Troops to get a Sweet Greeting from home

Sweet Greeting in Church Street will be sending goodies to British troops.Owners of Sweet Greetings in Church Street, Glen and Lyn Neilson, are hoping people in the town will call in and help a good cause. They are planning on sending gift packages of sweets and goodies to British troops stationed

in war zones over the Christmas period.Customers can choose the sweets they would like to send or can simply leave some money and have the items selected for them.Glen, a former submarine operator said, “We can

send sweets to a general regiment or mess, or we can send them to an individual if that’s what people want.”Military sweet hampers can also be purchased online at www.sweet-greetingsshildon.co.uk.

Halloween at Locomotion

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon is situated on the site of the Stockton & Darlington Railway – said to be one of the most haunted railways in the world! The Stockton & Darlington Railway’s Grand Opening in September 1825 was one of the most significant events that this area has ever seen – and it’s not surprising, therefore, that it’s something that has left its mark and memories … in more ways than one. Some people have

mentioned hearing the sound of horses’ hooves along the railway line, yet have seen no horses in the area. Many say that these are the spirits of the horses who walked alongside that first historic steam train. What’s more, visitors and staff at the museum have reported paranormal oc-currences – with sightings and experiences around the site’s historic buildings and heritage vehicles. Perhaps these are connected to the ghosts of our railway past?

Locomotion is giving visitors the chance to learn more about these stories – with a spooky Railway Ghost Walk on Monday 31st October from 10pm. This is a ticket-only event, open to visitors aged 16 and over. Tickets are on sale now, priced £10 per person, which includes a 90 minute tour around the museum site and refresh-ments. For more information, or to book, call Locomotion-on 01388 771439 or email [email protected].

The site around the museum is thought to be haunted.

Charles’s footnote: while being positive and remaining optimistic at all times, it is nev-ertheless wise to be ready to face the dif-ficulties of life when they occur. Then we can be in a position to anticipate them with dignity and, at the same time, maintain a high morale.

Have you got a clue???

This picture was recently discovered during a house clearance in Shildon. Not knowing who the football team in the photo

is, or when the picture was taken, the gentleman that found it began to ask around the town - but to no avail! Nobody seems

to have any idea who the team is or are even able to identify any of the indi-viduals.Any ideas???

Locomotion: the National Railway Museum at Shildon is appealing to former employees of Shildon Wagon Works to come forward with their stories and memories of working on Merry-Go-Round (MGR) wagons. In May the museum saw the arrival of the last MGR wagon to be built at Shildon Wagon Works. MGR wagon HDA 368459 was built in 1982, and was the last new MGR wagon to be completed before Shildon Wagon Works closed in 1984. The movement of coal by rail in Britain was revo-lutionised in the 1960s through the introduction of new coal hoppers, called ‘Merry-Go-Round’ wagons.A train of ‘Merry-Go-Round’ wagons is able to load and unload its cargo while still moving – so maximising efficiency of the wagon fleet. When ‘Merry-Go-Round’ (or MGR) services were

first introduced, British Rail designed an all-new wagon with air brakes and the capacity to carry 33 tonnes of pulverised coal. The prototype was a 32-ton unit, built at Darlington and tested in 1964 – and recently cosmetically restored at the NRM Conservation Workshop at Locomotion. After the closure of Darlington Works in 1966, MGR wagon production continued at Shildon – and, with the exception of 160 wagons built at Ashford – all 10,702 HAA wagons and 460 HDA wagons were built in the town. Tony Attle, Education Officer at Locomotion said, “Coal wagons have a long history of being made in Shildon, with over 150 years of coal transporta-tion out of the town. “Merry-Go-Round wagons are an important example of this, and they are still many in use today. “The display of this wagon at Locomotion is

an important addition to the collections here. It represents the achieve-ments made at Shildon Wagon Works and the important role that Shildon played as a railway town.“But we need more infor-mation from people who worked in the industry to interpret this object. We hope that people will help us achieve this by coming forward with their stories and memories”. The project to interpret the MGR wagon has been funded through Local Elected Member, Councillor Brian Stephens’ Neighbourhood Budget.MGR wagon, HAD 368459 was bought by the North East Branch of the 'Friends of the National Railway Museum' for display at Locomotion. To contact Locomotion about the project call Tony Attle, Education Officer on 01388 771444 or email [email protected].

