"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the

beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into

being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines

in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.... The true light, which enlightens everyone, was

coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world

did not know him.... But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become

children of God.... And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory

as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth." John 1:1-14

My Dear Friends,

It is with these beautiful and profound words of poetry that the Gospel of John begins, and so too our journey

of Advent. We come to celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ, Immanuel, God who is with us. As John tells

us, God's Word, which spoke forth the power of creation, is born intimately and vulnerably into the business

of our everyday lives. The very light of life shines in the midst of the darkness, calling forth hope, peace,

joy, and love.

As together we begin our Advent journey toward the celebration of Christmas, my prayer for each of you is

that the light of grace and truth that is Christ the Lord, so fills you that you can not help but share the beauty

and wonder of the light of God with others.

Shalom,

Pastor Kevin

Christmas, 2013

The swirls of soft snow,

The frost on the trees,

The ghost misty gowns,

That gleam on the ground- and freeze.

Look at the pristine view

of the landscape we love.

It reminds us of Angels,

all sparkly and white

that fluttered down thru out the nite.

And from the midnight sky - a slice of moon

is ready to catch the evening stars 'tears

that is shed in compassion for human fears.

How little we really know.

So GOD sent us Jesus to tell his stories

of how to live in this world of worries.

All in the heavens and nature sings

of this wonderful message that HE brings.

In the darkening days of December

with snow swirling round its feet,

We think of friends to remember

and all of the families to greet.

Splurge of emotions run sky high,

in anticipation of celebration of

happy gatherings, or very sad

for loved ones now gone...and sigh.

We think of what the future brings

Our children's tomorrows and Cyber Space.

But "PRAISE YE THE LORD" earth still sings

with JESUS our master of the human race.

The Christ child's star will continue to

be a spiral of light birthing bright

Holy insight to plans that are made

like only GOD can when he releases

designs- in part to man.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS and

MANY GREAT NEW YEARS!

Gloria Hanson

The Tale of the Candy Cane

The stripes remind us of the heart of

Christmas, our Savior, Jesus: white for

his purity; red for his blood shed on the

cross. The candy cane resembles the

curved staffs of the shepherds — the first people to

visit the Christ-Child and worship at the manger.

And when the cane is turned upside down, it be-

comes a letter J, for “Jesus.”

Indeed, Jesus turns our lives upside down and in-

verts our presumptions: A poor baby born in a sta-

ble becomes King of kings and Lord of lords; ene-

mies aren’t for hating but loving; blessings aren’t

for hoarding but sharing; the world works for war,

but Jesus calls us to live in peace; receiving is bet-

ter than giving; sinners are made saints; and death

is conquered as God grants us eternal life.

What a wonderful turn-out

on Consecration Sunday!

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend! We

had great attendance at both worship services, and

the Celebration Luncheon and “Trunk or Treat”

added extra special fun for kids and adults. Conse-

cration Sunday and the Celebration Luncheon are

continuing to grow into a signature day of our wor-

ship calendar. It is a great opportunity to bring the

whole church into worship together and see some

old friends and new faces.

If you weren't able to turn in your Estimate of Giv-

ing card yet, there is still time to do so. Either mail

it to the church or drop it in the Finance Committee

mail box. Thanks for everyone's commitment to the

church through their pledge of giving. Based on

pledges received, giving will continue growing in

2014 which will enable the ongoing growth of

Grace Church.

For those who may have missed it, here again is my bio from last month's Grace Notes:

I'm so excited to begin working as Director of Youth Ministries! I found my passion for youth ministry after I

completed a year-long internship at Nativity Episcopal Church just down the street from Grace. Afterward, I

worked full-time in youth ministry in Indiana for a year. I recently returned to Minnesota to be closer to family

and begin the process for ordination in the Episcopal Church. My educational background includes a Master of

Arts in Theology from St. Catherine University and a Diploma in Anglican Studies from the General Theological

Seminary in NYC. I am a newlywed and will be living with my husband Cory in St. Paul. I look forward to getting

to know each of the youth and great folks at Grace!

Let’s Support Our Troops!

Send a card to a services person at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center &

Ramstein AFB in Germany. There is no way to know if your card will go to

a male or female in the service, so please be rather generic with your writing.

Our deadline is December 8th. Please DO NOT SEAL the envelopes.

Your card provides comfort and encouragement to our troops and their family

members.

Volunteers Needed to help keep our sidewalks clear!

If you need to shovel your walk at home, chances are the church

needs clearing too—so put this on your “to do” list and help keep

our sidewalks safe. Shovels are at the church, but you might like

your own better. For heavy, serious snow we have a snow blower and you can

contact Gordy Peters for information, 952-435-6189.

One of the decorations in the Gathering Area during the holiday

season is a Giving Tree. A “wish list” of needs for our church

has been gathered and listed on ornaments that decorate the tree.

If you would like to give something extra to Grace this Christmas

season, just take an ornament from the tree with the item you in-

tend to give. When your gift is complete, simply place it under the tree.

Items on the tree include supplies for our education area, church office, kitch-

en, program needs and other building items. Your gift is greatly appreciated!

Grace Mission Outreach will be sponsoring two families

with “Armful of Love” for Christmas. Church members

may participate by purchasing a gift or donating money.

Purchases need to be at Grace UMC no later than December 8th. Outreach

members will be available to assist between services.

Thank you for your consideration to help those in need.
