HAPPY CHANUKAH TO ALL OUR JEWISH FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS
b e t w e e n t h e m a t e r i a l i s m o f
H e l l e n i s m a n d the deep spiri-
tual force of Judaism, Judaism
found the strength to sustain itself
and its victory made possible the
perpetuation not only of the
Hebraic tradition itself but the
entire Judaic philosophy which
gave rise to what is called the
Judaeo-Christian civilization.
Undoubtedly, a considerable
share of the importance which has
been attached to Chanukah is its
chronological proximity to
Christmas and the necessity of
offering a Jewish counterpart to the
influence which this Christian festi-
val exerts upon Jewish children. Be
that as it may, it is no more than fit-
ting that we celebrate joyously this
spiritual victory, ever-present testi-
mony to the validity of a great reli-
gion and ethical system.
The story of Chanukah is,
with that of Queen Esther of Purim
fame, among the best-known leg-
ends of Jewish history. Judas
Maccabee, his father Mattathias
and the other stalwarts of the
Maccabean line, have been cele-
brated in song and story for cen-
turies and there are few Jewish
children who have not been thrilled
by the heroism of their ancestors.
For the adult, of course,
Chanukah has a greater signifi-
cance than that merely of a suc-
cessful struggle against a tyranni-
cal conqueror, for the centuries fol-
lowing the martial achievements of
the Maccabees show how evanes-
cent was the military victory which
these heroes had won. Its greater
significance lies in the victory of
the spirit which was won in the
hills of Judaea. In the struggle

RABBI YEHUDA GLICK PREPARES TO LEAVE SHAARE ZEDEK
Hospital after being shot by Arab assassins. Rabbi Glick gave a
touching and emotional press conference thanking those who had
helped save his life. He made special note of the fact that at the
hospital he was treated by both Jewish and Arab doctors and
caretakers working side by side. These are the Muslims, said
Glick, “who are bringing respect to God and their religion, not
those who murder in the name of religion”. Photo credit: Shaare

CHEMO AT NIGHT?NEW ISRAELI STUDY SUGGESTS TUMORS GROW MORE QUICKLY AT NIGHT
By LINDA GRADSTEIN, MEDIA LINE
Cancer scientistshave long been interested inhow and why tumors growand spread. Now a group atthe Weizmann Institute ofScience has found thattumors might grow morequickly at night, meaningthat it might be more effi-cient to give chemotherapyduring the night rather thanduring daytime.
“It could mean thatsome treatments should bedone during the night,”Yehoshua Enuka, one of theauthors of the report toldThe Media Line. “It could
also lead to a better under-standing of the exact biolog-ical and molecular mecha-nism that governs theprocess of tumor progres-sion.”
The findings whichwere published in Nature
Communications, were doneon gastric tumors in miceand the experiment has notbeen done yet on humansubjects. In the case of themice, which are more activeduring the night and sleepduring the day, the tumorsgrew more quickly duringthe day. The hypo-
thesis is that in the case ofpeople, the tumors will growfaster at night than duringthe day. It would thereforebe more effective to givechemotherapy at night.
Non-scientists mightquestion how much validitya study on mice could haveon human cancer, but sci-entists say humans aremore similar to mice thanwe might think.
“There’s a concept ofa model organism in biolo-gy,” Don Katcoff of theFaculty of Life Sciences atBar Ilan University told The
Media Line. “The physiologyis similar and many of thesame rules apply.”
He also said thefindings that were pub-lished do seem to be break-ing new ground.
“They found that thetumors became smaller ifchemotherapy was given tothe mice during the day-time, which is equivalent toour night,” he said. “Theyfound that it the differencewas statistically significant, but there is a conglomerateo f f ac to rs tha t go in to

The ObamaAdministration rejectedIsraeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu’s com-parison of ISIS and Hamas,a view that is both ignorantand dangerous, but consis-tent with the internationaltendency to treat thePalestinians as a uniqueclass that deserves specialtreatment, including look-ing the other way when itcomes to their ideology.
Hamas, however, does not conceal its inten-tions, publishing its coven-
ant in 1988 with an explicitcall for Israel’s destruction.Notice also that Hamas doesnot distinguish betweenJews and Israel: Here are afew excerpts:

