Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for “fifth of May”

The date commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over

French forces at the Battle of Puebla (Batalla de Puebla)

on May 5, 1862

May 5th is observed in the United States as a celebration

of Mexican pride and heritage

Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day

Mexico City a year later– French Emperor Maximillian became ruler of

Mexico• French Victory was also short-lived– France only controlled Mexico for three years

(1864-1867)– Following the U.S. Civil War, the United States

provided assistance to Mexico to expel the French from control
