This report is the result of work of numerous specialists from countries and international
organisations, whose contribution is briefly described and acknowledged below. However,
we wish to express our particular thanks to hundreds of forest inventory and policy experts
involved in data collection. It is impossible to mention them here by name, but this report
would not have been possible without their hard work over many years.
Project leader, coordination and guidanceThe preparation of the State of Europe's Forests 2011 report was coordinated and led by
Roman Michalak, at the ECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section in Geneva. The process was
guided by an Advisory Group to the FOREST EUROPE/UNECE/FAO, consisting of Simon
Gillam, Mette Løyche Wilkie, Alexander Korotkov, Michael Köhl, Piotr Paschalis-Jakubowicz,
Kit Prins, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Jesús San-Miguel-Ayanz. The UNECE/
FAO Team of Specialists on “Monitoring SFM” led by Ewald Rametsteiner and Simon Gillam,
guided the work, advised on methods and supported the review process for both data and
drafting.
EnquiriesThe work on preparation of enquiries on quantitative and qualitative indicators was led by
Roman Michalak, Eve Charles, Franziska Hirsch and Marion Briens supported by thematic
experts. We would like to highlight the support from Simon Gillam, Berit Hauger Lindstad,
Alexander Korotkov, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Stein Tomter in the finalisa-
tion of terms, classifications and definitions for these reporting. Örjan Jonsson (FAO Rome)
provided significant input, also by developing the electronic format for quantitative data
reporting and review.
Data pre-filling, collection and International Data Providers (IDP)Data in response to the enquiry on quantitative indicators were supplied by the FAO FRA
national correspondents, whose names are presented in Annex 5. The correspondents to
the FOREST EUROPE process who supplied the information on qualitative indicators; are
presented in Annex 6. We would like to thank all of the correspondents for their exemplary
work, dedication and patience in providing and reviewing thousands of pieces of information
that laid the basis for the report.
For certain indicators, information was also supplied by international organisations.
We are indebted to all of them, in particular to Michael Köhl and Richard Fischer from the
International Cooperative Programme on Forests under the ECE Convention on Long-Range
Transboundary Air Pollution (ICP Forest), Jesús San-Miguel-Ayanz and Christine Estreguil
from the European Commission Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Jarkko Koskela from the
International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (Bioversity International) and Marilise Wolf-
Crowther and Csaba Mózes from the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat) for
facilitating the provision of this information. Communication and the verification process
of data gathered from international providers was led by the UNECE/FAO team, together with
Stein Tomter.
Data review, compilation and analysisThe teams of experts worked closely together to collect and review the data on the quantitative
indicators. Reports on quantitative indicators were reviewed by a team consisting of Karl
Duvemo, Matti Katila, Alexander Korotkov, Roman Michalak and Stein Tomter. Compilation
of collected data was done by Örjan Jonsson (FAO Rome) with support of Eve Charles, Alex
McCusker, Felix Seidel and Elisa Asmelash (UNECE/FAO Geneva).

by UNECE/FAO and European Forest Institute (EFI) by Marion Briens and Tania Baycheva,
supported by David Ellul.
Writing and review of the report The report was drafted by the team of authors. This work was coordinated by Michael
Köhl, Jesús San-Miguel-Ayanz, Ewald Rametsteiner, Aljoscha Requardt and Kit Prins.
A large number of authors worked together with national respondents to transform an
immense data set into a coherent and meaningful analytical report. The thorough review
was completed by the team of reviewers, which was composed of Andrey Filipchuk,
Mette Løyche Wilkie, Andy Moffat, Jan Oldenburger, Hans Verkerk, Gerhard Weiss,
Christoph Wildburger and Andreas Zingg. The list of authors, reviewers and editors is
presented in Annex 7.
European Forest TypesThe report includes results of pilot implementation of European Forest Types; we would
like to recognise the contribution of the authors of the classification of forest types,
notably Marco Marchetti and Anna Barbati. We are grateful to national correspondents,
national forest inventory experts, in particular to Claude Vidal, for their magnificent
cooperation in providing data and developing the classification. The participation of
Tor Björn Larsson, Stein Tomter and the support received from Josef Herkendell and
European Environment Agency were vital for successful completion of the process.
Finalization and layoutArnaud Brizay, Eve Charles, Remi d’Annunzio, Matt Fonseca, Kristin Dawes, Berit Hauger
Lindstad and Roman Michalak did exemplary work on compilation and finalization of the
whole report. Douglas Clark and Karen Sturges-Vera provided a major contribution to the
report as language editors. The report was designed by Tank, Oslo. Administrative support
to the whole process was provided by Karen Taylor.
Special thanksExtraordinary financial support was provided by the Governments of Finland,
Norway and Switzerland. In addition, we would like to acknowledge the support of the
Government of France which made possible the contributions of Marion Briens, and
Arnaud Brizay. The European Forest Institute made substantial contributions to the
report. The Government of the United Kingdom provided the services of Simon Gillam,
Karl Duvemo was delegated by the Swedish Forestry Agency and Matti Katila was sup-
ported by the Finnish Forest Research Institute. We are grateful to national respondents,
experts and authors for dedicating their time and their Governments and organisations
for supporting their involvement.
Our sincere thanks go to Roman Michalak, UNECE/FAO Geneva and to Berit Hauger
Lindstad, FOREST EUROPE Liaison Unit Oslo, for successful coordination of the preparation
of the report. We also wish to thank Eve Charles, Simon Gillam, Alexander Korotkov, Kit
Prins and Stein Tomter for their continuous, conscientious and effective work through
the whole period of preparation of this report. Their personal involvement and dedication
were a precondition for completing the report in expected time and shape.
Finally, special thanks should be addressed to the team from FAO Rome, led by
Mette Løyche Wilkie with Örjan Jonsson, Arvydas Lebedys, Adrian Whiteman and Remi
d'Annunzio for outstanding cooperation, assisting the process, providing support and
