GUIDELINES The stringing tables are provided as a “ready reckoner “ reference. All table values are in metres. For most designs it is recommended appropriate software is used. As an approximate “rule of thumb”, conductors of the same type/class experience similar sag due to temperature (eg. the sag due to temperature for AAC Mars and AAC Moon is approximately the same. Accordingly sag tables are presented at different tensions for a type/class of conductor (eg. AAC Moon). Sag values for other AAC (eg. Mars, Libra) conductors may be assumed to be similar.

RESTRICTIONS FOR STRING TABLE T880

Covered conductor (LVABC, CCT, HVABC) No restrictions.

Open Wire conductor

Rural - Not to be used in rural areas on any length span at any time

(Definition of Rural is those areas with acreage plots) Urban

T880 is to be used only as a last resort, were it is not possible to use T660 (or higher) stringing table.

If T880 is to be used, limitations to reduce conductor clashing are - - It can only be used on spans less than 30 metres. - Short/metro (2.1m) crossarms can only be used where the deviation angle is less than 3 degrees. (2.7m crossarms are preferred)

- Minimum 2.7m crossarms required for deviation angles equal or greater than 3 degrees - Were an angle exists, it is preferable to use 2 termination arms rather than a single crossarm. A second crossarm is essential for heavy angle turns. - Conductor spreaders can be considered for spans between 30 and 50 metres where re-tensioning is not practical or economical during maintenance works (eg condemned pole replacements)

EXAMPLES 1. Determine sag in a 95m span of MARS strung at Table 440 at

30C, given a strain section MES of 84m.

MARS is an all aluminium conductor, so select the stringing table for AAC at T440. The MES of 84m is best approximated by the 80m MES in the table. Therefore look in the 30C column under the 80m MES. The span length of 95m is midway between 90m and 100m. Looking at the row for 90m, the sag is 3.74m; for 100m it is 4.62m. Therefore we shall take the sag for a 95m span to be midway between these two values, namely 4.16m.

2. A section of new line is to be erected. The conductor to be used

is APPLE, strung at Table 110. The MES of the strain section is 161m, with the longest span being 180m. On the works plan you are required to show the sag in this span at both 15C and 30C for the benefit of the construction crew.

APPLE is an ACSR conductor, so we select the stringing tables for AAC/ACSR. Since the MES is 161m, we will need to use the table for 110M,L (medium and long spans) rather than 110S (short spans). The MES of 161m is best approximated by the 150m MES in the table. Normally we would look in the 15C and 30C columns and the 180m row. However, since this is tightly strung new conductor, it is necessary to allow for inelastic stretch. Therefore, we take values from the 10C and 25C columns. Thus we nominate sags of 3.35m and 3.97m on the works plan.

In time, as the conductor stretches, the sag will increase slightly to the required value.

ENGINEERING BACKGROUND Stringing Tables and Sag Each stringing table corresponds to a defined sag for a 100m span. For example, conductors strung at Table T220 will have a mid-span sag of 220cm (2.20m over a 100m span) at a temperature of 15C. Similarly T660 means 660cm sag in a 100m span. This holds true regardless of the size or type of conductor. More importantly, each stringing table represents a fixed stringing tension for each conductor type, regardless of span length. The basic relationship between sag and span length, for a level span, is as follows:

S = mgLs2

8 T

where: S = maximum sag in conductor span (m) m = unit mass of conductor (kg/m) g = gravitational acceleration constant (9.81 m/s2) Ls = length of span (m) T = conductor tension (N)

So for a constant tension, sag varies with the square of the span length. For example, the sag in a 50m span of conductor strung at T220 is only 0.55m, ie one quarter (not one half) of the sag at 100m. For a known sag and span length, Stringing Table (ST) may be calculated as follows: ST = 1,000,000 . S / Ls

2

A correction needs to be applied to this rule if the temperature is other than 15C. This also assumes that the conductor is fixed rigidly at either end of the span, such that the span acts independently of any other segment of the line.

