Call to Action

SUMMIT OVERVIEW

An analysis of the 1,500 Standard & Poor’s companies over 15 years found that the

more women firms had in top management, the more market value they gener-

ated. With such definitive data, why have companies found it so difficult to take

action and address the gender and diversity gaps within their organizations?

We don’t have to wait for C-Level mandates to take action. Mid-level manag-

ers have the power to change the landscape and foster a culture where pow-

er is shared more equitably, where more employees have access to critical

opportunities and advance to leadership roles and where everyone can make

contributions and drive business success.

To help companies tackle these issues, the Massachusetts Conference for

Women is convening the second annual “Workplaces that Work” Summit.

The Summit offers the most cost effective and time efficient way to gain ac-

cess to the nation’s top strategists on these issues. Our content is not theory

based – it is structured around real and current challenges managers face

while trying to improve their group’s performance.

Power in organizations is shared across a largely male network resulting in deep gaps in pay and job-level for equally skilled and ambitious women employees.

Everyone knows that a diverse workforce unlocks innovation and drives market growth, yet many managers continue to ignore the facts to the detriment of their bottom line.

Gender equality doesn’t just affect women!

Judge and compensate everyone by the same standard, provide equal advancement opportunities for women and men, and ulti-mately build stronger businesses and bottom line results.

Make diverse staffing a business imperative required at all levels from all managers.

Women AND men work together to create a workplace that works for everyone!

PROBLEMS SOLUTIONS

Our approach is geared toward action. It will challenge participants to think differently about staffing and create a workplace that evaluates, compen-sates and offers opportunities for everyone by the same standard.

KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Organizational Transformation FEATURING MIKE ABRASHOFF, NY Times best-selling author, It’s Your Ship Mike Abrashoff developed a reputation across the entire navy as the “go to” person to

solve personnel problems where he represented 80 ships of the US Atlantic Fleet and worked with Commanding Officers to get the best possible officers assigned to their ships. Over the years, both experience and research proved that ships that had more diverse leadership teams also achieved higher levels of performance – ultimately the make-up of an organization should roughly mirror the make-up of the workforce to achieve optimal results. Abrashoff faced his biggest challenge when he got assigned to the USS Benfold; the first ship to accommodate both men AND women and had achieved a dismal record on the integration. In this riveting keynote, Abrashoff will talk about this experience, best practices and lessons learned, the actions he set into place and ultimately share how the ship went from near worst in the Pacific Fleet to being named the best. Attendees will learn the value of creating an inclusive team comprised of diverse backgrounds and will be asked to push their comfort zones to identify concrete takeaways to implement and make positive changes within their organization.

BREAKOUT WORKSHOP: Pioneering Equity through Gender PartnershipFEATURED CASE STUDY ON PROCTER AND GAMBLE GENDER PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE Led by a subject matter expert and featuring a case study executive to share real-life

examples, each workshop offers collaborative strategies relevant across genders to achieve inclusion critical in pioneering equity and creating workplaces that work for everyone. Using a blend of research-and-practice based insights and applications relevant for the work setting, attendees will explore unique gender specific challenges facing leaders as individuals and managers, learn how assumptions and work culture influence efforts to advance women and identify hurdles to men’s engagement in workplace inclusion. Interactive small group activities will join together men and women to allow for a common understanding of today’s current work environment and culture. Participants will focus on developing skills to build inclusive and equitable workplaces through role-plays that practice empathetic and active listening, identifying and interrupting bias and/or exclusionary behavior and working across differences. Offering a safe forum to listen, learn and engage with experts and peers, participants will leave with concrete takeaways to:

• Build a business case to engage men as advocates for change within their organization and ultimately sell this internally;

• Recruit, retain and promote in a way that offers equitable opportunities for women;• Foster a culture where power is shared more equitably and ensure all ideas are

heard and considered;• Ways to form closer ties across gender and partner together more effectively.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:MIKE ABRASHOFF is at the center of one of the most remarkable

modern day stories of organizational transformation. At the age of 36, the Navy selected Abrashoff to become Commander of USS Benfold. At the time he was the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific Fleet – on a ship that was plagued by low morale, high

turnover and abysmal performance evaluations. Few thought that the ship could improve, yet 12 months later the ship was ranked #1 in

performance, using the same crew. People were amazed and the lesson was clear – leadership matters and culture is everything. In many ways, the USS Benfold was an extreme example of the same problems facing many organizations today. That’s why dozens of publications including The Wall Street Journal and Fast Company have cited Abrashoff’s story as an inspiring lesson for business. Leaders especially identify with his being accountable for the results in an environment where he couldn’t make the rules. Abrashoff focused on the one thing he could influence, his crew’s attitude, because culture is the ultimate competitive weapon for any organization. His solution was to establish a set of management principles that he calls The Leadership Roadmap. At the core of his leadership approach on Benfold was a process of replacing command and control with commitment and cohesion, and engaging the hearts, minds and loyalties of workers with conviction and humility. By every measure, these principles achieved breakthrough results. Turnover decreased to an unprecedented 1%. The rate of promotions tripled, and the crew slashed operating expenses by 25%. Regarded as the finest ship in the Pacific Fleet, Benfold won the prestigious Spokane Trophy for having the highest degree of combat readiness. Abrashoff is author of three books. His first, “It’s Your Ship,” has sold over one million copies. His next books, “It’s Our Ship” and “Get Your Ship Together,” showed how his principles have been put into action by business leaders in their own organizations. Prior to commanding USS Benfold, Abrashoff served as the Military Assistant to Secretary of Defense William J. Perry. He also helped draft the air defense plan for naval forces in the Persian Gulf in 1990, coinciding with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait; and served as the executive officer of the Cruiser Shiloh, where he deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against Iraq. Abrashoff is the founder of Aegis Performance Group, a consulting firm which works with and supports leaders as they address leadership, talent and performance challenges within their organizations. @itsyourship @apg_leadership