In a tough cup draw Shildon Grey Horse were drawn away to Grindon in a match that they needed to win to stop their worst run since the club formed back in 2006.Manager Dougie Grant had the added complication of the late withdrawal of their regular keeper, Ian Shepherd. Therefore outfield player and new to the team this season, Dave Gillies was called upon to take over in goal. The early exchanges were even with both sides playing some nice football. The Grey Horse took the lead after 20 minutes. A well worked goal down the left flank resulted in a fine cross being met in the penalty area by Malcolm Anderson, who made no mistake from 10 yards out.Grindon responded positively and, after a period of pressure, they equalised when slack marking at the back post saw their forward head in unchallenged to give a 1-1 half-time score line. The Grey Horse started the second half well and a

Shildon AFC were knocked out of the F.A. Cup on Wednesday 21st September, when they travelled to Ashington. They lost 5-3 on penalties after the score remained 2–2 in extra time. The teams had played a goal-less draw on Saturday 17th September at Dean Street. Despite Shildon dominating the game, they couldn't capitalise on their superiority and failed to score.Ashington started far better than they did a few days earlier, creating chances within the first 8 minutes. Number 9 Jamie Clark's 30 yarder went right across the goal, while Jonathon Godsmark just missed and Chris Fawcett fired over.On 16 minutes Ashington's Andrew Johnson was clean through but Keith Finch made a great block save.On 20 minutes Ross Gardner was deemed to have tripped Andrew Johnson in the box and Ashington were awarded a penalty, which Jamie Clarke converted.Near half-time Wayne Gredziak missed a sitter, heading over from 6 yards.

Half Time: Ashington 1 Shildon 0.Shortly after the restart Ashington were awarded another doubtful penalty, with nearly everyone in the ground having no idea why it was given. Evidently it was a hand ball by Justin Keegan.Up stepped Jamie Clarke again, to make it 2 – 0 on 49 minutes.Shildon responded in the best possible way by scoring 2 minutes later when a John Toft corner was headed home by Wayne Gredziak.Shildon stepped up the pressure and justifiably equalised when Gredziak beat two defenders and found Chris Hughes who drove the ball into the bottom corner. With 5 minutes remaining, Ashington's Gareth Bainbridge hit the post.Shildon had two clear claims for a penalty turned down, when both Warren Byrne and Wayne Gredziak were hacked down in the box. Referee inconsistencies. Full Time: Ashington 2 Shildon 2.In extra time the game was held up for 6 minutes when Gareth Bainbridge

was stretched off with a bad shoulder injury.Shildon had Ashington on the back foot and had corner after corner but couldn't find the killer punch. Ashington's ten men were defending for their lives with every player in their own penalty area.Somehow they survived, and it went to a penalty shoot out which Ashington won 5 – 3.Shildon were the best side and should have won this tie. They were robbed by bad refereeing, coupled with not taking their chances. The next game is now on the evening of Friday 23rd September, not Saturday, when they travel to Tow Law Town in the F.A. Vase 2nd Round Qualifying. The following Wednesday, 28th September, they are at home in the league against Guisborough Town. The next meeting of the Shildon Supporters Club will be held in the club-house on Sunday 25th September at 11.30am.Everyone is welcome, old and new members. “Please come along and support your team,” said a spokesperson.

Shildon bow out after loosing replay

few chances were created without the finish that some of the moves deserved.Stand in keeper Gillies had very little to do as the defences seemed to get on top in a very entertaining cup tie.A couple of substitutions on the hour with the introduc-tion of Harry Thompson and Adrian Gough brought fresh impetus to the Grey Horse side as they started to get on top.Gough looked to have won it with 5 minutes remaining, but his point blank header hit the keeper on the line and the home side scrambled the ball away. With the game looking to be heading for extra time, a final thrust from the Grey Horse saw a deep cross from the right go over the Grindon keeper where man-of-the-match Mel Douglas was on-hand to head the ball home and give manager Dougie Grant and the Shildon side a well-deserved 2-1 victory. The next game is away to top-of-the-table Holywell Fat Ox.
