Pasteurella multocida

Gram-negative, non-motile Coccobacilli

Aerobic and facultatively AnO2A parasite of domestic and wild

animalsMay infect man >> after dog biteDo not grow on MacConkey agar

Pathogenesis

A local abscess at the site of dog or cat bite, with cellulitis, adenitis and osteomyelitis (sometimes)

Meningitis following head injuryInfection of the respiratory system

>> penumonia, bronchitis etc…

Laboratory Diagnosis

Specimen– Swabs from bite wounds– CSF from cases of meningitis– Secretions from suppurative respiratory tract

infections

Culture– Blood agar

Identification– Cultural and Biochemical tests

Treatment

Penicillin, Tetracycline, Erythromycin, TMP-SMZ

Osteomyelitis following dog or cat bite >> 8 weeks treatment