THE PRINCIPALITYOF MONACO: When wedecided to spend a few daysin Nice, friends told us totake the train one night andexperience dazzling MonteCarlo in Monaco.
The principality ofMonaco (http://www.visit-monaco.com) has a colorfuland fascinating historyfilled with barbarians, kingsand even a movie star. It isa story of castles, epic bat-tles and untold riches.Since 2005, H.S.H. PrinceAlbert II – already known asthe green Prince for hisinterest in the environment– has been leading thePrincipality into the 21stcentury with the support ofhis sisters H.R.H.Princess of Hanover and
H.S.H. Princess Stephanie.In 2011 Prince Albert mar-ried Charlene Wittstock.
Monaco enjoys aprivileged location at theheart of MediterraneanEurope. The Principality isnestled between the Alpsand the Mediterranean Sea,bounded by the FrenchRiviera to the west and theItalian Riviera to the east. This is the second smallestcountry in the world, afterVatican City - three mileslong by one-half miles wide(about the size of New York'sCentral Park). The receptors are pro-tein molecules found eitheron the cell’s surface or with-in cells. The researchfocused on two specificreceptors – the epidermalgrowth factor receptor,EGFR, helps cells, includingcancer cells, grow andmigrate. The second recep-tor binds to a steroid hor-mone called a glucocorticoid(GC), similar to cortisol. This is often called the“stress hormone” becauseits levels rise in stressfulsituations.

What makes negoti-ations with Hamas or anyother Islamist groupimpossible is that theybelieve they are actingaccording to theimmutable word of god.Israel cannot do anythingto satisfy them, asEgyptian clericMuhammad HusseinYa’qub said in a televisedsermon in 2009. “If theJews left Palestine to us,would we start lovingthem? Of course not,” heexplained. “The Jews areinfidels not because I sayso but because Allahdoes… They aren’t our ene-mies because they occupyPalestine; they would beour enemies even if theyhad not occupied any-thing.” This is one exampleof why State DepartmentArabists are delusional tobelieve that solving theconflict with thePalestinians will bringpeace and tranquility tothe Middle East.

As our Torahinforms/warns us, Ishmaelis a "wild man". The Torahuses this description onlyonce, and it has been trueever since.
From the time of andjust after the Six Day Warwhen the Israeli governmentand particularly DefenceMinister Moshe Dayanurged the defeated and pan-icked Arabs not to flee forthe borders, the seeds for anever increasing Jewishbloodletting were sown.
There is no othercountry in the Mid East asstrong militarily as Israel. Then again it depends onhow one measures strength. If at the end of the day thebest jets and pilots andtanks etc. have no effecton a population that fearswaiting for a bus or prayingin the morning, then howstrong can the countryactually be? How sick is itto hear too many politi-cians, journalist, juristsand other beacons of moral-ity and knowledge, equatethe "extremists on bothsides" and warn of a lack ofa " hopeful political horizon”or “the need for dialogue.”

Intifada broke out in 1987Halabi continued workingin Israel to achieve thePalestinian goal: save upmoney, build a house andget married, which is whathe did in 1990. Without thework in Israel, this wouldnot have been possible. InIsrael, he says, he makes$80 per day as a laborer, compared to $60 per day inthe Palestinian territories.
“I tile one squaremeter (for a Palestinian pro-ject) in the West Bank, I get$7. In “settlements”, thesame amount gets me $14,while inside Israel it’s $28.The decision is an easy one.
Halabi says on aver-

“When I see my kidscan’t eat until I go to thesettlement to work, ofcourse I’m going to go so Ican not only feed them butgive them a good life,” hesaid. Hikmat Elian, 22,dropped out of college hisfirst year, mostly becausehe did not see any jobprospects ahead. Instead, from 2011-2013, he workedon the production plantstaff at Sodastream, inMaale Adumim, nearJerusalem.
While he said it wasa very difficult job, some-times standing 12 hours onyour feet, he says it wasworth it because they paidwell. “No one ever ques-tioned my working in a set-tlement because everyoneknows the money is betteron the Israeli side,” Elian, aresident of Al Azaria toldThe Media Line.
His average salarywas $7 per hour and onSaturdays he would receive$17 an hour. Each morning,he would go down to therendezvous spot where anIsraeli bus would pick himup along with 200 people.
Of course, there was theusual security check.
“There were argu-ments but the kind that youhave at any work. They werenot political or anything likethat. There was no discrim-ination against us,” he said.
In 2010, the PA cre-ated a fund to provide alter-native employment andgrants in an effort to bothdiscourage Palestiniansfrom working in the settle-ments and boost the WestBank economy. But that didnot bear fruit. The instabili-ty in the West Bank did notgive hope either.
Economist NasrAbdelkarim says if the laborministry or PA in generalwants to stop people fromworking in Israel or settle-ments, they need to encour-age it. “It’s not a politicaldecision. Palestinian labor-ers are motivated by theeconomic factors,” he said.

