Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974
• The Act imposes general duties on employers to secure the health, safety and welfare of people at work, and protect others against risks arising from the work activity.

Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974
• Section 2(1) of the Act makes it the duty of every employer to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees.
• This includes:• provision & maintenance of plant and systems of
work that are safe and without risks• Information, instruction and training

• Section 3(1) of the Act makes it the duty of every employer to conduct their undertaking in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons not in his employment who may be affected thereby are not exposed to risks to their health or safety

Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 (M.H.S.W.)
• These regulations set out broad general duties aimed at improving health and safety management
• The regulations cover• risk assessment• health and safety arrangements• health surveillance• procedures for serious and imminent danger• capabilities and training

Duties of Employees
• To take reasonable care of the health and safety of him/herself and of others who may be affected by his or her actions or omissions at work
• To co-operate with the employer

Duties of Employees
• IN ADDITION (M.H.S.W.)
• They must use any machinery, dangerous substances and safety devices in accordance with any instructions and training
• They must inform their employer of any serious or imminent danger to health and safety

Duty of Everyone
• It is an offence for anyone to intentionally or recklessly interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health and safety

Duties of All Members of Imperial College
• It is incumbent on all members of the College and visitors to the College to recognise their own individual responsibility to be aware of, and to comply with, all health and safety requirements relevant to their activities

Specific Requirements for Employees and Students in the Department of Chemical Engineering
• Attend appropriate Safety Events• Read the College’s Health & Safety Policy
Statement, and the Departmental safety Policy
• Report all accidents and dangerous occurrences
• Ensure that all experimental work is registered and that appropriate risk assessments have been carried out
