INTRODUCTION 8:10 a.m. - 8:20 a.m. Workshop #1 8:25 a.m. – 9:55 a.m. An Introduction to the Depth & Complexity Prompts and their Icons Bonnecarrere C110 Using Depth and Complexity to differentiate curriculum and instructional practices is a proven way to create challenging learning experiences for all students, including the G/T population. Explore interactive, classroom-tested procedures for introducing the Depth and Complexity Dimensions and their related Icon. Leave this session ready to incorporate Depth and Complexity when school begins. High-Level, Differentiated Questioning with Depth & Complexity Icons Voss C106 Explore and create varied levels of questions using the Depth & Complexity Icons. Write a number of questions related to your own grade-level content with open-ended questions stems that promote complex, critical thinking. Guiding students towards the formation of appropriately challenging questions will empower them to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of content. I Know About Depth & Complexity. Now What? Sangdahl C103 Are you excited about Depth and Complexity but aren’t sure where to begin? This interactive workshop is designed to ease your anxiety and help you launch Depth and Complexity in your elementary classroom. Participants will be provided with strategies, tips, activities and student work samples – and an opportunity to collaborate. Increasing Engagement in Fiction and Nonfiction with D & C Heffley C120 Participate in learning opportunities that you can implement in your classroom tomorrow to engage all learners in fiction and nonfiction texts using Depth and Complexity. Participants will approach a variety of texts through the lens of Depth and Complexity to create a conceptual net of thinking. The elements of Depth and Complexity add a layer for readers that immediately increases rigor. Insert them into your lesson objectives to elicit abstract thinking from your students. A Deep and Complex Look at The Lorax Fitzgerald C105 Dr. Seuss is well known for his light and fun stories, but there is a much deeper side to his work. Join us as we take a deep and complex look at one of his most famous pieces; The Lorax. This workshop will shine a whole new light on how students can think more abstractly about this famous story. More importantly, it will provide a model for using any story while introducing and exploring the Depth & Complexity Dimensions with students.

Workshop #2 10:05 a.m. – 11:35 a.m. Research Projects with a Pinch of Depth & Complexity Makes All the Difference Bonnecarrere C110 Learn how to use Depth and Complexity Icons to broaden your students’ abilities to analyze and synthesize information. Research projects take on a new life when students explore topics through the various lenses of Depth & Complexity. Attendees will learn some effective research project techniques that will support them in organizing differentiated learning opportunities for students. Workshop #3 12:40 p.m. – 2:10 p.m. Raising the Bar: Teaching ELLs with Depth and Complexity Voss C106 Discover how to increase the rigor of instruction and provide ELLs with the opportunity to exhibit in-depth, complex thinking while also increasing achievement and proficiency in English. Examples of instruction which integrates both depth and complexity and second language acquisition will be shared, as well as student products in the Dual Language Classroom. Integrating Depth & Complexity in Math within the Elementary Classroom Sangdahl C103 Educators do not always see the connection between and value of using The Depth and Complexity Framework and Mathematics. This interactive workshop details seamless ways to incorporate Depth and Complexity into the elementary math content and lessons – yes, math lessons. Participants will be provided an opportunity to see student products, gain ideas, and collaborate with others to extend their students' thinking in mathematics. Using the Depth & Complexity Math Icons Heffley C120 Explore using the Math Icons to transform student tasks. Investigate each iconic prompt and its relationship to math curriculum, thinking tasks and mathematical practices. Learn from other teachers' implementation techniques and apply these strategies to your own curriculum. The Math Icons add a layer to curriculum and instruction that immediately increases engagement and excitement. Practice ways to use the Math Icons and benefit learning in your classroom. The Depth & Complexity Triangle Fitzgerald C105 After being introduced and dabbling with Depth and Complexity in my room, I looked for low-prep, easy-to-implement activity that challenged all of my students using the Framework. I never found what I was looking for…so I created my own! Introducing the Depth & Complexity Triangle. This simple activity will have your students thinking in deep, complex ways while rubbing their heads as they experience “The Brain Pain.”

Workshop #4 2:15 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. The Next Step: Iconic Combinations and Pathways Bonnecarrere C110 Participants who were previously or are now familiar with the Icons of Depth and Complexity will explore using these lenses in combination, or with the Content Imperatives, to produce deeper, abstract thinking. Iconic Combinations and pathways provide valuable, different perspectives and can instantly increase rigor within a learning task for students at all learning levels. Examples will be shared and time will be allotted for participants to explore these pairings in their own area of instruction. Raising the Bar: Teaching ELLs with Depth and Complexity Voss C106 Discover how to increase the rigor of instruction and provide ELLs with the opportunity to exhibit in-depth, complex thinking while also increasing achievement and proficiency in English.
