1. This regulation covers the vehicle i n i t s basic role of passenger or cargo car ry ing and i n i ts F.F.W. role. I n the basic role, the vehicle i s capable of accomoda.ti ing three passengers and driver, or the driver and a 5 cwt load. It is required also t o tow a laden 1/2 ton, 2-wheeled cargo. t r a i l e r or towed equipment and, with reduced

- perfomance, Field Artillery weapons of the 25 pr and battalion A t k types. The primary duty of the F.F.W. vehicle is in connection with wireless telegraphy. The basic vehicle i s readily converted t o other roles when f i t t e d with additional e q u i p - ment .

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF VEHICLE

2. The chassis frame is of crucif orm design and is formed with two box-section side- - members ri&dly cross-braced and strengthened by welding t o the floor, front wheel valances, dash panel and battery compartment S, the complete structure being fabricated from skeet steel pressings. A support fo r a machine gun mounting pintle i s welded into the scutt le i n front of the front passenger's seat.

3. The open type body, which i s bolted t o the chassis f rame and floor assembly, i s 4- of pressed s tee l construction and includes the rear wheel arches.

4, The windscreen can-be folded f l a t on to the bonnet or removed completely, when - necessary.

5. Two folding seats are provided for the driver and the front passenger, while a - folding bench type seat and a folding three-piece back-rest are prwided fo r the two rear passengers. Each front seat, when tipped forward, gives access t o a compartment

7

underneath. The rear seat can be swung over t o form a platform for load-carrying, while each section of the back-rest can be used i n a s imi la r manner t o support li@t equipment.

- 6. Provision i s made for carrying the spare wheel on top of the one-piece bonnet as an alternative t o the normal position a t the rear of the vehicle t o meet the require- mefits of some special role vehicles.

7-

7. A f u l l width front bumper and two small rear bumpers are f i t ted.

7 8. Weather protection i s prwided by a waterproof hood. Early cargo vehicles are also provided with side screens.

- 9. The fuel tarik i s located a t the rear of the vehicle.

- 10. Power is sqp l i ed by a &-cylinder, water-cooled B40 engine which i s of u n i t construction with the clutch and gearbox.

- 11. 'A gi l led tube radiator i s provided together with a 10-bladed fan for cooling gurposes. The cooling system i s pressurized t o 10 l b per sq in.

-- 12. The power is transmitted through a 10 in. Borg and Beck, single dry plate clutch to a 5-speed a l l synchromesh gearbox devoid of reverse gear.

13. The drive from the gearbox i s transmitted by means of an open Hardy-Spicer - propeller shaf't to a transfer box, integral with the rear axle. The transfer box incorporates the reverse gear and also makes provision fo r a power take-off when it is

14, The drive from the transfer box t o the rear wheel hubs i s taken through hypoid 7

bevel gears, a normal bevel type differential and fully-floating half-shafts, each articulated by two t racta type constant velocity universal joints which are to ta l ly enclosed i n spherical housings. The axle is resi l iently mounted i n a cradle. 7

15. The front axle i s similar t o the rear axle except for the provision for steering and that a sliding dog clutch replaces the transfer box. The drive from the rear t o 7

the front d e is taken through an open Hardy- Spicer propeller shaft.

7 16. The suspension is of the fu l ly independent type employing an upper and a lower pair of transverse wishbone arms i n conjunction with a longitudinal torsion bar a t each wheel station.

-7 .

l 7. A telescopic double-acting shock absorber and a large conical rubber .buff er, which gives an increasing ra te of compression under bump conditions, are provided at each Wheel stat ion for the purposes of' damping and act as secondary suspension. The shock absorber also controls the rebound i n conjunction with a small rubber buffer attached to the cradle.

18. Girling hydraulic brakes are f i t ted. The front brakes are of the two leading shoe type with t w o shoe expanders (wheel cylinders) while the rear brakes are of the leading and t ra i l ing shoe type with a single floating shoe expander. The footbrake operates on all four wheels and the handbrake operates mechanically on the rear wheels mly.

19. Divided-disc road wheels with cross-country tyres are f i t ted.

20. Steering is controlled through a helical rack and pinion type steering box.

21. The electr ical system is 24-volt, two 12-volt vehicle batteries being housed under the front passenger's seat. In F.F.W. vehicles, two additional 12-volt batteries for radio duties are housed under the driver's seat, and i n order t o cater fo r the extra load, a special 2-speed generator i s f i t ted . The batteries i n F.F.W. vehicles are of a different type t o those i n cargo vehicles.
