Landlords have finally pulled the plug on care home giant Southern Cross, with Tenlands Care Centre on Wood Lane, Ferryhill, being just one of the homes affected by the situation.Landlords of 250 of the 752 homes have agreed to take back the centres to run themselves, however it is as yet unclear as to whether Tenlands is among this number. The remaining 502 homes are caught up in negotiations with owners which could take months. The company’s financial crisis came to light earlier this year when they were faced with rising rent costs and lower fees. The company has now been forced to shut down after landlords refused to restructure rental agreements.Southern Cross said final details of the plan had yet to be settled, but all payments to trade creditors and staff are to

be kept up to help with the transition to new owners or operators and maintain continuity of care.Chief executive of the Dar-lington-based company, Jamie Buchan said, “My objective is to continue to provide excellent care to every resident and to manage the programme of transition professionally.”Daniel Smith, Chairman of the Southern Cross Landlords’ Committee tried to reassure residents and their families that the quality of care provided by the new landlords would remain high. He stated, “Unless you are an operator, the landlords are not getting involved in care delivery. Southern Cross are the current operators and the landlords will find new operators.“It is a highly regulated industry. So you cannot have an operator that does not pass a Care Quality Commission test.”

Chilton Library has three new adult displays. The first is a collection of Jeannie Johnson books, including Like an Evening Gone, which tells the story of the Strong family, who are wealthy, arrogant, decadent and ruthless. They have a string of sugar plantations in Barbados and a stately home near Bristol, and in one single night the actions of one generation alter the
family’s legacy forever. The second display is a selection of Debbie Macomber books, including Wednesdays at Four. The third display is a history collection, including books such as Outlaw by Angus Donald, which is described as a gripping, action-packed historical thriller that delves deep into the fas-cinating legend of Robin Hood.”

Police are asking motorists and members of the public to be vigilant and take pre-ventative measures to help combat thefts of catalytic converters from vehicles.Thieves have mainly targeted 4x4 vehicles and commercial vehicles where ground clearance makes it easier to access the catalytic converter.Several vehicles have been attacked in various locations throughout County Durham in the past few days, but often motorists don't become aware of the crime until they drive off in their
vehicle.People are encouraged to report any suspicious incidents to police. What may appear at first glance to be someone under a vehicle making a repair could well be a thief stealing a catalytic converter.Motorists are also encouraged to take some or all of the following measures to help protect their vehicle against this type of theft:Wherever possible park your vehicle in a locked garage or in an area where there is good levels of
street lighting.Park your vehicle in an area where CCTV is in operation and wherever possible use a 'Park Mark' approved car parkPurchase a catalytic converter protective sleeve available from various internet sitesHave your catalytic converter permanently marked with an identifica-tion number so it will be easier to trace if it is stolen.Anyone with any informa-tion about these thefts is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365.

Men stabbed dog with potato peeler & left it for deadTwo local men could be facing a jail term after causing a dog extreme suffering with their botched attempts to kill it.Andrew Painter, 32, and Kevin Varty, 43, tried to break the animal’s neck after it suffered a fractured leg in a road traffic accident. However when they failed to kill the lurcher, Painter then proceeded to stab it with a potato peeler. The dog was found on a grassy area in Ferryhill after a member of the
public alerted the RSPCA.It is now being re-homed after having its leg amputated.Painter, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the offence, admitted two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, while Varty admitted one count of the same charge.A third man, owner of the dog 18 year-old Kieran Wynn
of Willow Road, admitted failing to seek proper veterinary care and causing unnecessary suffering to the animal after it was hit by the car.Varty, of High Street, Ferryhill, and Painter, of Church Close, Kirk Merrington, will be sentenced on 1st August and were warned that they may be facing time in prison.

Police are trying to trace the owner of a car roof rack which was recovered during a recent operation targeting metal theft. The Operation Hansel metal theft team of the Road Policing Unit recently stopped a vehicle, arrested and gave a police caution to two males carrying scrap. On board their vehicle was a large roof rack which they admit to picking up in a side street in a small
village or town between Shildon and Peterlee, which was possibly West Cornforth.Police need to speak with the original owner of the aluminium, silver roof rack. Anyone with informa-tion is urged to contact Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 and ask for the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit at Spennymoor police station.

