OVERVIEW Message of a play Setting of a play Vehicle for delivery of message Genres of plays
SETTING OF A PLAY Every play is a story. Every story needs to have a setting. Things to consider:
Where is it?When is it?Who are the characters? What is their world normally like? What is going to change to drive the story?
MESSAGE OF A PLAY As with all literature, good plays aren’t
just stories; they are lessons. Most have a message about one (or
more) of the following:Human relationshipsSocial/societal issuesNational issuesGlobal issuesReligious issuesPolitical issues
VEHICLE FOR DELIVERY OF THE MESSAGE Every story gives its message somehow.
Some have characters say it directly to the audience at some point
Some let the audience figure out some truth through the way events happen
Some show the audience the opposite of what they want to say, and make it ironic
Some make each character represent something, and tell their message symbolically
GENRES OF PLAY Comedy – Funny, with a happy ending. Tragedy – Dramatic, with a sad ending. Tragic comedy – Funny, with a sad
