The Friends of the National Railway Museum (North East Branch) is presenting a new display exploring ‘The Story of Shildon Works’. The photographic exhibition is currently on display at Locomotion, where it can be seen until Wednesday 12th June. Historically, Shildon was a town highly skilled in heavy engineering for the railway industry, developing out of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (opened 1825) and lasting until 1984. Shildon Wagon Works was a vast railway workshop specialising in manufac- turing and rolling stock. In its heyday (mid-1950s) the works employed 3,400 people. However the transfer of freight traffic to road brought about the closure of the works in 1984. At the time the closure of the works was a devastat- ing blow for Shildon. However the reputation of Shildon as a railway town lives on, with examples of wagons from the site on display at Locomotion alongside the exhibition. The museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm. Local Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, Michelle Muir is encouraging Shildon residents to consider volunteering to give something back to the local community. Michelle said, “We are looking for people to help collect in Supermarkets in Bishop Auckland, in June. We have been very fortunate that the local supermarkets have allowed us to do so, but we need volunteers to help out. Even if it’s just a couple of hours, Macmillan would be very grateful. “Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed, you need a team of people in your corner supporting you every step of the way. That’s who we are. “Many people find the benefits of volunteering are threefold; meeting new people and making friends, gaining new skills and most importantly, having fun.” For more information on how to get involved, contact Michelle Muir on 07809 554 967 or email [email protected]. Kenneth Stephen Brown pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking, to dangerous driving, to driving without a licence or third party insurance and to possession of ampheta-mine, when he appeared before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently. The 33 year-old, of Douthwaite Road, Bishop Auckland, who admitted a £20 a day amphetamine addiction, was lucky to walk away relatively unharmed,

after the VW Golf he was driving, crashed and overturned on the Shildon bypass on 6th May. Following a domestic incident Brown took his partner’s car, without her consent, and was witnessed overtaking vehicles whilst crossing double white lines. The car ended up on its roof and was extensively damaged but Brown was luckily thrown clear. The accident was seen by

an off duty police officer, who called the police and gave chase, as Brown had run away from the scene, despite injuring his leg.Matters were adjourned in order for the Probation Service to provide a pre-sentence report. In the meantime, the defendant was given an interim driving disqualifi-cation and released on un-conditional bail, to return before the court on 13th June.

John Cant, who admits to being an alcoholic, drinking nine litres of strong cider daily, could not fully recall details of his visit to the Lifestyle Express Store on the evening of 6th May, but pleaded guilty to a charge of racially aggravated harassment, arising out of his actions there, when he appeared before mag-istrates at Newton Aycliffe

Alcoholic “Cant” recallrecently. Cant, aged 44, of Jubilee Road, was said to regularly use the shop, in Church Street, in order to purchase alcohol and had entered it on this occasion accompa-nied by his partner and his dog. The shopkeepers had told him that dogs were not allowed on the premises and Cant had responded

by being aggressive and abusive, calling them names and swearing.CCTV footage showed the defendant looking drunk and being escorted from the premises by his partner. In defence it was stated that Cant had been going into the shop with his dog for over two years but new owners had a right to enforce different rules.Although the defendant could not fully recall the incident, he accepted that he must have reacted and used the bad language as charged and he apologised for that. Cant, who has a previous conviction for a similar offence, was fined a total of £238, which included £30 compensation for each of his victims.

Shildon youngsters play at Stadium of LightShildon AFC Develop-ment Centre’s under 9/10s travelled to Sunderland’s Stadium of Light for the Foundation of Light Tournament on Tuesday 28th May. The tournament gave the youngsters the chance to play at the home of the Premiership club, with every player going home with a bag full of goodies to remember their day. The Foundation of Light uses the power of football to involve, educate and inspire young people and their families through a range of initiatives aimed at improving lives across the North East. The team was managed on the day by Paul Foster, and took to the field for their first kick off at 9.30am, earning a no-scoring draw against Durham Phoenix. The second game, against a Sunderland Foundation team, again resulted in a 0-0 draw with some great goal-keeping by Cameron Heale for Shildon. The third game against