Stringing Tables and Tension Each stringing table represents a defined stringing tension for a conductor. For example, for MOON strung at T220, this corresponds to a tension of 1.9kN (no wind, 15C), or 10% of the calculated minimum breaking load (CBL) or ultimate tensile strength (UTS) for MOON. For MARS strung at T220, this corresponds to 1.18kN tension, which is also 10%CBL for MARS, another all aluminium (AAC) conductor. Likewise PLUTO at T220 is at 10%CBL, being of the same material. However, for 7/.104 copper conductor, T220 corresponds to 12%CBL. The result is different because the material is different. The table below shows the approximate relationship between stringing table and %CBL for various conductor types. Note that there are small differences between conductors of the same basic material. Differences increase for composite conductors, eg ACSR according to the steel/aluminium ratio, and also for insulated conductors.

%CBL (typical)

BBCC BBCC is NOT strung according to ENERGEX stringing tables or a constant tension. These cables are strung with sag set to a fixed percentage of span length, normally 2%, although many are much tighter than this in practice. For example, a 40m span would be expected to have a sag of 0.8m.

Consequently, even for an in-line pole, if span lengths of the BBCC on either side of the pole differ significantly, then there will be a resultant force on the pole. Stringing Tables and Temperature As temperature increases, sag increases and conductor tension decreases, according to a complex relationship dependant on the thermal expansion of the material and other physical properties. For more details, refer to AS/NZS 7000:2010 Appendix S. ENERGEX use a standard temperature of 15C. This is approximately equivalent to the mean of winter season temperatures. Stringing Tables and MES Another factor affecting sag in a given span is the Mean Equivalent Span (MES), or ‘Ruling Span’. Where a conductor is fixed rigidly at either end of a span, such that the span acts independently of any other segment of the line, the MES is simply the span length. However, where conductor is installed on movable supports, such as suspension insulators, or when it is being strung on rollers prior to fixing in place, the various spans within the strain section interact. The individual spans do not behave independently; the large spans dominate. (This is one reason why it is good design practice to keep all spans within a strain section of similar length.) Consider the following strain section, comprised of one short span and one long span.

If the two spans were independent, as temperature decreases, the tension would increase in both spans, but more so in the short span than in the long one. For the case where the conductor can move at the centre support, tension in the two spans will equalize. The suspension insulator at Pole 2 will swing to the left. Span 1 will not be as tight as it would otherwise have been, while Span 2 will be tighter than if it were independent. Spans less than the MES tend to sag more than predicted as temperature rises above the stringing temperature. Conversely, spans longer than the MES tend to sag less than predicted as temperature increases. MES is a theoretical span that models overall behaviour of spans within a strain section. MES may be calculated as follows:

MES = L13 + L2

3 + L33 +….

L1 + L2 + L3 +…. where L1, L2, L3, … are the lengths of the spans in the strain section. For example, let us say that the lengths of the two spans above are as follows: Span 1: 30m Span 2: 100m MES would be: MES = 30 3 + 100 3 = 88.8m 30 + 100 Notice that the large span has a disproportionate influence on the MES. For very steep slopes a slightly different formula for MES is recommended in AS/NZS 7000:2010 Appendix S. Allowance for Inelastic Stretch For tightly strung conductors, it is necessary to make allowance for inelastic stretch, or creep, of the conductor. This is a slight stretching of the conductor that occurs after installation.

Therefore conductors are installed slightly tighter than normal, ie with reduced sag. For AAC or ACSR conductors, this applies to stringing tables of T220 and above; for copper conductors T110 and above. Allowance is made by specifying sags corresponding to temperatures 5C lower than would otherwise be used. For example, typically a works plan specifies sag in a span of mains at 15C and 30C for construction crews. For tight strung mains the actual values shown will be those corresponding to 10C and 25C respectively to allow for inelastic stretch. Stringing Table Ranges The tables provided cover a wide range of span lengths. Great care should be exercised if using the stringing tables beyond these ranges. For longer spans, sag can be excessive. For shorter spans, tensions can become massive under cold conditions, causing conductors to fracture or support structures to be damaged. Blowout Blowout may be considered to be ‘horizontal sag’ which a conductor experiences under wind conditions. It is an important consideration when checking horizontal clearances from structures and embankments, as well as determining easement width.
