Understanding Meaning and Importance of Competency Based Assessment


What is Assessment?

• Assessment is the systematic gathering of information about what students know and are able to do.

• It involves collection of evidence, and then making judgements about what that evidence means.


Formative and Summative Assessments

• Formative assessment refers to constructive feedback given to the students while they are actually undergoing learning so as to effect improvement

• Summative assessment is used to measure the extent of learning that

• has taken place at the end of a course or a part of a course.

• Diagnostic assessment is used to help students identify areas of strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential abilities

• Recognise knowledge, understanding, skills and attributes gained

• Measure progress along a learning path

Principles of Assessment

• Purpose needs to be clear• Aligned with the objectives• Methodology needs to be ‘valid’ and

flexible • Procedure and instruments needs to

be ‘reliable’.• Needs to be transparent.• Amount of assessment should be

sufficient.


Assessment

• Validity - Will it measure what you intend it to measure?

• Reliability - Will your assessment produce consistent results?

• Practicality – Will it be feasible?• Manageable

Assessment tools

Student Portfolio

• A student portfolio is like a logbook. It is a way of recording evidence of the student’s achievements.

• It is a collection of different items of evidence, which indicates that the student has the required skills, knowledge and understanding to support the claim to qualifications.


Components of Student Portfolio

3. Contents checklist Checklist as the student works their way through their portfolio.

4. Unit assessment plan

Plan should define the tasks to be carried out, how long the tasks will take and the evidence that will be generated.

5. Unit progress and signoff record

Progress of the student is monitored and signed by the teacher/trainer

6. Achievement record

Successful in achieving the required level of competence for individual outcomes.


Role of Assessor

• Check that the assessment procedure is valid for assessment of knowledge, skill and ability of the candidate at that level.

• Assess the competencies of the candidate based on list of relevant competencies as shown on the Assessment Sheet.

• Assess whether each criterion has been met

• Submit record of the results in the assessment form


Summary

Knowledge is best tested by oral and written test

Skills are best tested by performance test

Attitudes are best tested by observation of performance or questionnaire.
