This haul of alcohol was taken from underage drinkers in Ferryhill and Bishop Auckland.

Police seize alcohol from Ferryhill youths

Police have seized alcohol from underage drinkers.Officers targeted underage drinkers in two County Durham towns on Friday 25th August. The ‘Stay Safe’ opera-tion, in partnership with Trading Standards and the Fire Service, saw officers from Durham Constabulary carry out patrols in Bishop Auckland and Ferryhill. They confiscated booze which included wine, cider, vodka and lager from a group of about 50 young-sters in Ferryhill.Acting Inspector, Mick Urwin, from Durham Con-stabulary, said: “Stay Safe is an integral part of the partnership work carried out to tackle underage drinking and the issues that come with it.“Our main focus is to protect young people who are at risk if they drink alcohol to excess, when they can become victims of crime or suffer injury.“We know that young people will drink out of the way, for example by a

river or in an isolated area, which leaves them vulner-able.“The environmental impact is then felt by the local community using these areas in the days after, where litter, bottles and damage to grass is left by youths gathering.”The Stay Safe operation runs at regular intervals throughout the year to deal with concerns raised by communities about young people drinking and causing anti-social behaviour.Insp Urwin added: “Those over 18 must be aware that if we find that alcohol has been supplied to underage drinkers then we will issue penalty notices of £90 or if it is persistent, they can be taken to court and given an unlimited fine.”The operation took place under Durham Constabu-lary’s larger project, Operation ARIES, which is currently focused in Bishop Auckland.

Operation ARIES involves police, Durham County Council and local off-licences and aims to reduce anti-social behaviour and low level crime.Giving his support, Ron Hogg, Durham’s Police, Crime and Victims’ Com-missioner, said; “Tackling the harm caused by alcohol and drugs is a clear priority, based on what local people have said to me. I have set this objective for the Chief Constable in my Police, Crime and Victims’ Plan.“The knock-on effects of under-age drinking to indi-viduals and local communi-ties can be severe and this force-wide approach should bring positive changes in attitudes and behaviour for all concerned.”Anyone with information about underage drinking is encouraged to contact Operation ARIES via [email protected] or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Darlington Video Makers are a group whose mission is to help, support and encourage each other in all aspects of making videos, in a friendly environment.

Darlington movie makers on the move!

A group of movie makers established in Darling-ton for over 50 years have now moved their headquarters to Aycliffe Village. The members of Darling-ton Video Makers Club all have at least one thing in common – they love making movies.Ivor Rose, Chairman said; “We cover a large area and welcome new members who are happy to travel to our regular meetings. We are very pleased with our new premises at the Great Aycliffe Village Hall where we meet every Tuesday at 7pm. We now have much more room to operate, excellent facili-ties and all at a reason-able rent.”Members make videos as individuals but quite often get together to make something more ambitious. Categories

covered are too numerous to mention, but as an example, range from comedies and stories (some with actors) to documentaries, history, family holidays and local events. For those who wish to, there are competitions to enter within the club, as well as regionally and nationally.“If you think that the world of amateur film making may be of interest to you,” says Arthur Best, club visitor contact, “and if you wish to find out more about us, please give me a ring on 0191 548 2721 or visit our website darlingtoncc.weebly.com.” Arthur added; “I enjoy being a member so much I travel every week from my home in Sunderland.“Darlington Video Makers

are a group whose mission is to help, support and encourage each other in all aspects of making videos, in a friendly en-vironment. So anyone interested is welcome to make contact. Ask about our free taster sessions on our club nights.”Noel Bennett one of the club’s newest members said; “I joined just a few months ago as a complete beginner. I found everyone to be very friendly and helpful and I have since made and edited three short films.” You may be a new starter with a smart phone, very experienced with top of the range equipment or somewhere in between. All are welcome. The club holds training sessions about video techniques and also on how to edit your films.

Once again Chilton Commu-nity Sports and Social Club will be hosting a coffee morning on Thursday 28th September, from 10.30am, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. Everyone is welcome to go along and enjoy cake, coffee/tea and a

chance to catch up with friends, whilst supporting this worthwhile cause. A spokesperson said, “It is hoped that we will top last year’s amount of £1,000. There will be a raffle and a tombola, anyone who would like to donate either for the raffle or tombola can drop items off at the Club.”

Households who accumu-late extra waste while the changes are being rolled out should put it in a bag and leave it next to their rubbish bin for collection on their new day. Waste left next to rubbish bins after 20th October will not be col-lected. Surplus recyclable materi-als should be put in clear bags only and left next to recycling bins on new col-lection days. Black bags are assumed to contain waste and therefore not picked up in recycling collections.Oliver Sherratt, the council’s head of direct services, said: “We are continuing to streamline our rubbish and recycling collection routes to make them more efficient. “Previous changes to routes in other parts of the county have worked well and resi-dents have adapted to their new arrangements with ease.“We will be supporting residents in Sedgefield, Teesdale and Wear Valley to ensure these changes go through smoothly.“All affected households will be written to directly to explain the change to their

Changes to bin days from October

collection arrangements.”Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships, added: “We appreciate bin collection changes may cause some small inconven-ience in the short term as residents adapt to new bin days or collection weeks.“I’d encourage residents to read their letters and calen-dars carefully so they know which day to put their bins out.“Those who are affected should put their bin out as usual, by 7am, on their normal collection day until the changes come in on 9th October.”Bin collection calendars can be downloaded elec-tronically. Residents should enter their house number and postcode into the ‘My Durham’ section of www.durham.gov.uk.Residents can find out about recycling, ordering of re-placement bins, reporting a missed collection or booking to have bulky waste picked up, online at www.durham.gov.uk/recycling.For locations and opening times of household waste recycling centres, visit www.durham.gov.uk/hwrc or call 03000 261 000.

Thank you to all the children who took part in the obstacle course to raise funds. Thanks to all who baked food and prepared food.

Thank you to all the shops and pubs in Fer-ryhill Village and the families of the resi-dents, staff and friends for attending and all donations of money prizes for the raffles and tombola.

We have more events in the future to bring the community together.

Once again, thank you to all.

Dear Editor,

How very fortunate we are to live in Fer-ryhill, where there are so many talented people of all ages.

In the last month many members of DIDO have seen a fantastic concert with Aryana and the young people from Enter CIC, who raised a lot of money for the Stroke Associa-tion.

We went to see Kynren for the second year running. 1500 volunteers put on an out-standing show, all to raise the profile of our area. “Brilliant”.

Then we saw a fabulous concert by Meg, John and Ferryhill’s very own choir, VIVO, who also raise money for good causes.

Last but not least, “When yesterday was young”, a free show performed at least 12 times by the wonderful young people of Enter CIC.

It was simply amazing, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. All of the young people who performed, the crew, Andrea, Paul and the team, not forgetting the volunteers, are a credit to us all.

Thank you to all of you,From a very lucky Ferryhill resident and spokesperson for DIDO.
