Must stay on line Extent of violence Number of suspects Location of suspects Safe arrival point for responders Continuous updates for responders
Lockdown and creating barriers is the safest action in most cases.
• Columbine actually designed to cause fleeing
• Must safeguard students from stress reactions
• Allows for accountability
Lockdowns vs Fleeing
Locking DoorsSingle most important defense used
against intruders in schools
Can use an intermediate device to keep door
from latching (i.e., magnets or popsicle sticks)
If you get nothing else from this class but lock your doors, it has been a
success!
CodesArticulate actions for the procedure you want
carried out without using codes
Exception: Violence within the building
School SecurityOne point of access in building
Visitor identification Enforced by Staff Stranger identification by students – life skill
School identification Staff Students
