Non-Arabic speaking students who wish to shrdy Arabic at Kuwait University enrollin the courses offered by the Arabic Language Unit at the Language Centre. Thesecourses are divided into three levels Q) Elenentary $\ Intemediqte (ln) Advanced,and covered through tkee academic semestefs, Each academic year consists oftwosemesters: September- January/ Fbruary- June. No summer courses are offered.

The Arabic language programme is open to both undergraduate and postgraduatestudents. The courses are designed as support or continuation of the academiccurricula given to the students at therc home universities. At-the end of ove.t soLtisf,i, j ,- ., ,successful candidates will receive certificates ofattendance. It is hoped that the periodof Ianguage study, which the students spend at the Language Cntre, will contributesignificantly towards the attainment ofan academic degree at their home universities.

The type ofArabic taught is modem standard Arabio. However,are also exposed to classical Arabic literature.

ASI- 094 (Elementary)(1.{on-bredit, about 200h,rs per semester)

An intensive basic course in Standard Arabic for beginners. It covers thefollowing topics:

Arabic phonemic and writ ing system.Basic morphological rules related to word derivatio[ and olassificatiorUsing bilingual Arabic dictionaries.Simple nominal and verbal sentences.Emphasis on the peculiar Arabic phonetic or grammatical features notcommon in other languages.

A.n intdrmediate course based upon the skills of AS'I- 094. Its contents, comprise ofthe following:

More morphological and syntactic points in Arabic grammar not covered ordetailed in 094.About 1000 new vocabulary items related to variety ofsocial and culturalaspects of life.More emphasis upon the basic Arabic linguistio skills, through functionaldrills.Longer reading passages about a good number ofsocial and cultural areas,especially ){rab and Muslim ones.Some, simplified or original, Iiterary texts, in addition to few short originalIslamic ones.
