we meet and work with. A workingdefinition might be ‘Diversity is the wordused to describe the relative uniquenessof each individual.’

Our uniqueness includes our skills,interests, experience, values andambitions. Each of us is rich withpossibilities.

The Diversiton calendar seeks toencourage all of us to value thepossibilities in each other and explore theopportunities that difference brings.

Defining diversityThe 2007 Diversity calendar reminds us ofthe main religious celebrations andspecial days and reflects upon the issue of age especially in the light of recent legislation.

But diversity is about much more thanthis. Our attitude to diversity determinesthe way that we view and relate to others

Muslims have five main religious dutiesknown as the Pillars of Islam:

(1) Belief in one God (Allah) and in Muhammed the final prophet;

(2) Prayer five times a day;

(3) Giving to charity;

(4) Fasting from sunrise to sunset duringthe month of Ramadan;

(5) Pilgrimage to Mecca (once in a lifetime, for those who are able).

Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammed(570–632 CE) to be God’s final messengerto mankind. Islam's scripture, the holyQur’an, is a record of revelations receivedby Muhammed from God through theangel Gabriel. Muhammed taught hisfollowers to pray five times a day. Beforeprayer, Muslims prepare themselves bywashing their face, arms and feet. Whenpraying they face Mecca and recitepassages from the Qur’an. Mosques are

Islambuilt so that Muslims can congregate forprayer. The prayer hall has a space, calleda mihrab, indicating the direction ofMecca. To keep the Mosque cleanMuslims remove their shoes beforeentering. Men and women sit separatelyduring prayer. On Fridays a special sermonis given by a leader of the congregationalprayer (the Imam). Ramadan is the monthof fasting and is followed by the festivalof Eid al Fitr.

(1) The truth of suffering – Life containspain and suffering;

(2) The truth of the cause of suffering –Suffering comes from ignorance,attachment and hatred;

(3) The truth of cessation – It is possible tobecome free from suffering byunderstanding and preventing its causes;

(4) The truth of the method – Followingthe method that Buddha realised.

Buddhists do not believe in God the creator orGod as an outside force in their lives.Meditation and experience are central to thespiritual journey. Buddhist scriptures are calledPitakas (baskets) and date from the firstcentury BCE. These sum up Buddhist teachingsand practice. Buddhists believe in reincarnationand that materialistic life ties people to acontinuous cycle of birth and death. By livingthe Four Noble Truths, Buddhists seek to freethemselves from this cycle.

BuddhismBuddhism comes from the teaching ofSiddhartha Gautama who was born in aprincely family in India during the sixthcentury BCE. Leaving behind a life ofluxury, he searched for an answer to thequestion of human suffering. Siddharthafound enlightenment through meditationand became known as the Buddha orenlightened one. The essence of theBuddha’s early preaching focused uponthe Four Noble Truths:

Age Myth No. 1Chronological age determines healthand brings illness and disease

Exercise, nutrition, alcohol intake,smoking and many other lifestylefactors influence health. Although therisk of certain diseases does increasewith age, there are many positiveactions that can be taken byindividuals and employers that canreduce these risks and, increasingly,health screening may play a crucialrole in avoiding preventable diseases.Chronological age is not, therefore,the most important determinant of health.

Age Myth No. 2The gradual death of brain cellsthroughout life results in olderpeople becoming less mentally able,less flexible and more forgetful

The body produces 10,000,000,000non reproductive nerve cells andnormal loss throughout an entirelifetime is estimated to be only about2.5%. This is not a significant factorin mental capacity even in advancedold age and its widespread use toexplain common errors and lapses in concentration or memory is inaccurate.

force and he is always accompanied byhis consort Shakti (“energy”). Hinduismhas many scriptures, mostly written inSanskrit. The most famous Hinduscripture is Bhagavad-gita (the Song ofGod), which teaches that all livingbeings are eternal and spiritual bynature. Bhagavad-gita also teaches howto develop love for God and hiscreation. Hindus believe in reincarnation

– that after this life we will take birthagain. They also believe in karma – thatwhat we do in this life determines whatwill happen to us in our next life. Thegoal is to escape the cycle of birth,death, and rebirth, and to return to thespiritual world. Hindus believe that allcreatures are spiritual by nature sotraditionally lead a life of non-violenceand will not eat meat, fish, or eggs.

HinduismHindus believe that there is oneSupreme God who, being unlimited, hasmany forms, both male and female.One of the most popular forms of Godis Krishna (“the most attractiveperson”). Hindus consider the names ofGod to be non-different from God andchant these names, as mantras, forpurification. Lord Shiva is worshipped byhis devotees as the powerful universal

Age Myth No. 5Older workers don’t like training

The evidence is that training tends tobe substantially concentrated onyounger people and older workers areoften not offered training. Careerdevelopment planning is also seen asonly relevant to younger workers.Older workers are sometimes sent oncourses which do not take account ofthe knowledge and skills that theyhave - which may seem pointless.Training and training methodologiesneed, as with all workers, to berelevant and appropriate.

Age Myth No. 6Older workers take more time off work

Data shows that, in terms offrequency of absence, older people areabsent less often. They show lowerlevels of the short term/non-certifiedabsence which can be so disruptive foremployers, than younger people. It istrue that when older people areabsent, it tends to be more serious andlonger term but, overall, this evens outresulting in no significant rise insickness absence lost with age.

Then theywould hurry back to their tiny makeshift hutsand their grateful, dying parents to eat thisfood that kept them alive. I learnt that weekin week out, year in, year out, that food wasquietly paid for by an Asian businessmanwho was known to no one but the nun.
