• The pattern of non-attendance starts early

• Intervention in elementary years is the most effective

• Whole school approaches are the best

• A welcoming, supportive school environment is key

Attendance Projects

• Started in September 2011 – two year grant to 15 school divisions

• Focus of grant: evidence based practices that improve student attendance

• Projects vary from single school initiatives, to clusters of schools within a division

• Elementary, middle years or high school

What we have learned so far…

• Manitoba has very good average attendance

• Attendance concerns are complex

• Students with attendance from 80% and up tend to “fly under the radar”

• Interventions need to be targeted to specific groups of students
