GlossaryAutotest – an automated sequence of measurements and calculations executed by a test instrument
Bi-directional test – testing a single fiber in two opposite directions
Fiber test adapter – a fiber test instrument that attaches to the twisted pair interface of a copper test mainframe, also called a “fiber nose”
Fiber module – a fiber test instrument that attaches to a copper test mainframe via a dedicated connector, the fiber module does not interfere with copper testing but co-exists in a dedicated module cavity
DTX kit – a bundle consisting of a DTX-1800 or DTX-1200 CableAnalyzer and at least one DTX Fiber Module
Multimode fiber – a relatively large core (50µm or 62.5µm) optical fiber used predominantly in LANs, most frequently used to transmit wavelengths in the 850nm and/or 1300nm windows
OLTK – optical loss test kit consisting of an optical source(s) and an optical power meter
OLTS – optical loss test set, source(s) and meter incorporated into a single case
OTDR – optical time domain reflectometer
Polarity – orientation of Tx and Rx fibers
Singlemode fiber – a very low-loss, high-bandwidth 9µm core optical fiber used in WANs and LANs (mostly backbones), most frequently used to transmit wavelengths in the 1310nm and/or 1550nm windows
TSB140 - TIA authored Telecommunications Systems Bulletin (TSB) titled “Additional Guidelines for Field-Testing Length, Loss and Polarity of Optical Fiber Cabling Systems.”
Tier 1 certification – Per TSB140, Tier 1 testing is required of all fiber optic cabling links. The Tier 1 tests are attenuation (insertion loss), length and polarity.
Tier 2 certification – Per TSB140, Tier 2 testing is optional but important. Tier 2 testing supplements Tier 1 testing with the addition of an OTDR trace of each fiber link. An OTDR trace does not replace the insertion loss measurement with an OLTK, but is used for complementary evaluation of the fiber link.
