THE BROOKWOOD COMMUNITY CORE VALUES

Dear Friends, What a tremendous year of blessings we have experienced here at The Brookwood Community! From the opening of the Andrea and Greg Glauser Bike Barn to the dedication of our new Yvonne and David Streit Education and Enterprise Building, we have so much to thank God for, especially for those who have given so generously to the buildings and to support all of Brookwood’s programs. We were not ready for “company” at the dedication event on October 10. There was no landscaping (having learned two weeks prior we needed another water well); there was no furniture in the Citizen Studios or conference room (we saved money by buying wholesale but had to wait longer for delivery); no telephones, computers or AV equipment...and the list goes on! Should we postpone the dedication and wait until it was “perfect”? After discussing the options of dedicating an unfinished building, we made the decision to move ahead, as the Lord reminded Samuel in I Samuel 16:7: “Man looks at the outward appearance, but God sees the heart.” What a firm reminder that it is the hearts of the Citizens, filled with an endless desire to serve Him, that we are celebrating...not a “finished” or “perfect” building. We, like the building, are a work in progress and Brookwood has yet to even come close to “perfect” and we never will. However, the hearts of our Citizens were more than ready to begin using their God-given talents in the beautiful studios that awaited them in the building. Our Citizens are hard at work, in an “unfinished” building and in “less than perfect greenhouses,” crafting beautiful products for your home and glorious plants for your garden. I join our Citizens in inviting you to come to Brookwood’s annual Open House and experience the HEART of what matters most this holiday season...the birth of our Savior...born in an unfinished and imperfect stable, and not ready for “company.” Merry Christmas and blessings in this Holiday Season, Vivian ShuddeChief Executive Officer

Diane Phillips sure has had a lot to celebrate! This summer was her 30th Anniversary at Brookwood, and Diane celebrated her 50th birthday in October. We asked Diane about her time at Brookwood, and here is what she said…In her own words.

IN HER OWN WORDS “

people come from all over the Houston area and the world to visit. One day I was scared to ask, but I went up to my dad and asked him if I have to leave Brookwood when he dies, and he said that I’m going to be able to live at Brookwood whether my dad and mom are living or not. Thank you for letting me write about this wonderful place where I work and live.

A graduate of Memorial High School in Houston, Diane is smart, thoughtful, loves to tell stories, and enjoys working in the Café and in Stonecasting. Diane is a Libra, a huge Astros fan and has a great sense of humor. She lives at the Inn, is a proud member of the Brookwood Handbell Ensemble, and doesn’t let her physical disabilities get in the way of being an active Citizen at Brookwood.

What I like about Brookwood is that everyone helps each other and cares for one another no matter what their disability may be. This also includes the wonderful staff that work here. I not only like (I LOVE❢) being in the Handbell choir, going out to the movies with my friends, doing art projects and whatever fitness activities Greg has planned for us to do. I really loved playing the handbells for the Houston Astros.

What I like about my job in Stonecasting is that I havefriends sitting nearby who are willing to help. I like to do the detail painting. What makes Brookwood a specialplace is the special care for one another, and that

#1ASTROS FANS!The Brookwood Handbell Ensemble had the incredible honor of playing the National Anthem with the Houston Bronze Ensemble at a Houston Astros home baseball game at Minute Maid Park. Citizens practiced together for months leading up to the game in August. After the performance, the Handbell Ensembles, along with a group of Brookwood Citizens and staff members, stayed to root on the home team. It was an exciting season seeing the Houston Astros come so close to another World Series title for the second time in three years. As spirited and devoted fans, the Brookwood Citizens in Brookshire and at Grand Parkway dressed up in their Astros attire for all the World Series games.

More than 250 people gathered on October 10, 2019 to celebrate the dedication and ribbon cutting of the Yvonne and David Streit Education and Enterprise Building. This building is the first of the Brookwood and Beyond campaign initiatives to be finished and offers expanded studios to enable 100 additional Citizens to join the Brookwood Community. The building is also the home of the Stephen C. Beasley Center for Learning outreach program to share the “Brookwood Way” methods with people from around the world. Heading up the project was the Construction Committee of Norm Brinkman, Barbara Bellatti, Mike Hall, Sylvia Patton, Johnna Hamilton, Adrianne Nowlin and Paul Russell; Architects John Gabriel and Yan Zhang; and Don Woo, Fred Grona, Art Guajardo and Cliff Craig of Mission Constructors. Many thanks to Stephanie and Brad Tucker for their leadership as chairs of the Brookwood and Beyond Capital Campaign and all the donors who made this building possible.

2020 Brookwood Benefit Lunch Co-Chairs Christi Myers & Russell Laughead and Julie & Chris Whitten invite you to the Brookwood Community’s biennial Benefit Lunch on Friday, April 3, 2020 at the Marriott Marquis Houston. The theme of the event is Family Matters: Celebrating 35 Years of The Brookwood Community and the keynote speaker is Reid Ryan of the Houston Astros. Proceeds allow Brookwood to provide over $1.1 million in scholarships annually to deserving Citizens.

When the Brookwood Citizens put their mind to something, they can accomplish anything! For their first time participating in the national Bike to the Beach program, Citizens on the Men’s and Women’s tandem teams rode at least 5 miles each to get to their 25 mile goal in the Texas Ride for Autism and disABILITIES on September 28. The Bike Riders trained for four months with a 5 mile route around campus. Led by Greg Glauser, the ride from Brazoria Wildlife Sanctuary in Lake Jackson to San Luis Pass Park in Galveston was a tough but rewarding one. The Brookwood Interdependence Team raised an incredible $50,000 for Brookwood and Bike to the Beach, and helped increase awareness for autism and other disabilities. There’s already a long list of Citizen riders who can’t wait to participate next year!

SPECIAL TEAMS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS

A B OV E

It’s always the highlight of the summer at the annual Fried Chicken Lunch honoring the generous chicken donations from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Poultry Committee supporters!

Energy Transfer employees came together to raise an incredible $23,000 for Brookwood at their BBQ Cook Off event in October.

THANK YOU to everyone who has made an impact on special needs adults through the Special Teams for Special Needs program!

The Special Teams for Special Needs football program sponsored by Mustang CAT continues to be an incredible blessing for the Brookwood Community. For every special teams point scored in the 2018 season by the Houston Texans and Texas A&M, Mustang CAT gave a donation to Brookwood. The Texans special teams unit made a huge impact both on and off the field. Led by special teams defensive back Johnson Bademosi, the Houston Texans treated Brookwood to a VIP tour of the Texans facility this summer and presented a check for $67,000 from Mustang CAT.

Citizens in the Ceramics studio proudly accepted a check for $5,000 from the proceeds of

Jordan Ranch community’s highly attended Crawfish Boil event.

Texas A&M Athletics gave the ladies of Brookwood the ultimate fan experience in August. They joined the Texas A&M volleyball players and coach for a fitness workout, a special tour of Kyle Field, along with an incredible gift of $45,000 from Mustang CAT.

13

Over 100 H-E-B employees from the entire Houston region came out to assist in various projects around campus. H-E-B covered the costs of these projects thanks to an incredible $68,000 gift from the H-E-B Tournament of Champions golf tournament. Along with H-E-B Buddy, volunteers helped assemble patio furniture and tables, decorated Christmas trees, painted, wrapped gifts, mulched, power washed and renovated the Horticulture break room. H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Service Day at Brookwood was the largest turnout and the first time a TOC service project was selected for the Houston area. Brookwood will also be featured in a video at the next Tournament of Champions event in May 2020. Thank you H-E-B for your generosity and commitment to special needs adults!

An Incredible Day of Service

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!
