it was

before.”

(The two men were Jebreel and Meekaa-eel and what they threw away was a small black

piece they removed from his belly) So we took him back to our tent.

His father said to me: ”I am afraid that this child has had a stroke, so take him back to his

family before the result appears.”

Haleemah Said: ”We moved towards Makkah and returned him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe

Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to his mother after loosing him at the gate of Makkah,

because I dismounted to go to the bathroom. I came in Makkah and reported to ’Abdu Al

Muttaleb that we have lost him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam.

Haleemah gets lost from him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

Haleemah said: ”When I told ’Abdu Al Muttaleb that I had lost him Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam, he circumambulated the Ka’bah seven times and

asked Allaah to return his son to him.” The ’Abdu Al Muttaleb heard someone say: ”Do

not worry for Muhammad has a Lord that will not loose him and will never forsake

him.”’Abdu Al Muttaaleb said to this one: ”O you who are talking: who will bring him

back to us? And where he is now?” He said: ”He is now in the valeey of Tehaamah.”

’Abdu Al Muttaleb got up sat on his mount and he was armed. After he was riding a

while he met with Waraqah ben Nawfal on the road and they went together searching for

him and found him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam sitting under a

tree.

Another narration reported: ”Aboo Mas’ood Al Thaqafee and ’Amr ben Nawfal while

riding on their camels saw him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

standing next to a banana tree and picking its leaves. ’Amr came to him and without

knowing him said: ”Who are you?” Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

replied:

"أنا محمد بن عبد المطلب بن هاشم."

Which means:

”I am Muhammad ben ’Abdu Al Muttaleb ben Haashem.”

They returned him to ’Abdu Al Muttaleb.

Ibnu ’Abbaas said: ”When Allaah returned to him Muhammad Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe

Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam he give in charity one thousand camels and fifty pounds of

gold. He also was very generous with Haleemah and gave her the best to be given.” This

was reported by ”Taareekhu Al Khameese.”

Then ’Abdu Al Muttaleb brought him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam to his mother Aamenah bentu Wahab, who said to Haleema and her husband:

”What is the reason you return him to me while you wanted very strongly to keep him

with you?” Haleemah said: ” I said: ”We were afraid that something might happen to him

or kill him or make him sick!” His mother said: ”And what is that? Tell me the truth why

you are returning him to me!” She repeayed this question until we told her about his

situation. When we told her about this matter (The two angels splitting his belly open)

she rejecting what we had said, said: ”Were you scared for him from Satan?” Haleemah

said: ”Yes.” Aamenah said: ”That will not happen, for by Allaah Satan has no power over

my son, and my son will have a great future.”

Aamenah said this for what she saw while pregnant with him and while delivering him

and she recounted this to Haleemah.

Aamenah said to Haleemah and her husband:

الشام، ثم حملت به،رج مني نور أضاء لي قصور بصرى من أرض خأنه "رأيت حين حملت به،

ولدته وإنه لواضع يديه با أل رض، ووقع حين من حمل قط كان أخف وال أيسر منه، فوهللا ما رأيت

دعيه عنك وإنطلقي راشدة." رافع رأسه إلى السماء،

The Hadeeth means:

”When I conceived him, I saw a light coming out of me that lit for me the castles of

Busraa in the land of Al Shaam, then I became pregnant with him. By Allaah I

never saw a lighter and easier pregnancy than his. When I delivered him he placed

his two hands on the earth and lifted his head to the sky. Leave him to me and go in

peace.”

The evil plan of the Christian Abyssinians

Ibnu Ishaq reported: ”A learned person told me that what urged his foster mother to

return him to his mother, apart from what she told his mother, was that a number of

Abyssinian Christians saw him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam with

her when she brought him back after he had been weaned. They looked at him, asked

questions about him, and studied him carefully, then they said to her: ”Let us take this

boy, and bring him to our king and our country; for he will have a great future. We know

all about him.” The person who told me this alleged that she could hardly get him away

from the.”

The narration of ibnu Sa’ad of his return Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam to his mother

Narrated ibnu Sa’ad: ”The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe

Wa Sallam stayed with Haleemah for two years, and when she weaned him she brought

him to his mother for her to see him. Haleemah narrated to his mother his conditions and

the blessings they saw coming from him. Aamenah said:

فوهللا ليكونن له شأن!" ي بابني فإني أخاف عليه وباء مكة،"ارجع

”Take my son with you for I am afraid for him from the diseases of Makkah, and by

Allaah my son will have a great future.”

