As we know, any leadership role holds both privilege and responsibilit}' - a balance I experienced deeply during my time heading up CentaCare in the Diocese of Wilcannia-Forbes. In this mo\ from the outback to the city, 1 find myself straddling two \'astly different worlds, and hope in some -way I can now support the building of mutually enriching bridges between city and country. While there is a level of relief in escaping the awful mouse plague in western NSW, I am surprised to meet a challenge of a different kind witli the possums of Hawthorn! I hope you enjoy meeting the new leadership team in this edition, and for those in Me that the lure of the MWIA event at the National Gallery of Victoria on the 18 Septemb^ too great to resist! In this, my first introduct ion to our Loreto Net^vorker newsletter, I would like to thank the many who have sent words of welcome and support over the last few \veeks. Land ing D a y 19 July 1875

On the 19th July 1875, M a i y Gonzaga Barr}', along w i t h nine companions from Ireland, arrived i n Australia, sailing i n on SS Somersetshire and embarking at Sandridge Pier, Port Melbourne. This day, known as Landing Day, marks the beginning of the I B V M i n Australia.

I n response to an appeal by the Bishop of Ballarat, Dr O'Connor, Mother Gonzaga w-as asked to lead a mission to AustraHa to begin a Loreto school i n Ballarat

Loreto's Province Archives was represented at the annual Shamrock i n the Bush conference (7-10 July) by Province Archi\ ' ist , Robin Scott.

Robin gave a paper entitled "Our Dear Old I r i sh Home - Loreto's I r i sh Roots" where she talked about Loreto's origins i n Ireland, the background and circumstances of the founding nuns and the Ir ish-Austral ian blended influences on the foundations.

I r i sh items f rom our archival collection were featured - such as Belleek china (pictured).

Events at Portland On Saturday 23 July Ba>'view College welcomed over 300 people for the blessing and opening of its new facilities. Guests were welcomed by M r J i m Goodall, Principal of Bayview College and Cr Ken Saunders provided a Welcome to Country-. The special guest speaker was Rev J i m Connelly, first lay pr incipal of Christian Communit\ College from 1977-1981.

The Loreto Sisters opened a school on the Bayview site in 1885. In igyjthe school became a Christian Community College. Loreto continues to actively support Bayview College and Den Desmarchelier ibvm is chair of the school council.
