Project leader, coordination and guidance The preparation of the State of Europe's Forests 2011 report was coordinated and led by Roman Michalak, at the ECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section in Geneva. The process was guided by an Advisory Group to the FOREST EUROPE/UNECE/FAO, consisting of Simon Gillam, Mette Løyche Wilkie, Alexander Korotkov, Michael Köhl, Piotr Paschalis-Jakubowicz, Kit Prins, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Jesús San-Miguel-Ayanz. The UNECE/ FAO Team of Specialists on “Monitoring SFM” led by Ewald Rametsteiner and Simon Gillam, guided the work, advised on methods and supported the review process for both data and drafting. Enquiries The work on preparation of enquiries on quantitative and qualitative indicators was led by Roman Michalak, Eve Charles, Franziska Hirsch and Marion Briens supported by thematic experts. We would like to highlight the support from Simon Gillam, Berit Hauger Lindstad, Alexander Korotkov, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Stein Tomter in the finalisa- tion of terms, classifications and definitions for these reporting. Örjan Jonsson (FAO Rome) provided significant input, also by developing the electronic format for quantitative data reporting and review. Data pre-filling, collection and International Data Providers (IDP) Data in response to the enquiry on quantitative indicators were supplied by the FAO FRA national correspondents, whose names are presented in Annex 5. The correspondents to the FOREST EUROPE process who supplied the information on qualitative indicators; are presented in Annex 6. We would like to thank all of the correspondents for their exemplary work, dedication and patience in providing and reviewing thousands of pieces of information that laid the basis for the report.     The responses on the qualitative indicators were collected, reviewed and compiled jointly

    by UNECE/FAO and European Forest Institute (EFI) by Marion Briens and Tania Baycheva,

    supported by David Ellul.

    Writing and review of the report The report was drafted by the team of authors. This work was coordinated by Michael

    Köhl, Jesús San-Miguel-Ayanz, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Kit Prins.

    A large number of authors worked together with national respondents to transform an

    immense data set into a coherent and meaningful analytical report. The thorough review

    was completed by the team of reviewers, which was composed of Andrey Filipchuk,

    Mette Løyche Wilkie, Andy Moffat, Jan Oldenburger, Hans Verkerk, Gerhard Weiss,

    Christoph Wildburger and Andreas Zingg. The list of authors, reviewers and editors is

    presented in Annex 7.

    European Forest TypesThe report includes results of pilot implementation of European Forest Types; we would

    like to recognise the contribution of the authors of the classification of forest types,

    notably Marco Marchetti and Anna Barbati. We are grateful to national correspondents,

    national forest inventory experts, in particular to Claude Vidal, for their magnificent

    cooperation in providing data and developing the classification. The participation of

    Tor Björn Larsson, Stein Tomter and the support received from Josef Herkendell and

    European Environment Agency were vital for successful completion of the process.

    Finalization and layoutArnaud Brizay, Eve Charles, Remi d’Annunzio, Matt Fonseca, Kristin Dawes, Berit Hauger

    Lindstad and Roman Michalak did exemplary work on compilation and finalization of the

    whole report. Douglas Clark and Karen Sturges-Vera provided a major contribution to the

    report as language editors. The report was designed by Tank, Oslo. Administrative support

    to the whole process was provided by Karen Taylor.