Palestinians working in Israel or for Israeli com-
panies on the West Bank receive far higher wages
than their counterparts do in Ramallah or in other
Palestinians cities and villages. Hillel Manne, cen-
ter, owns a boutique winery in Beit El. He employs
two Palestinian workers from nearby Ramallah.
Their weekly wages are six times what the would
earn working for a Palestinian enterprise. While
they do experience some resentment when they
return home, their primary concern is to
provide for their families.

Muslim Community is a rel-atively small branch ofIslam that was founded atthe end of the 19th centuryand has between 10 and 20million followers. There have beenriots in Muslim countries inwhich Ahmadis were killedfor their "heretic" beliefs.`

The board ofWashington D.C. synagogueKesher Israel has fired itschief Rabbi, Barry Freundel, following his October arreston voyeurism charges. The board, which toldFreundel that he mustvacate his residence no laterthan January 1, 2015, saidthat “the alleged acts lead-ing t o th i s s t ep were a
gross violation of law, priva-cy, halakha and trust.”Freundel has also been sus-pended without pay fromhis position at TowsonUniversity, where he taughtin the philosophy and reli-gious studies department.

A Win For the

Several weeks ago,the East Midlands town ofLeicester agreed to boycottIsraeli goods. The LaborParty dominated council ofits western neighbourDudley appeared set to fol-low suit.
But pressure fromJewish community lead-ers and local Conservativecouncillors resulted in adramatic shift in policy. No boycott vote was takenand for the moment theissue is off the table.
Simon Johnson, the Jewish Leadershipcouncil’s chief executive, told Dudley’s Councillorsthat “the proposedmotion would have beenillegal, run contrary to the
mously passed a bill thatwould end Social Securitypayments to former Nazis. The No Social Security forNazis Act closed a loopholethat had allowed ex-Naziswho lied about their past tokeep their benefits, as longas they left voluntarily orsimply fled before they weredeported. So, too, have Peter Mueller, now liv-ing in Worms, Germany,Wasyl Lytwyn, now believedto in Ukraine and MartinHartman, thought to be liv-ing in Berlin.
Jewish groups wel-comed the bill and urgedthe Senate to pass a similarmeasure now under consid-eration. “Now that mostsuspected Nazi perpetratorshave been deported or havefled the U.S.”, said AbrahamFoxman, national directorof the Anti-DefamationLeague. “It’s time to focuson ending any possibleremaining federal benefitsbeing paid to them”.

JEWISH AND ARAB STUDENTS AT THE MAX
Rayne Hand in Hand School for Bilingual
Education show their solidarity following the
November 29 arson attack in which the
school’s two first grade classrooms were set
on fire, causing extensive damage. Anti-
Arab graffiti was sprayed around the school.
The school is one of the Jerusalem
Foundation’s flagship projects. It has a pop-
ulation of 613 Arab and Jewish children,
from pre-kindergarten through to 12th grade.
The students study together in both Hebrew
and Arabic. On the first school day following
the attack children returned to school. Their
sign says “We’re all together, without fear
and hate”.
Independence Party coun-cillors on Dudley’s Councilplanned to oppose themotion. UK leader PaulBrothwood accused thelocal Labor party of “caringmore about the West Bankthan the West Midlands...Inreality this motion isunworkable, as the councilwould need to throw outmost computers, mostmodern phones, a quarterof NHS generic drugs andall their latest scanners”.
Patrick Hurley, leader of the town’sConservative councillors, believes that the motion“will now be kicked into thelong grass.” He does notthink Labor councillorQadar Zada or her col-leagues will be ”stupidenough” to bring it backanytime soon. And if theydo, Hurley says,Conservative councillorswill again lead the fight.
Interestingly, thelocal Labor MP, Ian Austin, has been one of Israel’sstaunchest defenders in theHouse of Commons.
These are not easytimes for the 2000 Jewsliving in the besieged cityof Lugansk, now under thecontrol of pro-Russianrebels. Several hundredJews recently lined up forseveral hours in freezingtemperatures to receive aidpackages. “That so manycame despite the cold”,said Shalom Gopin, thecommunity’s rabbi andChabad emissary, “illus-trates the growing need forassistance in a beleagueredcommunity...Winter is onlyworsening the situation ofpeople who are alreadyfinding it increasingly diffi-cult to scrape a living in awar-ravaged place withintermittent electricity.”The fact that there wasshoving and shoutingamong those standing inline, something unheard offor the Jewish community, indicates just how desper-ate people are.

fighting the town’s syna-gogue has remained openbut it will be difficult to doso as the harshness of win-ter sets in. And yet someLugansk Jews are actually
returning home after fleeingfor refugee camps earlier inthe year. “They had enoughof living like refugees”, saysGopin, “so they decided totake their chances.”
