SERVING AT CHRISTMAS
December Reflection
A friend was telling me that the first time she walked into
her house, when it was for sale, she pointed to a spot and
said “this is the house and that is where the Christmas tree
is going to go.” But for me, when I think of all the places I
have lived, I have always had to make room for the
Christmas tree…carry some furniture to another room
temporarily, move some plants around and make sure the
tree was not too close to the fireplace. But once the tree is
up, it is always worth it the soft glow of the lights, the evergreens, the ornaments all with a story of their
own, marking our marriage, the kids’ first Christmases, special trips and favorite things. The beauty of the
tree also makes it easy to reflect on the spiritual meaning of Christmas putting up the tree is a liturgy of
sorts, a ritual work and remembrance of how Christ is the light in the darkness and God’s love for us never
ends like the evergreen and our very own history wrapped up in this mystery!
Just like we need to make room for the Christmas tree, we do need to make room for Christ in our lives, not
only at this time of the year, but always. We need to make sure that we make room for God’s love in our
own lives and in our communities, so that God can shower us again and again with the love that even made
God one of us. Making room for Christ is not just one other responsibility during this time, or another thing
on our todo lists, but is at the very heart of this season of Advent. And it does not necessarily mean we get
rid of the other things, but maybe we need to move things around a bit for a little while, or we choose one or
two things to do this Advent that helps us center on Christ’s presence in our lives and our communal longing
for Christ to come again.
Our first readings during Advent come from 4 different
prophets in the Old Testament: Jeremiah, Baruch, Zephaniah,
and Micah. They are filled with the longing and hope for the
Messiah for a time when all the suffering and hardships of
the Israelites will be vindicated with glory and peace and the
promises of one to come to make it all right. As we enter each
week of Advent deeper into our own longing and need for
Christ, let us reflect on this communal hope of our tradition,
the joy it offers us and the very foundation for all our
Christmas celebrations the One who was, who is and who is
to come. And as we grow confident in the promises of God, as
we ensure ample space for God’s love in our lives, may we
proclaim wholeheartedly, “this is the house and this is the
place” for Christ to be in our lives and in our hearts.

Stewardship Update for November 30, 2018
In an effort to keep you better informed of the
parish’s operating performance, we will be
periodically sharing with you items of financial
significance, with additional updates on a quarterly
basis.
For the first 5 months of our current fiscal year (July
November), our offertory collections were $20,470
below budget. Overall revenue was $16,000 under
budget, while total expenses were $62,685 under
budget. Some of our larger expenditures to date have
included $6,000 for HVAC and chiller repairs and
$42,250 for utility expenses (electricity, gas, water/
sewer, and trash pickup).
Significant expenditures planned in the upcoming
month include lighting upgrades in the church, PLC
and parking lots. All light fixtures in the church and
PLC are in the process of being upgraded to LED to
reduce our ongoing electricity costs. While the cost
of the transition to LED will be $15,000, we
anticipate saving over $30,000 due to a City of
Austin rebate program. Our oak trees will undergo
trimming and pruning to improve parking lot
lighting and visibility for the safety of our
parishioners at an estimated cost of $3,000. This
work is expected to be completed in December.
The above are just a few items of significance. We
welcome your questions and comments regarding
the parish’s financial plan. We are committed to
ensure that the donations you entrust to our
stewardship are used prudently and responsibly.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS CAMPAIGN?

Chapel Life Center at Queen of Angels will include a Great
Hall, kitchen, a couple of classrooms and outdoor space.

HOW WILL THESE BUILDINGS SERVE OUR PARISH?
Currently we have an 1800 sq. ft. 60+ year old building housing thirteen
staff offices and two portable buildings, one of which has six staff offices.
The other portable is used for ministry meetings, AA, AlAnon, Welcome
Retreats and more.

The City of Lakeway requires us to remove the portable buildings by June
2021. The new Pastoral Center, to be located in this area, will allow all staff to work in the same building
increasing communication and collaboration (second floor). The first floor of this building will offer:
 additional meeting spaces,
a communication center with computers for classes and those in need for school or job searching,
a media room to allow for podcasts from our priests and staff making classes more accessible to the
homebound or travelers, (this is becoming more in demand at churches)
and small conference rooms for our Deacons to have space for meetings and spiritual direction.

The Chapel Life Center at Queen of Angels offers expanded space for after mass activities, special events and
funeral receptions. Welcome Retreats, currently held in our portable buildings, will be able to use this
center. In addition, there are spaces for classes, day retreats and conferences. The CLCenter will also offer a
source of revenue from outside groups renting it for receptions, gatherings and other activities.

HOW MUCH IS THIS GOING TO COST?
We began this campaign in October 2016. After two years, we have donations totaling $2.1M in hand. Our
goal is to reach $3M within the next year. Project costs for the Pastoral Center and the CLCenter are
estimated at $4M. We are determined to keep these projects in budget to the best of our ability, providing
spaces that are functional while minimizing future maintenance costs. Our current fund total is the result of
478 generous families. We are in need of our remaining 1700 families to participate to help us achieve this
goal. We appreciate your prayerful consideration.

HOW CAN I GIVE TO THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN?
Donating cash is as simple as writing a check, paying from your smartphone or computer, authorizing a
charge on your debit or credit card, or automatic checking/savings withdrawals through egiving or your
bank’s bill pay service. Please go online or call the office for information: www.EmmausParish.org/egiving.

IRA Charitable Rollover: For our parishioners who are 70½ or older, up to $100,000 of your yearly required
minimum distribution can be transferred from your IRA directly to Emmaus without having to include the
amount transferred as taxable income, while having it count toward your required minimum distribution.

Charitable Gifts of Securities: Stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have been held for at least one year and
have appreciated in value offer special tax advantages. You can receive a tax deduction for the full market
value of the gift, but not have to pay capital gains tax on the appreciated amount. Consult with your personal
financial or legal advisors to determine what would best benefit you and your philanthropic goals.
