State 4-H Management Board Update

The State 4-H Management Board will be implemented July 1, 2016 and is designed to organize 4-H to best meet

the growing and changing needs of the 4-H members, 4-H adult volunteers and supporters to better position the

program for growth so that it thrives into and beyond the next 100 years. For more information on the State 4-H

Management Board, read last month’s Associate Director Update in the UC ANR 4-H Newsletter (December 2015) or

visit the Future of 4-H Starts Today webpage. As a next step in the process, an Implementation Team of youth

members and adult volunteers has been formed and is ready to help support a positive transition. The Team is

being chaired by Cole Breck, former 4-H State Ambassador and current 4-H Adult Volunteer! If you have questions,

Celebrating You, Our Dedicated 4-H Family

Dear 4-H Friend,

In the spirit of celebration that the new year brings, we are celebrating you, our dedicated volunteers and 4-H families! You are what makes 4-H so special and so effective through your investment of time, your ability to build relationships with the youth in your community, and your financial support of 4-H at the local and statewide level.

One recent example of how our 4-H family came together to show the world that kids matter was our #4HGivingConfidence campaign this past December 1, #GivingTuesday. This was the first time the California 4-H Foundation has participated in this global day of giving. Together we exceeded our goal and raised $13,780, including more than $6,000 in matching gifts from the California 4-H Foundation and Foundation Board. We had donations from donors in 16 counties across California (and a few other states!) and we raised awareness about 4-H through an engaging social media campaign that many of you participated in. Thank you!

Your support of 4-H is inspirational. By investing in our youth, you are providing the hope for tomorrow.

4-H Foundation Updates

Bring a Board Member to Your Event

Members from the California 4-H Foundation Board of Directors would love to attend a 4-H event in your community. Our Board members are ambassadors for UC ANR 4-H YDP and would welcome the opportunity to see firsthand the impact of 4-H and talk with students, volunteers and supporters of 4-H in your area. Ideas for the types of events they could attend are awards celebrations, regional events, and fundraisers. Please contact Tammie Erhard at [email protected] with the event name, date and time, and the best contact person. The Foundation will prepare a calendar of potential activities for the Board to consider. While they may not be able to attend every event opportunity, we all look forward to hearing what activities and events in your community.

Text, Talk, Act was a great success! Thank you to everyone who participated!

There were over 75 individual phones registered using our code, with an estimated 300 people who participated on November 10th. We were very pleased to help further the conversation on mental health in young people.

In December the State Ambassadors were able to support the efforts of the California 4-H Foundation on Giving Tuesday. Using our social media platform they posted #unselfies and short videos on how their confidence has grown through 4-H. Thank you to all that supported California 4-H on giving Tuesday.

The State Ambassadors are excited to announce that their workshop on Stress Management was accepted at the National Youth Summit on Healthy Living. Two State Ambassadors will be traveling to Washington D.C to facilitate their session February 12-15, 2016.

State Ambassador is the highest working honor awarded in California 4-H, and we will continue to represent 4-H statewide to better inform the public about the 4-H program. Applications for the 2016-2017 California State 4-H Ambassadors are now open!

Healthy Living

National Youth Summit on Healthy Living – February 12-15, 2016

National 4-H Council and National 4-H Youth Conference Center have partnered with professionals in family consumer science and healthy living to host the National Youth Summit on Healthy Living. Youth attending this summit will gain knowledge and skills to address issues surrounding nutrition, physical fitness, and emotional well-being. This opportunity is available for high school students who are passionate about healthy living and improving community health. Youth can participate individually or as a team with at least one adult mentor/chaperone. There should be at least one chaperone for every eight youth participants.

For more information and registration: http://www.nationalyouthsummit.org/healthy-living-conference/

Color Me Green 5K Runs

Consider hosting a Color Me Green 5K Run this March 2016!

The Color Me Green 5K Run will provide your county or club with a statewide service learning opportunity specific to the improvement of health. With the support of adult volunteers, youth will organize and execute a 5K run in their community. It is our hope that through participation in the Color Me Green 5K Runs, both individuals and communities will aspire to increase their health habits. Be a health advocate for your community and host a Color Me Green 5K Run!

How can I host a Color Me Green 5K?

1. Talk with your County Office to find out if a Run is already being planned.

2. Each County Officer will sign-up with Anne Iaccopucci at County Host Registration https://ucanr.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=14385

3. Identify an adult volunteer or staff member to partner with.

Additional information can be found here: http://4h.ucanr.edu/Projects/HealthyLiving/Color_Me_Green_5K_Run/

4-H MILITARY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

Thinking about an internship?

The Military Extension Internship Program will be accepting applications for Summer 2016 interns in December and

January. Fall 2016 applications will be accepted in February and March 2016. Internships are on active military

Installations across the U.S. and around the world with military child and youth programs. Interns have the

opportunity to develop skills managing child and youth facilities while also providing direct care to children and

youth. Please visit https://ag.purdue.edu/extension/militaryinternships for more information.

Young children with active-duty parents

More than 700,000 U.S. children under age six have or had an active-duty parent, and

some have had two. Young children may be especially affected by a parent's deployment,

because of their emotional dependence on adults and susceptibility to high levels of

stress. Read more about these children and how to support them in an article in Healing

Magazine by Child Trends' David Murphey.

Research The Art of Restraint: How Experienced Program Leaders Use Their Authority to Support Youth Agency in Journal of Research on Adolescence. The article by Reed Larson, Dina Izenstark, Gabriel Rodriguez, and Cole Perry describe the delicate balancing act between supporting youth agency and exercising necessary authority. They found that adults used authority to give advice and set limits, but did so with reasoned restraint. Maximizing youth’s opportunities to learn from experience was central in their decision making. Click here for full article.
