What is Assessment?

• Assessment is the systematic gathering of information about what students know and are able to do.

• It involves collection of evidence, and then making judgements about what that evidence means.

Formative and Summative Assessments

• Formative assessment refers to constructive feedback given to the students while they are actually undergoing learning so as to effect improvement

• Summative assessment is used to measure the extent of learning that

• has taken place at the end of a course or a part of a course.

• Diagnostic assessment is used to help students identify areas of strengths and weaknesses, as well as potential abilities

Principles of Assessment

• Purpose needs to be clear• Aligned with the objectives• Methodology needs to be ‘valid’ and

flexible • Procedure and instruments needs to

be ‘reliable’.• Needs to be transparent.• Amount of assessment should be

sufficient.

Student Portfolio

• A student portfolio is like a logbook. It is a way of recording evidence of the student’s achievements.

• It is a collection of different items of evidence, which indicates that the student has the required skills, knowledge and understanding to support the claim to qualifications.

Components of Student Portfolio

1. Portfolio title page

Student details and the units they have included in their portfolio.

2. Personal profile Student personal details and details of their work environment.

3. Contents checklist Checklist as the student works their way through their portfolio.

4. Unit assessment plan

Plan should define the tasks to be carried out, how long the tasks will take and the evidence that will be generated.

5. Unit progress and signoff record

Progress of the student is monitored and signed by the teacher/trainer

6. Achievement record

Successful in achieving the required level of competence for individual outcomes.

Role of Assessor

• Check that the assessment procedure is valid for assessment of knowledge, skill and ability of the candidate at that level.

• Assess the competencies of the candidate based on list of relevant competencies as shown on the Assessment Sheet.

• Assess whether each criterion has been met

• Submit record of the results in the assessment form