Haleemah took him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam for the second

time to her village and he stayed with her for two more years. When he Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam reached the age of four years two angels came to

him and split his belly open –and ibnu Sa’ad narrated the story of the splitting of his belly

open from the beginning to the end-. Then Haleemah returned him Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe a ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to his mother Aamenah bentu Wahab and narrated to

her what had happened. Then she took him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam back to her village for the third time and he stayed with her for another year or

thereabouts and she never allowed him Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam to distance himself from the house except in her own company.

She saw a cloud shading him from the sun that when he moved it will move over him and

when he stops it stops over him. Haleemah was scared of this vision, then returned him

Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’ Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam to his mother when he completed

five years of age, as reported by ”Al Safwatu”.

Haleemah and Al Shaymaa’u at the division of the spoils of Hawaazen

After the victory over Makkah in the years 8 of Hejrah and after the attacks on Hawaazen

and on Al Taa-ef, the Messenger of Allaah, Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa

Sallam, stopped at the village of Je’raanah which is located twenty two kiloometers

south/west of the Ka’bah on the motorway to Al Taa-ef, to divide the spoils of Hawaazen

among the mujaahedeen. The translation is that of A. Guillaume.

Ibnu Ishaq says: ”When he left Al Taa-ef, the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu

’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam went by way of Dahnaa until he stopped at Al

Je’raanah with his men, having a large number of Hawaazen captives. One of his

companions Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam on the day he left

Thaqeef asked him to curse them but he said: ”

"اللهم أهد ثقيفا وأت بهم."

The Hadeeth means:

”O Allaah guide Thaqeef and bring them to Islam.”

Then a deputation from Hawaazen (The tribe of Haleemah and her husband) came to him

Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam in Al je’raanah where he held six

thousand women and children, and sheep and camels innumerable which had been

captured from them. ’Amr ben Shu’ayb from his father from his grandfather ’Abdu

Allaahe ben ’Amr said that the deputation from Hawaazen came to the Messenger of

Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam after they had accepted

Islam, saying that the disaster which had befallen them was well known and asked him to

have pity on them for Allaah’s sake. One of the Hawaazen of the clan of Banoo Sa’ad

ben Bakr (the clan of Haleemah Al Ssa’deyah) called Zuhayr Aboo Surad said: ”O

Messenger of Allaah, Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam, in the

enclosures are your paternal and maternal aunts and the women who suckled you who

used to look after you. Had we acted as fosterparents for Al Haareth ben Aboo Shemr

(The king of Al Shaam at that time) and Al Nu’maanu ben Al Munther (The king of Al

Heerah in ’Iraaq at that time) and then got into the position in which you hold us we

could hope for his kindness and favour, and you are the best of trustworthy men.” Then

he said:

Have pity on us, Messenger of Allaah, generously,

For you are the man from whom we hope and expext pity.

Have pity on a people whom fate has frustrated,

Their well being shattered by time’s misfortunes.

’The Messenger Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’laa Aalehe Wa Sallam said:

نساؤكم أحب إليكم أم أموالكم؟""أبناؤكم و

“Which are dearest to you? Your sons and your wives or your cattle?”

They replied: “Do you give us the choice between our cattle and our honor? No, give us

back our wives and our sons, for that is what we most desire.”

The Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe a ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam said:

فقوموا فقولوا: "إنا كان لي ولبني عبد المطلب فهو لكم، وإذا ما أنا صليت الظهر بالناس،"أما ما

ه وسلم وبالمسلمين إلى رسول هللا صلى هللا عليه وعلى آل نستشفع برسول هللا إلى المسلمين،

وأسأل لكم." تسليما كثيرا في أبنائنا ونسائنا، فسأعطيكم عند ذلك،

The Hadeeth means:

”So far as concerns what I and the Banoo ’Abdu Al Muttaleb have they are yours.

When I have prayed the noon prayer with the men then get up and say: ”We ask the

Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam’s

intercession with the Muslims, and the Muslim’s intercession with the Messenger of

Allaah Sallaa Allaahu ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam for our sons and our

wives.” I will then give them to you and make application on your behalf.”

When the Messenger of Allaah Sallaa Allaaju ’Alayhe Wa ’Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam had

ended the noon prayers they did as he had ordered them, and he said:

"أما ما كان لي ولبني عبد المطلب فهو لكم."

”So far as concerns what I and the Banoo ’Abdu Al Muttaleb have they are yours.”

Then the Muhaajereen said that what was theirs was the Messenger’s, and the Ansaar

said the same.”

Haleemah and her daughter Al Shaymaa’u came to the Messenger of Allaah in Al

Je’raanah and he Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam honored them and

gave to them generously.

Haleemah later came to the Prophet Sallaa Allaahu ‘Alayhe Wa ‘Alaa Aalehe Wa Sallam

in Al Madeenah Al Munawwarah and died there. She is buried in the Al Baqee’

graveyard, may Allaah have mercy on her.
