Rosa Parks: My StoryRead the passage and answer the following questions.

Rosa Park saw a vacant seat in the middle of the bus and took it. The next stop was the Empire Theatre, and some whites got on. They filled up the white seats and one man left standing. The driver looked back and noticed the man standing. Then he looked back at us. He said, ‘’Let me have some front seats,’’ because they were the front seat of the black section. Nobody moved. We sat just right where we were, the four of us.

The man in the window seat next to me stood up, and I moved to let him pass by me, and then I looked across the aisle and saw that the two women were standing. I moved over to the window seat. I could not see how standing up was going to a ‘make it light for me’. The bus driver saw me still sitting there, and he asked was I going to stand up. I said, ‘’No’’. He said, ‘’I am going to have you arrested’’. Then I said, ‘’You may do that’’. He got out of the bus and stayed outside for a few minutes, waiting for the police.

Principal Approves Longer Passing Periods

A major change has taken place at Main Street Middle School. The period between each class is now five minutes longer. Principal Alans Ryes approved the longer passing periods.

Principal Reyes agreed that the students need extra time between the classes. With a longer passing period, students will not have to leave class to go their lockers or the restrooms. The longer passing period will go into effect on Monday, October 7. From now on, each class except seventh period will be five minutes shorter, and the passing periods will be five minutes longer. School will still be over at 3:00 P.M.

Most students are happy about the change, and they are already making plans. Sixth grader Joanna Tran said, "The extra time will help me clear my head after one class and gear up for the next.’’ One student disapproved of the new passing periods. "I like my classes. I don’t want them to be five minutes shorter.’’

Most teachers will enjoy the extra time as much as the students will. " I am so happy that instruction will not be interrupted by students leaving class to go to the restroom or their lockers,’’ said sixth- grade history teacher Paul Brook.