Shincliffe U10s ended in a very unlucky defeat by a single goal with the Shincliffe goalkeeper keeping Shildon at bay with some fine goalkeeping. The fourth fixture brought Shildon’s first win against Consett AFC Bulldogs - a one sided affair with the winning goal scored by Callum Brown after a great through ball from Kane Hopwood. A defeat came in the fifth fixture but despite this the team made the play-offs for third and fourth positions in the competition. This would be against a

team from Washington. The play off fixture was again a one sided affair with Shildon having numerous chances through Jacob Race and Will Dixon throughout the game but not hitting the back of the net. However, a Washington break resulted in a goal against the run of play and placed Shildon into a 4th position out of a total of 14 teams overall. “We’re very proud of the team’s efforts and would like to say well done to them all for doing Shildon proud,” said their delighted manager.

The North East Track and Field Championships were staged at Gateshead Inter-national stadium over the bank holiday weekend and a small but elite band of Shildon’s athletes soared to success. Rachel McHugh led the jumps group by example when securing double gold in the u20 women’s long and triple jump events.U15 girl Courtnie Mills added 12cm to her long jump pb, which gave her the silver medal. Jade Hepple strove to match the older girls’ achievements and a fine performance in the u13 long jump meant Jade leapt over 4m for the first time and secured 4th place.Lone male long jumper Josh McLay proudly added the North East title to his portfolio.Georgia Hirst gave a powerful performance to secure the U17 women’s 300m title in 42.49s. Ciara Hughes, the club’s new Wear Valley Junior Girls 100m champion raced well to record new pbs in both the u15 girls 100m and 200m heats. The club’s three U13 girl entries then gave the sprint coaches a proud moment as all three qualified from their heats and lined up in the 100m final. All gave pb performances in the event

with 10 year-old Maddie securing a fine silver medal. Rachel Bennett (also 10) finished 5th and 11 year-old specialist long jumper, Jade finished 7th.Again, all three ran pbs in the 200m, with Maddie and Rachel qualifying for the final where they finished in 6th and 8th position. Also racing to a new pb over 200m, Josh McLay competed in the U15 boys event, breaking the 27s barrier for the first time. Competing in the senior men’s 400m heats, Scott Dining stepped up in distance and gave a season’s best performance.Representing the middle distance group in the U20 mens’ 1500m, Michael Bleasby broke through the 4 minute barrier for a new pb and secured the silver medal.U20 women’s representa-tive Amy Etherington also battled to a medal in the 1500m, this time bronze being the colour.Venturing further afield, Shildon’s road runners sent two teams to participate in the Edinburgh marathon relays. Each team consisted of four legs with each leg completing 8.3 miles.First team to complete for Shildon in 3h 47.58 were John Gray, Sarah Tilley, Liz Woods and Kev Thornton, earning them 146th place.

Shildon Railway Cricket Club found to their cost that their teams need to be at full strength if they are to compete against others in the Readers Durham Cricket League. But it was in last Thursday’s cup tie, against Premiere League side Blaydon, when the difference in class really showed. Shildon batted first and made a creditable 111 but the Tynesiders breezed to victory without losing a wicket. On Saturday, a weakened 1st XI were skittled out for 70, at 2011 Senior League

Railwaymen strugglechampions, Kimblesworth. The home side then went on to win by 9 wickets. At home, the 2nd XI made 156 for 9 with Thomas Moss leading the way, scoring 55. However, Kim-blesworth secured victory by 7 wickets, despite an excellent spell of bowling by teenager Liam Horner. The Bank Holiday fixtures on Monday were always going to prove to be difficult and Tudhoe quickly dismissed the home side for 61 after another poor batting per-formance from the Shildon 1st XI. In reply, Tudhoe lost

3 wickets before achieving the lowly target set by Shildon. At Tudhoe, the 2nd team saw the home side declare at 225 for 5, Matthew Brown taking 4 for 40. In reply, only Brown again showed real application with the bat, making 41 out of the total of 117 all out.Next Saturday (1st) the 1st team are at Dawdon with the 2nd team at home in the reverse fixture. On Monday (3rd) the Under 15s are at home to Crook and on Wednesday (5th) the Under 13s are away to Evenwood.

Shildon AFC Development Centre’s under 9/10s, in red, had the chance of a dream day out, playing at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light in the Foundation of Light Tournament.
