Stock• The goods or merchandise

Dividends–A sum of money paid regularly

(typically quarterly) by a company to its shareholders out of its profits (or reserves).–A payment divided among a number

of people, e.g., members of a cooperative or creditors of an insolvent estate.

capital gain•A profit from the sale of property or of an investment.

– Shares entitling their holder to dividends that vary in amount and may even be missed, depending on the fortunes of the company.

Blue chip stock•blue chip: a common stock

of a nationally known company whose value and dividends are reliable; typically have high price and low yield.

Dow Jones• an indicator of stock

market prices; based on the share values of 30 blue-chip stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