Four year 10 students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College recently experienced life at University first hand. The students, Nadine Berry, Lauren Gash, Hannah Littley and Kieran Hornsby, spent three days attending lectures at Edinburgh University and sampling

everything the city has to offer. During the sessions the students built rockets and robot components and tested their designs against students from other schools, culminating in a spectacular finale. On their return to school Nadine said that she had an amazing time meeting
new friends and taking part in new activities. This was reinforced by Kieran’s comments that he had a really good time seeing what University is like. All the students agreed this was a fantastic oppor-tunity and it has solidified their ambitions to attend University in the future.
The four students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College had a whale of a time at Edinburgh University.

A memorial bench has been placed at the entrance to King James I Academy in Bishop Auckland in remem-brance of ex-pupils Robert and Michael Winterbone, who recently passed away. Brothers Robert and Michael from Ferryhill, who
were former students at the school, both suffered from Muscular Dystrophy. “During their time at King James I they were an in-spiration to other students and took an active part in school life,” said a spokes-person for the school.

A leading cancer charity is asking people in Ferryhill and Chilton to help raise £8.5m to celebrate the 21st birthday of its biggest fundraising event.Macmillan Cancer Support wants locals to raise £58,000 from the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to contribute to the charity’s record-breaking fundrais-ing target. The event, launched in 1990, and has grown to become the charity’s largest fundraising event, generating millions to fund vital cancer services. Macmillan’s fundraiser for County Durham Michelle Muir is asking local people to help make this year’s event the biggest ever. Michelle said, “The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is always really popular, probably because it’s a really easy event to take part in.“This is the event’s 21st birthday and Macmillan’s 100th birthday so we are determined to raise money than ever and make this year’s coffee morning our biggest ever.”The idea behind the
Charity asks residents to make £8.5m fundraiser biggest ever
World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is that people hold their own coffee morning in their homes, work places or local community. They ask for donations in return for drinks and cakes and then pass on the proceeds to Macmillan.Michelle added, “Some people hold just a small event with friends, while others go all out and organise a big community party.“Every pound raised matters so we really hope even more people with sign up to hold a coffee morning this year.”Although the official World’s Biggest Coffee Morning day is Friday, September 30th,
Macmillan is happy for people to hold events on a day that suits them.Michelle added, “The great thing about this event is that you can put your own twist on it and make sure it works for you“You can hold your coffee morning whenever it suits you. We even have people who are holding their event at night and serving cocktails instead of coffee.”The money raised from the event will be used to fund Macmillan’s support services for people with cancer and their families. To find out more about the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning visit www.macmillan.org.uk/coffee or call 0845 602 1246.

Mayor presents flag to local veteran
Ben Hunter had never been in trouble before but a gambling addiction had left him in money difficulties and he was struggling to run his car. Egged on by some friends he then planned a series of offences which the District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates Court described as “border line professional”.
“Border line professional” The 19 year-old, of Aiden’s Walk, Ferryhill, stole regis-tration plates from vehicles and fixed them using elastic bands over his own registration plates. He then filled up his tank at several service stations and drove off without paying. Hunter pleaded guilty to four charges and asked for six others to be taken into consideration.
The court heard that his parents had now taken charge of his financial affairs and that he had disassociated himself from those who had encouraged him to commit the offences. Hunter will serve a 12 month community order and complete 40 hours of unpaid work as well as paying £326.66 in compensation.

Kevin Alex Dagga will appear at Durham Crown Court on 3rd August after the District Judge released him from Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court on unconditional bail. The 29 year-old of Lime Road, Ferryhill, had earlier pleaded guilty to assaulting a man, occa-sioning him actual bodily harm. The court was shown CCTV footage of the incident, which occurred in a take-away in Ferryhill
at around 2.20am on 18th December last year. The victim was seen at the head of the queue and, as he took possession of his food, (with his arms full and unable to protect himself)he was head butted and then wrestled to the floor by Dagga. Police attended and the victim was taken to Accident and Emergency but later discharged himself. It became apparent the next day, however, that his injuries
needed further attention. He had several stitches and an operation to his upper lip and as a result will be left with a permanent scar. The court heard that Dagga had relevant previous con-victions and had indeed been imprisoned for two years in 2004. The District Judge commented that this was an unprovoked sustained attack in which several blows had been rained down upon the victim.
