The Internet : Mother of all Networks
1970’s US DOD (Dept of Def) developed 1st version of the Internet: DARPA Network (ARPAnet)
Used for quick communication among researchers in various locations.
1980 NSF funds high-speed connection among university centers based on the ARPAnet structure
Infrastructure
A network of networks. Internet “between or among networks
Networks connect computers to allow users to share resources and exchange information easily.
A way for people in network sites ALL OVER THE WORLD to communicate with each other as though they were on the same local area network.

The World Wide Web:An Internet Service
an Internet service that links sites around the world through hypertext documents.
subset of the Internet system
refers to the entire “universe” of network-accessible information
has a body of software, set of protocols and conventions
We use a program called a WEB BROWSER to bring up one of these hypertext/media-based documents.
Hypermedia [linked media] allow us to “travel” from site to site.

Search Engines are programs that help us to locate things:
The address bar in the Google’s Chrome browser features a built-in search engine. Other browsers may follow suit.
Browsers allow us to Bookmark interesting sites that we may wish to re-visit/access more easily. Web services like Diigo also let us do this.
