Chapter 1. Analytics that everyone can use to answer keybusiness questions
Organizations need to make the most of a workforce that is increasingly driven tomulti-task, network, and collaborate. IBM Cognos Business Intelligence deliversanalytics that everyone can use to answer key business questions.
Easily view, assemble, and personalize information
Business users often do not know how to access the information that they need, and the available tools might not provide the freedom to combine and exploreinformation in the way they want. IBM Cognos Business Intelligence providesfeatures that allow business users to easily view, assemble, and personalizeinformation to follow a train of thought and generate a unique perspective. Usinga single place to quickly see a view of their business, users can quickly personalizecontent, build on the insights of others, and incorporate data from various sources. These capabilities ensure that more people are engaged in providing uniqueinsights and delivering faster business decisions. Giving business users greaterself-service control reduces demands on IT and business intelligence systems.
Explore all types of information
If a separate tool is required, it is difficult to incorporate statistical results with corebusiness reporting. IBM Cognos BI allows business users to consume fact-basedstatistical evidence to support key decisions directly in the IBM Cognos BIenvironment. The ability to explore all types of information from all angles toassess the current business situation provides a deeper understanding of thepatterns that exist in data. This allows business users to quickly deliver reportsthat include statistical insight and validation, and distribute these reports to thelarger business community.
Analyze facts and anticipate strategic implications
Business users need tools that let them accurately evaluate and identify the impactthat different scenarios will have on the business and on the bottom line. IBMCognos BI allows the business user to analyze facts and anticipate strategicimplications by simply shifting from viewing data to performing more advancedpredictive or what-if analysis. Understanding the scenarios that affect businessenables the business user to make informed recommendations to the business andprovides an increased competitive advantage.

IBM Cognos Theme Designer provides a graphical user interface that makes it easyto tailor IBM Cognos BI applications to your brand requirements. You can replaceimages, change colors, or edit html to get the look you want. You can producemultiple themes for users to choose from, or different themes for each tenant orapplication in multiple tenant environments.
In addition to existing support for Cognos Theme Designer by IBM CognosConnection and IBM Cognos Viewer, this version adds support by IBM CognosWorkspace.
To download Cognos Theme Designer and its documentation, go to IBM CognosTheme Designer Tool for IBM Cognos 10.2.1 and 10.2.1.1 (www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&uid=swg24035533).
Filtering on multiple related data items in select value filterand slider filter widgets
In select value filter and slider filter widgets, you can filter on multiple relateddata items from different reports. For example, you have a report on yourworkspace that has a Years data item and another report that has a Years_1 dataitem, but both refer to the same data. You can filter on both data items together.
Automatically refresh filter values in slider and select valuecontrols
In previous versions, values in slider filter and select value filter widgets were notrefreshed when data was refreshed in their corresponding source report widgets.
Chapter 1. Analytics that everyone can use to answer key business questions 3
Now you can automatically refresh values in slider filter and select value filterwidgets whenever data is refreshed in their corresponding source report widgets. This is especially convenient for source report widgets that are updated frequently.
Automatic chart recommendation
In the widget toolbar, you can click Change Display Type
to automatically getthe best display type for the data. IBM Cognos Workspace analyses the data andproduces the most suitable display type.
The Change Display Type drop-down list in the widget toolbar lists up to five ofthe most highly recommended display types. The Change Display window liststhe recommended display types in order and explains why each one isrecommended.
To see the original interface, which lists all available display types whether theyare recommended or not, click the All tab in the Change Display window.
Tabbed workspacesWith tabbed workspaces, you can organize content on multiple tabs in a singleworkspace. Typically, each tab contains information about a particular area.
For example, you create a workspace with separate tabs for Marketing, Sales, andRevenue.
Global area in tabbed workspacesA tabbed workspace includes an area that is common to all tabs in the workspace. Here you can keep any object in view as you click though the tabs in theworkspace.
For example, you created a workspace with separate tabs for Marketing, Sales, andRevenue. You add a Region filter to the global area so that you can filter onregions as you click through the tabs.
Chart interactionYou can select a chart or one or more parts of a chart and apply actions. Forexample, you can filter the chart contents.
Freeze column and row headingsYou can freeze column and row headings in lists and crosstabs. Freezing theheadings keeps them in view as you scroll through the data.
Viewing column and row heading detailsIn a crosstab, you can expand a column or row heading to view the details thatmake up the data.
For example, you expand a region heading to display the cities in that region.
Printing a workspaceThe print preview feature in a web browser enables you to adjust settings such asscaling and orientation to make your workspace fit on a printed page.

