UNIVERSITY OF KRAGUJEVAC 1838 – 1976 – TODAY

University of Kragujevac was built on the foundations of the Lyceum (Licej Knjazevstva Serbskog), the first higher education institution in modern Serbia. With the decree of Prince Milos Obrenovic of July 1, 1838. the Lyceum (Lyceum - gardens where philosophy was taught) was founded, and Athanasius Nikolic, an educated engineer, professor of mathematics, geography and „načertanija“ was named for a rector of the Lyceum in Kragujevac.

In the beginning of the sixties of the twentieth century, the first modern higher education institutions emerged in Kragujevac, leading to the establishment of the University “Svetozar Marković” on May 21st 1976, today known as the University of Kragujevac. University of Kragujevac, founded by the Republic of Serbia, is independent higher education institution, which combines education, research and art, as components of unique education process and integrates the functions of all its faculties.

The University of Kragujevac consists of 12 faculties where 20000 students study on over 100 accredited study programs at all study levels (basic academic, master academic, integrated academic and doctoral studies, as well as two study programs of vocational studies).

Within the University of Kragujevac there are 12 faculties with the status of legal entity located in 6 cities: Kragujevac, Čačak, Jagodina, Kraljevo, Užice, Vrnjačka Banja.

University of Kragujevac has turned its emergence and development based on the concept of widespread university, into one of its distinctive advantages, which allows the use of economic, geographical and human resources of the territory stretching over 5,000 km2, inhabited by approximately 2.5 million people.

On the faculties of the University of Kragujevac, study programs are realized by about 1100 teachers and associates.

Until now over 33 000 graduated students, 1023 masters, 800 PhDs and 100 specialists have acquired their professional, academic and scientific titles at the faculties of the University of Kragujevac.

23 Honored Doctors were selected among whom are: academic Ljubomir Simović, sculptor Nikola Koka Janković, painters Vladimir Veličković and Nikola Gvozdenović Gvozdo (Montenegro), writer Barnabir Vongar (Australia), dramatist Harold Pinter (England), and 4 Professors Emeriti.

University of Kragujevac realizes international activities through membership in the European University Association, Balkans Rectors’ Conference, Danube Rectors’ Conference, Community of Mediterranean Universities, World Association of Universities, UNESCO’s University Network and other organizations dealing with higher education issues. University of Kragujevac, as well as the faculties in its structure participated actively in various international educational and research projects: TEMPUS (since 2001 more than 50 TEMPUS projects have been realized), CEEPUS, WUS Austria, COST. The international activities have been successfully continued within the ERASMUS + program.

RESEARCH CENTER OF SASA AND THE UNIVERSITY OF KRAGUJEVAC

The science- research center whose founders are Serbian Academy of Science and Arts (SASA) and the University of Kragujevac, has the status of the University’s organizational unit and has the aim to encourage and develop scientific, educational and cultural activities of the wide area gravitating towards the University. It main activities are realized through the research and scientific projects, organization of scientific events, discussions, lectures, exhibitions, promotions…; the Center also publishes scientific and professional monographs, proceedings and other publications of great importance for the development of science, culture and arts.

CENTER FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT AND STUDENT COUNSELING

The Center was established as an organizational unit of the University of Kragujevac and officially opened on 16th of November 2007. with the main goal to prepare students to enter the job market after graduation, to connect them with the business community and to support them in acquiring those skills and knowledge that are now necessary in the labor market.

The Center is designed as a student service that, through a variety of services and programs, provides support to students and graduates of the University of Kragujevac in career development and helps them to present themselves in the world of business after finishing their studies.

International Projects Office

In terms of providing organizational and technical support for the activities in realization of the current and future international projects at the University of Kragujevac, International Projects Office was established in the middle of 2010.

The Library users are, primarily, students, postgraduates, university professors, workers in the field of science, and all other citizens

The active Library holdings total around 100.000 copies of domestic and foreign books, 2.500 copies of doctoral dissertations and master theses, defended on faculties of the University in Kragujevac, as well as over 600 titles of domestic and foreign journals
