The most common use of reflexives is to express actions that are done to oneself such as verbs used to describe daily actions.

Levantarse – to get oneself up Lavarse – to wash oneself Cepillarse los dientes – to brush one’s teeth

Many verbs change meaning when they are in the reflexive form. Study the list on p. 155.

Ir – to go but irse – to leave Volver – to return but volverse – to become Quedar –to be located but quedarse – to stay

Some verbs exist only in their reflexive form. Darse cuenta de – to realize Quejarse – to complain Portarse bien – to behave Portarse mal – to misbehave

You may attach the reflexive pronoun to all infinitive verbs, gerunds -ing(ando/iendo), and affirmative commands. (You must attach to affirmative and must never attach to negative commands).

Used to tell what people do to or for one another

Only use the first (nosotros) and third (ellos) plural form of the verb preceded by “nos” or “se”

Ex. Ellos se abrazan. They hug each other.Nosotros nos llevamos bien. We get

along well.