Import of Framework Manager packages into Cognos CubeDesigner
You can import the Framework Manager packages that contain your dimensionallymodeled relational (DMR) and relational models into Cognos Cube Designer anduse the metadata in the packages to create dynamic cubes. Regardless of what theFramework Manager model contains, the metadata from the model that is used tocreate a dynamic cube must represent a star or snowflake schema.
You can import only packages that are published to the IBM Cognos BI contentstore. Packages that are saved on a disk cannot be imported.
This functionality allows you to leverage your existing IBM Cognos BI modelinginvestment when you implement dynamic cubes. Additional modeling is requiredafter the Framework Manager package is imported into Cognos Cube Designer. The reports that are based on a DMR model are not migrated to the dynamic cubemodel that is based on the DMR model.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Parameter maps
Use parameter maps to substitute settings when a report is run. You can createparameter maps manually, import them from a file, or use an existing query itemin the model as the key-value pair for the parameter map.
In dynamic cubes, the parameterization is resolved at cube start-up time.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Automatic optimization of in-memory aggregates
The in-memory aggregates are automatically improved in response to the reportqueries.
The functionality minimizes the number of manual Aggregate Advisor runs, reduces the need to generate comprehensive workload logs, and improves reportperformance by adjusting the set of in-memory aggregates over time to bettermatch the query activity.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Memory utilization improvements for dynamic cubes
Dynamic cubes now use memory more efficiently.
18 New Features
The following memory utilization improvements were implemented:v Dimension members can now be optionally shared between dynamic cubes and
virtual cubes that reside on the same server to reduce the overall memoryfootprint.
v The size of the member cache has been reduced and requires approximately 550bytes per member.
v The query service now recognizes when the JVM heap is nearly full andattempts to release resources from in-memory caches to avoid out of memoryexceptions.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Hardware sizing calculator
This calculator facilitates quick, initial estimation of hardware resources that areneeded to support a dynamic cube. The estimates are based on the two largestdimensions in the cube and the number of concurrent queries per report. Thecalculated output gives the required memory size, number of processor cores, andthe amount of hard disk space that is needed to support the cube.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.

For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Near real-time updates of dynamic cubes data
With near real-time updates, data can be inserted into fact and aggregate tables inthe data warehouse without stopping dynamic cubes. Dynamic cubes can consumethe inserted new records immediately and IBM Cognos BI queries return consistentdata. The data caches are updated and not rebuilt.
Chapter 3. Platform enhancements to simplify and cost-effectively scale enterprise analytics 19
In previous versions of IBM Cognos Business Intelligence, to maintain consistentdata values between the fact tables, aggregate tables, and data caches in a runningdynamic cube, it was necessary to stop the cube before you could apply anychanges to the data warehouse. This step was required to change the data valuesin the data warehouse tables during the execution of end user business intelligence(BI) queries. When the update was complete, it was necessary to restart the cube inorder to rebuild the data caches to reflect the new table values.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
No need to restart cubes when enabling or disabling workloadlogging
The dynamic cube property Enable workload logging enables or disablesworkload logging.
When this property is enabled, the workload log file captures the information thatrepresents user workload usage, such as running reports. This log file allowsAggregate Advisor to suggest aggregates, in-database or in-memory, thatcorrespond directly to the reports contained in the log file. You do not need torestart the dynamic cube for this property change to take effect.
For more information, see the IBM Cognos Dynamic Cubes User Guide.
Packages for more than one cube
You can now publish a package containing more than one cube. A package cancontain dynamic cubes, virtual cubes, namespaces, and folders
