ST. MARY CATHEDRAL LANSING, MICHIGAN
TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “How would you describe me to someone else?” or “What do you think of me?” These are kind of like the questions Jesus puts to his followers in today’s Gospel. The answers can come from different levels of the rela-tionship. We could hide behind the kinds of things you might acknowledge on a resume, more superficial, or you could dive down below the surface and get a little more per-sonal – though it could still sound superficial: nice, good looking, strong. Perhaps a deeper description might sound more relational: friend, hero. Today Jesus leads his disciples away from the madding crowd to talk with them, to ask them questions. What they say of him in response probably does more to describe who they are as they continue to follow Jesus’ lead. I’ve said it before and I’ll repeat it here: how WE answer the direct question Jesus put to them, “Who do you say that I am?” is one of the most important answers we are asked to give in our faith-life. As with the disciples, it says more about us and our faith, our relationship with the Lord, than who the Lord is fully. The more we stay at the superficial level, the more distant we keep the Lord. The more personal and relational our description, the closer we are to the Lord, and the more aware we are of the vocation as baptized believers.
PAROCHIAL ADMINISTRATOR I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, (family: Ber-nie, Red, doofus, knucklehead, honiock; friends: Bernie, Padre, Father, Monsignor, “Mons,”) but it’s taken me over 44 years as a priest to be called a “parochial administrator.” That’s the proper appointment title given to someone who “covers” for a priest who is away from the parish for a longer period of time, like a sabbatical. It is indeed good to see you all again and I will try to not mess up any and everything Fr. Karl has been intent on fos-tering and promoting since his arrival. I am staying at the rectory, 219, Tuesdays through Sun-days, with overnights Sundays and Mondays at the house in DeWitt.
WITNESS TO HOPE RESPONSE Thank you to all who made commitments to the Diocesan-wide Capitol Campaign and are now making your monthly, quarterly or annual payments. We have received two payment-shares from the Diocese, our 35% parish-share (just over $50,000.00) of what you have paid in. I recently made contact with a renovation company who specializes in plaster work, to assess the repairs that need to be done in the “devotional” alcoves on the north and south sides of the church. I will keep you informed about that progress and try to let you know in advance when actual work will be scheduled.
Something NOT on the Witness to Hope roster, but in need of getting done, is the completion of the replacement and repair of the major steam pipe line out in the driveway on the south side of the church. Steam from that line is di-
