ALCOHOL AS A DRUG
Alcohol found in beverages such as beer, wine and liquor is Ethanol
Ethanol is produced when yeast changes sugar into Carbon Dioxide and alcohol
ALCOHOL AS A DRUG
Alcohol content is measured in “proof”.
Proof is twice the percentage of alcohol by volume.
In other words, a bottle of liquor that is 80 proof is 40 percent alcohol by volume.

Beers and wine carry labels indicating the % of their alcohol content
Beverages with a greater % of alcohol such as whiskey have the proof listed on the label

A Depressant is a drug that slows the activity of the body’s nervous system
WHO USES ALCOHOL?
People often think of a person who has a serious drinking problem as someone who sleeps on park benches and wears shabby clothes
In reality, heavy drinkers come from all kinds of cultures, backgrounds, levels of education, ages, etc.
WHY PEOPLE DRINK
The reasons why people drink are as varied as themselves.
Advertising promotes the image of a drinker as attractive, healthy, successful, etc.
LEGAL RISKS
Selling alcohol to someone under the age of 21 is a criminal offense
Law prohibits minors (people under 21) from buying or possessing alcohol
The law also requires people who are old enough to drink alcohol legally to behave responsibly

At .060 judgment is somewhat impaired, people are less able to make rational decisions about their capabilities (for example, driving).

At .080 there is a definite impairment of muscle coordination and driving skills; this is legal level for intoxication in most states.
At .10 there is a clear deterioration of reaction time and control; this is legally drunk in all states.

Tolerance causes a drinkers body to need increasingly larger amounts of alcohol to achieve the same effect
From that tolerance comes: dependence, addition, withdrawal

Alcohol is the number one drug problem among teenagers.
2/3’s of all students don’t know that alcohol is a drug. It affects both the mind and the body and can lead to addiction.
Children of alcoholics are 4 times more likely to become alcoholics.
The effect of alcohol is directly proportionate to body weight; young people who weigh less are affected faster and more severely than fully grown adults.

Alcoholism is a disease in which the alcoholic progresses through stages.

Treatment for alcoholism involves detoxification, rehabilitation, and membership in support groups
WHY?
Nondrinkers abstain from alcohol for religious beliefs or social customs, and because it’s harmful effects outweigh helpful effects.

Tolerance- When the body becomes accustomed to or builds up a resistance to a drug
Tolerance causes a need of increasingly larger amounts, which can lead to addiction, withdrawal, overdose
What a drug does to your body is called drugs action
What you feel is drugs effect: a physical or mental response to the drugs action
Drugs as produce side effects, which are unwanted, even dangerous, physical and mental effects cause by the drug.

Stimulants: Speeds up the activities of the central nervous system (i.e. cocaine)
Hallucinogens: Alter perception, thought, and mood (i.e. LSD)
Marijuana: A depressant, stimulant, and a mild hallucinogenic drug (i.e. “pot”, “grass”)
