Crusade
Crusade Was war between Christians and the Muslims The wars were over a land called the Holy
Land This land was Jerusalem and other places in
Palestine
The First Crusades
The First Crusade was started when the Byzantine emperor asked Pope Urban II for knights to fight the Muslims Turks.
At the Council of Clermont in 1095 Pope Urban called Bishops and nobles to action.
Pope Urban called for a crusade to free the Holy Land because God said so.
First Crusade was a religious war.

Stop infighting amongst Christianity Increase his power.

There were 8 other crusades after the first one. There were not successful in at all Happened over the next 200 years. Muslims finally drove the Christians out in

Left a bitter hatred between the Muslims and the Christians.
Helped to create a money economy Created trade routes to the Middle East Incresed the power of the Monarchs Increased the power of the Pope
The Reconquista
Reconquista Campaign to retake lands in Spain from the
Muslims who took it. Took the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella
and 400 years to retake Spain.
Inquisition
Inquisition A church court set up to try people accused of
heresy. Jews and Muslims had to covert to Christianity.
If they didn’t they could be tried and killed. This united the country but drove many of the
skilled workers out of the country.
